Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tattooing is a way of life! Yes, this phrase may sound cliché, but that's not true. For millennia, human beings have used their skin to shape messages permanently: The troglodytes with their war marks, members of the tribes representing their status within the group, and elders asking the gods for protection. In modern times, these reasons have been left aside to mean something purer: individual expression. People who wear tattoos in these times do so with the firm intention of visually showing what they carry inside or as the canvas of incredible artistic pieces. That's why tattoos can't be considered a fashion anymore but a way of life. Global Tattoo Magazine was born precisely from this concept to show the world the culture behind tattoos and what tattooed people worldwide want to represent. In Global Tattoo Magazine, you can find all the information you need about the most modern tattoo techniques, new styles, and current trends so you can capture what you carry inside your skin. Likewise, we will provide you with everything you need to know about the most acclaimed tattoo artists in the world, where you will be able to see part of their portfolio and find out what makes them so unique. Global Tattoo Magazine is designed to be the primary reference for all those who want to get tattooed for the first time (or even for the fifteenth time), as there is a vacuum of information created and designed for the tribe of tattooed. This void can be noticed when many people, before getting a tattoo, look for information about techniques, style, care tips, and others. Still, almost all the information you get is focused on the tattoo artists; after all, the clients will carry these pieces of art permanently engraved on their skin. A person with tattoos will always attract attention and steal glances, and we want to be part of that process, of guiding each tattooed in every step of getting the most incredible tattoo on their skin; after all, each one is much more than a simple canvas for the artist, he is a person who wants to show his individuality to the world. With the advice of Global Tattoo Magazine, these individuals can make the best realistic decisions about their next tattoos, to take an emblematic piece that truly represents them. Without a doubt, Global Tattoo Magazine seeks to be a source of accurate, current, and objective information about the world of tattooing, to be able to offer the advice and advice that readers need, and even to be able to give them inspiration and motivation they need before getting their next tattoo. And we at Tattooed! We will do our best so that you, who want to shout to the world who you are with a piece that represents you, can take the step of tattooing your skin in the right way, giving you those tips you need so much, and answering those questions you may not dare to do. Don't be afraid to stain your skin; after all, the only thing that matters is that you have the freedom to express your personality as you see fit, and from now on, we will be with you every step of the way

Book Inked Tattoos and Body Art around the World 2 volumes

Download or read book Inked Tattoos and Body Art around the World 2 volumes written by Margo DeMello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 1005 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, tattoos have gone from being a subculture curiosity in Western culture to mainstream and commonplace. This two-volume set provides broad coverage of tattooing and body art in the United States today as well as around the world and throughout human history. In the 1960s, tattooing was illegal in many parts of the United States. Today, tattooing is fully ingrained in mainstream culture and is estimated to be a multi-billion-dollar industry. This exhaustive work contains approximately 400 entries on tattooing, providing historical information that enables readers to fully understand the methods employed, the meanings of, and the motivations behind tattooing—one of the most ancient ways humans mark themselves. The encyclopedia covers all important aspects of the topic of tattooing: the major types of tattooing, the cultural groups associated with tattooing, the regions of the world where tattooing has been performed, the origins of modern tattooing in prehistory, and the meaning of each society's use of tattoos. Major historical and contemporary figures associated with tattooing—including tattooists, tattooed people, and tattoo promoters—receive due attention for their contributions. The entries and sidebars also address the sociological movements involved with tattooing; the organizations; the media dedicated to tattooing, such as television shows, movies, magazines, websites, and books; and the popular conventions, carnivals, and fairs that have showcased tattooing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1891 J. Murakami travelled from Japan, via San Francisco, to Vancouver Island and began working in and around Victoria. His occupation: creating permanent images on the skin of paying clients. From this early example of tattooing as work, Jamie Jelinski takes us from coast to coast with detours to the United States, England, and Japan as he traces the evolution of commercial tattooing in Canada over more than one hundred years. Needle Work offers insight into how tattoo artists navigated regulation, the types of spaces they worked in, and the dynamic relationship between the images they tattooed on customers and other forms of visual culture and artistic enterprise. Merging biographical narratives with an examination of tattooing’s place within wider society, Jelinski reveals how these commercial image makers bridged conventional gaps between cultural production and practical, for-profit work, thereby establishing tattooing as a legitimate career. Richly illustrated and drawing on archives, print media, and objects held in institutions and private collections across Canada and beyond, Needle Work provides a timely understanding of a vocation that is now familiar but whose intricate history has rarely been considered.

Book excerpt: Tattoo Histories is an edited volume which analyses and discusses the relevance of tattooing in the socio-cultural construction of bodies, boundaries, and identities, among both individuals and groups. Its interdisciplinary approach facilitates historical as well as contemporary perspectives. Rather than presenting a universal, essentialized history of tattooing, the volume’s objective is to focus on the entangled and transcultural histories, narratives, and practices related to tattoos. Contributions stem from various fields, including Archaeology, Art History, Classics, History, Linguistics, Media and Literary Studies, Social and Cultural Anthropology, and Sociology. They advance the current endeavour on the part of tattoo scholars to challenge Eurocentric and North American biases prevalent in much of tattoo research, by including various analyses based in locations such as Malaysia, Israel, East Africa, and India. The thematic focus is on the transformative capacity of tattoos and tattooing, with regard to the social construction of bodies and subjectivity; the (re-)creation of social relationships through the definition of (non-)tattooed others; the formation and consolidation of group identities, traditions, and authenticity; and the conceptualization of art and its relevance to tattoo artist–tattooee relations.

Book Transnational Punk Communities in Poland

Download or read book Transnational Punk Communities in Poland written by Marta Marciniak and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Transnational History of Punk Communities in Poland is a multi-regional study of the history and contemporary condition of two Polish punk communities: the one in Warsaw and surrounding areas, and the Upper Silesian region: both rich in varied and sometimes conflicting punk traditions. The author, a self-identified member of the punk subculture formerly living and active in Warsaw, explores the various political, economic and social dimensions of the development of these unique communities and the meaning of the punk ethos for people across different age groups, genders, and life experiences, in relation to other subcultures, especially skinheads, and the broader society. An additional dimension, previously unexplored in scholarship, are the ties between these Polish punk communities and their counterparts in the United States and Canada. The personal connections between early bands and the long lasting transnational aspects of punk practices are shown to be an important factor in the shaping of punk attitudes across time and space. The economics of everyday punk life are discussed referring to contemporary scholarship on the subject, punk lyrics, and ethnographies which throughout the book illustrate selected themes and problems. This study includes insight about obscure yet foundational Silesian bands and their defiant, sardonic humor; about punk and anarchy, punk versus communism and the political opposition in the 1980s, punks’ attitudes toward the transformation of 1989, about being a punk girl on the streets of Warsaw or Wodzisław Śląski. Discover punk as an old subculture that cherishes its own past and remains an important alternative to mainstream cultural practices in a rapidly “Westernizing” and corporatizing country.
