There are chapters on pain management, organ failure, infections and transfusions, as well as nutrition and neurocognitive complications. The book concludes with chapters on anti-sickness medication, cell transplantation and nursing care. The first in a two-volume set offering a multi-disciplinary perspective on SCD, this is a comprehensive resource that applies clinical knowledge to the practical challenges faced in sub-Saharan Africa. It will be important reading for medical students taking courses in haematology as well as those studying Public Health in sub-Saharan Africa. Practitioners in the region will also find it invaluable in developing their understanding of this pervasive disease.

Book Global Status Report on Road Safety

Download or read book Global Status Report on Road Safety written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, and between 20 and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey. The results show that road traffic injuries remain an important public health problem, particularly for low-income and middle-income countries. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up almost half of those killed on the roads, highlighting the need for these road users to be given more attention in road safety programmes. The results suggest that in many countries road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive while enforcement should be strengthened. The Global status report on road safety results clearly show that significantly more action is needed to make the world's roads safer. [Ed.]

Book Cases on Applying Knowledge Economy Principles for Economic Growth in Developing Nations

Download or read book Cases on Applying Knowledge Economy Principles for Economic Growth in Developing Nations written by Piaggesi, Danilo and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-21 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge economy is the added non-monetary value that society accrues from increased access to data, information, and knowledge in the new, globally connected world. ICT and technology innovation are paving the way for significant economic development opportunities for countries that have embarked in a concerted effort to model their economies according to the knowledge economy principles. Among developing countries, knowledge economy principles are being applied mostly in a sector-wise level, where government intervention with enabling policies coupled with joint efforts by the private sector, academia, and other actors are resulting in durable and sustainable benefits. Cases on Applying Knowledge Economy Principles for Economic Growth in Developing Nations examines cases from developing countries in order to derive an adapted model of knowledge economy that could be applied to developing country conditions. This book contributes to the change of paradigm on how to help developing countries in advancing to better conditions by using ICT-related technology. Covering topics such as learning organizations, green technology, and sustainable organizations, this is a dynamic resource for emerging economies, researchers, students, professors, academicians, and multilateral organizations helping developing countries.

Book Framework for monitoring sexually transmitted infections and strengthening surveillance

Download or read book Framework for monitoring sexually transmitted infections and strengthening surveillance written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-07-18 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication has been developed to provide a national framework for monitoring the health sector’s response to sexually transmitted infections and a set of core indicators to: -support countries monitor their programming for sexually transmitted infections and to identify gaps and challenges; and -facilitate regional and global tracking of the progress of WHO Member States in strengthening STI programming towards achieving the targets outlined in the global health sector strategies on, respectively, HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections. The core indicators are structured around currently available STI interventions and data that are routinely collected or can be monitored at least annually. The indicators are aligned with global reporting requirements and to the targets detailed in the global health sector strategies. Collecting and analysing these data will provide a comprehensive picture of the health burden of STIs and will inform how best to allocate resources to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and equity of STI services. The publication also outlines a stepwise approach to strengthen the monitoring of STI programmes and STI surveillance.

Book Transfusion Practice in Clinical Neurosciences

Download or read book Transfusion Practice in Clinical Neurosciences written by Hemanshu Prabhakar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid management is the basis of all clinical management in neurosurgical patients. This is a complete book on transfusion practice in clinical neurosciences. It covers in detail the fluids and blood transfusion practice, also discussing the role of total parenteral nutrition in relation to neurologic patients. The importance of fluid management clinically can be seen as on one hand it plays a significant role in maintaining the hydration of the patient and on the other provides sufficient relaxation to the brain to facilitate surgery. The use of hyperosmolar therapy is unique to the practice of clinical neurosciences. Certain fluid types such as those containing glucose are detrimental to the brain. Likewise, large fluid shifts and blood loss are often observed during neurosurgical procedures. It is relevant to understand the physiology of blood and blood transfusion. This book covers all of these topics in their true relevance. It also provides an evidence-based practice of fluid administration for all neurologic patients including, pediatric and geriatric. The proposed book will be useful for trainees and clinicians in any field of clinical neurosciences. It would be very useful for residents and fellows pursuing their courses in neuroanesthesia, neurocritical care, neurosurgery, emergency medicine, anesthesia, and critical care. Fellows, Resident doctors, postgraduates, and even undergraduates would be benefited from this book. The book would be a ready-reckoner and useful during the clinical practice of physicians from varied specialties.

Book Global Status Report on Noncommunicable Diseases 2014

Download or read book Global Status Report on Noncommunicable Diseases 2014 written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This global status report on prevention and control of NCDs (2014), is framed around the nine voluntary global targets. The report provides data on the current situation, identifying bottlenecks as well as opportunities and priority actions for attaining the targets. The 2010 baseline estimates on NCD mortality and risk factors are provided so that countries can report on progress, starting in 2015. In addition, the report also provides the latest available estimates on NCD mortality (2012) and risk factors, 2010-2012. All ministries of health need to set national NCD targets and lead the development and implementation of policies and interventions to attain them. There is no single pathway to attain NCD targets that fits all countries, as they are at different points in their progress in the prevention and control of NCDs and at different levels of socioeconomic development. However all countries can benefit from the comprehensive response to attaining the voluntary global targets presented in this report.--Publisher description.
