Download or read book Delw y Byd A Medieval Welsh Encyclopedia written by Natalia I. Petrovskaia and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition presents extracts from the medieval Welsh encyclopedia Delw y Byd. A medieval Welsh translation of the first book of the Latin encyclopedia known as Imago Mundi, written by Honorius Augustodunensis in the first quarter of the twelfth century, this text is a fine example of the ties between the intellectual world of Europe and Wales in the late-twelfth/early-thirteenth centuries, when the text was translated, ties that brought across the scientific knowledge based on Roman and late antique sources. Structured according to the four elements: earth, water, air and fire, the text presents geographical, anthropological, and astronomical information, often with historical and mythological contexts. The present edition follows that organizational principle, providing a glimpse into the medieval understanding of the overarching structure of the universe. The text is presented in its historical and literary context, with an updated account of its transmission. A commentary on the scientific context of the most interesting passages is provided, as well as a linguistic one. The edition also provides an overview of the variants by printing parallel texts based on all surviving medieval manuscript witnesses for a number of selected chapters. This includes sections of two previously unpublished medieval witnesses of the text. The accompanying glossary includes vocabulary from all extracts included in the edition.

Download or read book Walking the Wales Coast Path written by Paddy Dillon and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2022-04-15 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wales Coast Path offers an unparalleled opportunity to walk a nation's coastline in its entirety. Stretching 1400km (870 miles) from Chester to Chepstow, including Anglesey, the waymarked trail takes 2-3 months to complete but can easily be broken into shorter sections. The walking is generally not difficult, although there are occasional rugged sections, steep ascents and descents and more remote stretches with fewer facilities. Promising fantastic scenery and a unique insight into local history and culture, what better way to experience the diversity and beauty of Wales' captivating coastline? The route is presented in 57 stages, ranging from 16 to 32km, each featuring clear route description illustrated with 1:100,000 mapping, overview statistics and notes on the availability of accommodation, facilities and public transport links. You'll find plenty of helpful advice for planning your walk, plus background information on Welsh history, geology, plants, wildlife and local points of interest. A facilities table, Welsh glossary and useful contacts can be found in the appendices. Passing through the Snowdonia and Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks, as well as numerous AONBs and sections of Heritage Coast, the Wales Coast Path takes in seaside resorts, attractive fishing villages, sandy beaches, rocky coves and striking cliff coastline. Highlights include the picturesque Llyn and Gower peninsulas, 13th-century 'Iron Ring' castles and frequent opportunities for wildlife spotting. The route can be linked with Offa's Dyke Path National Trail (covered in a separate Cicerone guide) to complete a full circuit of Wales.
Download or read book The British Isles 1100 1500 written by Sir Rees Davies and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic writing in Britain and Ireland has tended to treat the histories of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as discrete subjects of study. This approach is understandable but it does lead to the creation of artificial boundaries within the historical study of the British Isles and, in particular, overlooks the often close links between the different countries and societies within these islands. Equally, it inhibits the opportunity to compare and contrast the countries and societies and explain where and why their paths have diverged or merged. This book is a pioneering attempt to show how the historical understanding of the period 1100–1500 may be enriched by adopting a 'British Isles' approach. Some of the chapters approach general issues such as political structures, aristocracies, law and literacy; others focus on more particular problems both between the countries and within them.
