Book Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System

Download or read book Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In May 2015, the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly adopted the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance, which reflects the global consensus that AMR poses a profound threat to human health. One of the five strategic objectives of the Global action plan is to strengthen the evidence base through enhanced global surveillance and research. The Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) has been developed to facilitate and encourage a standardized approach to AMR surveillance globally and in turn support the implementation of the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance. This manual addresses the early phase of implementation of GLASS, focussing on surveillance of resistance in common human bacterial pathogens. The intended readership of this publication is public health professionals and health authorities responsible for national AMR surveillance. It outlines the GLASS standards and describes the road map for implementation of the system between 2015 and 2019. Further development of GLASS will be based on the lessons learnt during this period"--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The WHO Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (EGASP) was developed to address many of GASP’s limitations and strengthen sentinel surveillance for gonococcal AMR in selected countries. EGASP is a unique project implemented under the EGASP protocol published in 2021 for participating countries to adapt to their context. It is aligned with the WHO Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS). Book GLASS guide for national surveillance systems for monitoring antimicrobial consumption in hospitals

Download or read book GLASS guide for national surveillance systems for monitoring antimicrobial consumption in hospitals written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global public health is under threat from increasing levels of antimicrobial resistance. Although resistance is a natural process, it is increasing because of the use of antimicrobial medicines. Monitoring consumption of antimicrobials provides the data needed to develop effective strategies to mitigate resistance and improve patient health. This is particularly important in hospitals, which have highly vulnerable patients in narrow spaces, often being prescribed high levels of antimicrobials. Monitoring antimicrobial consumption within healthcare facilities is an integral part of the stewardship programmes To assist countries to establish surveillance systems in hospitals, this document lists the steps and methods for collecting, collating, analyzing and reporting antimicrobial consumption data. The data generated can help countries and hospitals to better understand how antimicrobials are being used in national, regional and local hospitals. The document is aimed at policy-makers, hospital managers, health care professionals and researchers.

Book Protocol for Enhanced Isolate Level Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance in the Americas

Download or read book Protocol for Enhanced Isolate Level Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance in the Americas written by Pan American Pan American Health Organization and published by Pan American Health Organization. This book was released on 2021-02-11 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance plays an important role in the early detection of resistant strains of public health importance and prompt response to outbreaks in hospitals and the community. Surveillance findings are needed to inform medical practice, antibiotic stewardship, and policy and interventions to combat AMR. Appropriate use of antimicrobials, informed by surveillance, improves patients' treatment outcomes and reduces the emergence and spread of AMR. This protocol describes the steps and procedures to establish/enhance AMR surveillance in Latin America and the Caribbean. It provides technical guidance to integrate patient, laboratory, and epidemiological data to monitor AMR emergence, trends, and effects in the population. It also provides the necessary elements to move from aggregated data to isolate-level data surveillance starting with blood isolates. It facilitates uniform data collection processes, methods, and tools to ensure data comparability within the Region of the Americas. Finally, it builds on over a decade of experience of the regional AMR surveillance network--ReLAVRA by its Spanish acronym--and its procedures are aligned with the Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS) methodology, enabling countries to participate in the global GLASS AMR surveillance.

Book Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Protecting the Miracle of Modern Medicine

Download or read book Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Protecting the Miracle of Modern Medicine written by National Academies Of Sciences Engineeri and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2022-07-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Strategy for Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria, published in 2014, sets out a plan for government work to mitigate the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria. Direction on the implementation of this strategy is provided in five-year national action plans, the first covering 2015 to 2020, and the second covering 2020 to 2025. Combating Antimicrobial Resistance and Protecting the Miracle of Modern Medicine evaluates progress made against the national strategy. This report discusses ways to improve detection of resistant infections and estimate the risk to human health from environmental sources of resistance. In addition, the report considers the effect of agricultural practices on human and animal health and animal welfare and ways these practices could be improved, and advises on key drugs and diseases for which animal-specific test breakpoints are needed.

Book Antimicrobial Resistance in Developing Countries

Download or read book Antimicrobial Resistance in Developing Countries written by Aníbal de J. Sosa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avoiding infection has always been expensive. Some human populations escaped tropical infections by migrating into cold climates but then had to procure fuel, warm clothing, durable housing, and crops from a short growing season. Waterborne infections were averted by owning your own well or supporting a community reservoir. Everyone got vaccines in rich countries, while people in others got them later if at all. Antimicrobial agents seemed at first to be an exception. They did not need to be delivered through a cold chain and to everyone, as vaccines did. They had to be given only to infected patients and often then as relatively cheap injectables or pills off a shelf for only a few days to get astonishing cures. Antimicrobials not only were better than most other innovations but also reached more of the world’s people sooner. The problem appeared later. After each new antimicrobial became widely used, genes expressing resistance to it began to emerge and spread through bacterial populations. Patients infected with bacteria expressing such resistance genes then failed treatment and remained infected or died. Growing resistance to antimicrobial agents began to take away more and more of the cures that the agents had brought.
