Download or read book Global Ecosystems Database Version 1 0 on CD ROM written by John J. Kineman and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Environmental Research Laboratory - Corvallis, Oregon (ERL-C), established an Interagency Agreement with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) in September 1990. This agreement began a five year cooperative effort to develop a geographic database for modeling terrestrial climatebiosphere interactions in support of EPA's Global Climate Research Program. Although performing specific tasks under contract to the US EPA, NGDC independently operates a Global Change Database Program (GCDP) as part of its NOAA mission Considerable synergism therefore exists between the tasks performed for the JPA under the "Global Ecosystems Database Project, '' and other activities supporting NOAA Climate and Global Change Program"--Preface

Book Climate Change and Biodiversity

Download or read book Climate Change and Biodiversity written by Mehtab Singh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The over-exploitation of important earth resources such as land and water has led to a number of environment-related problems the world over. At the same time, land-use change caused by various human activities has led to extinction of many plant and animal habitats and species. In this context, the relevance of biodiversity for human survival is becoming a major international political issue as scientific evidence builds on the global health implications of biodiversity loss. These issues are closely linked with the issue of climate change, as many of the health risks due to climate change are associated with rapid degradation of biodiversity. This present work focuses on holistic natural resource-based spatio-temporal planning, development, and management and considers them as essential to save the degraded ecosystem for sustainable resource management. Contributions are compiled in two volumes: 1. Climate Change and Biodiversity and 2. Landscape Ecology and Water Management. Geoinformatics along with its tools such as remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) have been used in assessing the results of various environmental problems both physical and social. The volume will be useful for geographers, geoscientists, hydrologists, landscape ecologists, environmentalists, engineers, planners and policy makers.

Book World Resources 2000 2001

Download or read book World Resources 2000 2001 written by C. Rosen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-11-29 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Resources 2000-2001, People and Ecosystems: The Fraying Web of Life focuses on the critical link between ecosystems and people and provides an overview of current global environmental and economic trends using hundreds of indicators in more than 150 countries. Until now there has not been a comprehensive, formalised process to assess human damage to our ecosystems, to establish a baseline for future actions, or to disseminate information that would aid the formulation of better policies world-wide. This book is the first reliable, comprehensive base of evidence for taking stock and taking care of the world's diverse ecosystems. • deals with the critical issues that focus on the link between ecosystems and people • highlights the goods and services that ecosystems provide and illustrates the benefits of a better understanding and better management of the planet's natural wealth • reports on pilot studies by leading scientists and international institutions assessing the state of the world's ecosystems - forests, croplands, grasslands, freshwater systems and coastal areas • increases the understanding of human dependence on nature • raises awareness of environmental threats • provides examples of wise stewardship from all corners of the globe • focuses on four main issues: population and human well-being, food and water security, consumption, energy and wastes, trace emissions since the Kyoto protocol • gives data tables for more than 150 countries It demonstrates the power of information and new digital technologies to transform the way we interact with our environment and is particularly important for environmentalists, scientists, professionals, journalists, policy-makers and students. This special Millennium Edition of the World Resources Institute's biennial report published by Elsevier Science in September 2000 in partnership with the World Resources Institute, the UN Environment Program, the UN Development Programme and the World Bank. Book GIS and Environmental Modeling

Download or read book GIS and Environmental Modeling written by Michael F. Goodchild and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1996-09-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GIS and Environmental Modeling: Progress and Research Issues Michael F. Goodchild, Louis T. Steyaert, Bradley O. Parks, Carol Johnston, David Maidment, Michael Crane, and Sandi Glendinning, Editors With growing pressure on natural resources and landscapes there is an increasing need to predict the consequences of any changes to the environment. Modelling plays an important role in this by helping our understanding of the environment and by forecasting likely impacts. In recent years moves have been made to link models to Geographical Information Systems to provide a means of analysing changes over an area as well as over time. GIS and Environmental Modeling explores the progress made to date in integrating these two software systems. Approaches to the subject are made from theoretical, technical as well as data stand points. The existing capabilities of current systems are described along with important issues of data availability, accuracy and error. Various case studies illustrate this and highlight the common concepts and issues that exist between researchers in different environmental fields. The future needs and prospects for integrating GIS and environmental models are also explored with developments in both data handling and modelling discussed. The book brings together the knowledge and experience of over 100 researchers from academic, commercial and government backgrounds who work in a wide range of disciplines. The themes followed in the text provide a fund of knowledge and guidance for those involved in environmental modelling and GIS. The book is easily accessible for readers with a basic GIS knowledge and the ideas and results of the research are clearly illustrated with both colour and black and white graphics.
