Book Global Faith Worldly Power

Download or read book Global Faith Worldly Power written by John Corrigan and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing the grand American evangelical missionary venture to convert the world, this international group of leading scholars reveals how theological imperatives have intersected with worldly imaginaries from the nineteenth century to the present. Countering the stubborn notion that conservative Protestant groups have steadfastly maintained their distance from governmental and economic affairs, these experts show how believers' ambitious investments in missionizing and humanitarianism have connected with worldly matters of empire, the Cold War, foreign policy, and neoliberalism. They show, too, how evangelicals' international activism redefined the content and the boundaries of the movement itself. As evangelical voices from Africa, Asia, and Latin America became more vocal and assertive, U.S. evangelicals took on more pluralistic, multidirectional identities not only abroad but also back home. Applying this international perspective to the history of American evangelicalism radically changes how we understand the development and influence of evangelicalism, and of globalizing religion more broadly. In addition to a critical introduction and essays by editors John Corrigan, Melani McAlister, and Axel R. Schafer are essays by Lydia Boyd, Emily Conroy-Krutz, Christina Cecelia Davidson, Helen Jin Kim, David C. Kirkpatrick, Candace Lukasik, Sarah Miller-Davenport, Dana L. Robert, Tom Smith, Lauren F. Turek, and Gene Zubovich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The dramatic growth of Christianity around the world in the last century has shifted the balance of power within the faith away from the traditional strongholds of Europe and the United States to the Global South. While we typically imagine Western missionaries carrying religion to the ends of the earth, David R. Swartz shows that the line of influence has often run the other way, as evangelicals in nations such as Korea, India, and Uganda shaped the American church from abroad. Swartz tells stories of evangelicals crossing national boundaries, offering new insights into a tradition that imagines itself as simultaneously American and part of a global communion"--

Book excerpt: Poetry to me is the sacred language of the heart and soul. It is the raw, uncensored, deep thoughts, experiences, senses, that come from my inner core. It is the magical part of the mundane. It is the description of the things not everyone sees and talks about. It is the connection to God, the universe, the moon and stars and everything in between. It is the flowers of the spoken world collected into a colourful bouquet. It is the flow of consciousness sometimes emerging from the unconscious, revealing the unknown. It is the life force pouring out and transforming into words that are an invitation to connect us in a meaningful, sacred and supportive way. A Piece of her heart is a collection of poetry written by Teri Petz. You will be pleased because the poems embody the finest and most beautiful shades of expressions the human soul could share. Teri’s poetry explores the intricate connections between humans and nature. The reader will find themselves being drawn into the heartfelt feelings, emotions and new connections to the universe. The poetry reflects a world-view of wonder, appreciation, and love. To share in her vision is to have hope again while also seeing clearly, hearing fully. Teri's poems reflect the struggles and triumphs of everyday life and are spiced with some humour a few times. Her goal is not only to entertain you but also to leave little seeds of inspiration and validation to whatever your journey may be. Whatever road you are on, whatever you may be experiencing she wants you to know that many of us have been there before, even if it feels like you are all alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century is marked by mass migration. Massive population movements of the last century have radically challenged our study and practice of mission. Where the church once rallied to go out into “the regions beyond,” Christian mission is currently required to respond and adapt to “missions around.” As a result, leaders in this field have been developing diaspora missiology to provide a missiological framework for understanding and participating in God’s redemptive mission among peoples living outside their places of origin. In this volume, experts in diaspora missiology from across the globe analyze the development of missions to migrants and add to our understanding of the contemporary church’s opportunities and responsibilities for mission amongst diaspora groups.

Book God s Heart for Children

Download or read book God s Heart for Children written by Rosalind Tan and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the New Testament, Jesus is explicit in communicating God’s heart for children. Yet what does it look like for that heart to encounter the contextual realities of life in the twenty-first century? This book explores the theological implications and practical realities of ministry with children in a globalized world. Affirming eight core beliefs regarding the place of children in creation – that they are created with dignity and intended to be placed in families, cared for in community, advocated by society, secured in hope, affirmed in God’s church, included in God’s mission, and engaged in creation care – this book traces the impact of such far-reaching issues as displacement, climate change, human trafficking, persecution, and gender discrimination on childhood development. Written by over twenty contributors from around the world, each section roots its premise in contextual theology, examines the implications for praxis, provides a case study, and includes questions for discussion and reflection. Through each chapter the conversation around childhood development is broadened, prioritizing the experiences of children and practitioners to truly reflect the realities of our changing world. This is an excellent resource for all those concerned with the current risks facing children, especially among the world’s most vulnerable populations, and what best practice looks like as the people of God work to bring God’s heart, and hope, to children in their communities and beyond.

Book America Is Not the Heart

Download or read book America Is Not the Heart written by Elaine Castillo and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the best books of 2018 by NPR, Real Simple, Lit Hub, The Boston Globe, San Francisco Chronicle, The New York Post, Kirkus Reviews, and The New York Public Library "A saga rich with origin myths, national and personal . . . Castillo is part of a younger generation of American writers instilling literature with a layered sense of identity." --Vogue How many lives fit in a lifetime? When Hero De Vera arrives in America--haunted by the political upheaval in the Philippines and disowned by her parents--she's already on her third. Her uncle gives her a fresh start in the Bay Area, and he doesn't ask about her past. His younger wife knows enough about the might and secrecy of the De Vera family to keep her head down. But their daughter--the first American-born daughter in the family--can't resist asking Hero about her damaged hands. An increasingly relevant story told with startling lucidity, humor, and an uncanny ear for the intimacies and shorthand of family ritual, America Is Not the Heart is a sprawling, soulful debut about three generations of women in one family struggling to balance the promise of the American dream and the unshakeable grip of history. With exuberance, grit, and sly tenderness, here is a family saga; an origin story; a romance; a narrative of two nations and the people who leave one home to grasp at another.

Book American Jesuits and the World

Download or read book American Jesuits and the World written by John T. McGreevy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How American Jesuits helped forge modern Catholicism around the world At the start of the nineteenth century, the Jesuits seemed fated for oblivion. Dissolved as a religious order in 1773 by one pope, they were restored in 1814 by another, but with only six hundred aged members. Yet a century later, the Jesuits numbered seventeen thousand men and were at the vanguard of the Catholic Church’s expansion around the world. This book traces this nineteenth-century resurgence, showing how Jesuits nurtured a Catholic modernity through a disciplined counterculture of parishes, schools, and associations. Drawing on archival materials from three continents, American Jesuits and the World tracks Jesuits who left Europe for America and Jesuits who left the United States for missionary ventures across the Pacific. Each chapter tells the story of a revealing or controversial event, including the tarring and feathering of an exiled Swiss Jesuit in Maine, the efforts of French Jesuits in Louisiana to obtain Vatican approval of a miraculous healing, and the educational efforts of American Jesuits in Manila. These stories reveal how the Jesuits not only revived their own order but made modern Catholicism more global. The result is a major contribution to modern global history and an invaluable examination of the meaning of religious liberty in a pluralistic age.
