Book excerpt: This remarkable collection investigates the relations between literature and the economy in the context of the unprecedented expansion of early modern England s long distance trade. Studying a range of genres and writers, both familiar and lesser known, the essays offer a new history of globalization as a complex of unevenly developing cultural, discursive, and economic phenomena. While focusing on how long distance trade contributed to England s economic growth and cultural transformation, the collection taps into scholarly interest in race, gender, travel and exploration, domesticity, mapping, the state and emergent nationalism, and proto-colonialism in the early modern period.

Download or read book Screen Traffic written by Charles R. Acland and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Screen Traffic, Charles R. Acland examines how, since the mid-1980s, the U.S. commercial movie business has altered conceptions of moviegoing both within the industry and among audiences. He shows how studios, in their increasing reliance on revenues from international audiences and from the ancillary markets of television, videotape, DVD, and pay-per-view, have cultivated an understanding of their commodities as mutating global products. Consequently, the cultural practice of moviegoing has changed significantly, as has the place of the cinema in relation to other sites of leisure. Integrating film and cultural theory with close analysis of promotional materials, entertainment news, trade publications, and economic reports, Acland presents an array of evidence for the new understanding of movies and moviegoing that has developed within popular culture and the entertainment industry. In particular, he dissects a key development: the rise of the megaplex, characterized by large auditoriums, plentiful screens, and consumer activities other than film viewing. He traces its genesis from the re-entry of studios into the movie exhibition business in 1986 through 1998, when reports of the economic destabilization of exhibition began to surface, just as the rise of so-called e-cinema signaled another wave of change. Documenting the current tendency toward an accelerated cinema culture, one that appears to arrive simultaneously for everyone, everywhere, Screen Traffic unearths and critiques the corporate and cultural forces contributing to the “felt internationalism” of our global era.

Download or read book Animal Traffic written by Rosemary-Claire Collard and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parrots and snakes, wild cats and monkeys---exotic pets can now be found everywhere from skyscraper apartments and fenced suburban backyards to roadside petting zoos. In Animal Traffic Rosemary-Claire Collard investigates the multibillion-dollar global exotic pet trade and the largely hidden processes through which exotic pets are produced and traded as lively capital. Tracking the capture of animals in biosphere reserves in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize; their exchange at exotic animal auctions in the United States; and the attempted rehabilitation of former exotic pets at a wildlife center in Guatemala, Collard shows how exotic pets are fetishized both as commodities and as objects. Their capture and sale sever their ties to complex socio-ecological networks in ways that make them appear as if they do not have lives of their own. Collard demonstrates that the enclosure of animals in the exotic pet trade is part of a bioeconomic trend in which life is increasingly commodified and objectified under capitalism. Ultimately, she calls for a “wild life” politics in which animals are no longer enclosed, retain their autonomy, and can live for the sake of themselves.

Book Redefining Global Strategy with a New Preface

Download or read book Redefining Global Strategy with a New Preface written by Pankaj Ghemawat and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Tools for Succeeding Globally Why do so many global strategies fail--despite companies' powerful brands and other border-crossing advantages? Because a one-size-fits-all strategy no longer stands a chance. When firms believe in the illusions of a "flat" world and the death of distance, they charge across borders as if the globe were one seamless marketplace. But cross-border differences are larger than we assume. Most economic activity--including trade, real and financial investment, tourism, and communication--happens locally, not internationally. In this "semiglobalized" approach, companies can cross borders more profitably by basing their strategies on the geopolitical differences that matter; they must identify the barriers their strategies will have to overcome, and they must build bridges to cross those barriers. Based on rigorous research, Pankaj Ghemawat shows how to create successful strategies and provides practical management tools so you can: Assess the cultural, administrative, geographic, and economic differences between regions at the industry level--and decide which ones require attention Track the implications of the specific border-crossing actions that will impact your company's ability to create value the most Generate superior performance through strategies that are optimized for the three A's: adaptation (adjusting to differences), aggregation (overcoming differences), and arbitrage (exploiting differences) Using in-depth examples, Ghemawat reveals how companies such as Cemex, Toyota, Procter & Gamble, Tata Consultancy Services, IBM, and GE Healthcare are adroitly managing cross-border differences. He also shares examples of other well-known companies that have failed at this challenge. Crucial for any business competing across borders, Redefining Global Strategy will help you make the most of our semiglobalized world.
