This book was released on 2011-08-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most progressive movements for Freedom, Justice and Equality in African American history has been Islam. Transported into America among the very first slaves, it has survived for four centuries under the most difficult of circumstances. Yet, it has produced some of the most influential leaders among Black Americans including Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X, Imam Warithu Deen Mohammed, Louis Farrakhan and many others. In A Black Mans Journey in America: Glimpses of Islam, Conversations and Travels, I have placed my familys history within the context of that Islamic heritage. Further, I have attempted to unravel the method through which African American Muslims were so often forced to embrace as a means of survival.

Book Islam and the Americas

Download or read book Islam and the Americas written by Aisha Khan and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2017-01-10 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A tour de force that underwrites and shifts the petrified image of Islam disseminated by mainstream media."--Walter D. Mignolo, author of The Darker Side of Western Modernity "Gives us an entirely different picture of Muslims in the Americas than can be found in the established literature. A complex glimpse of the rich diversity and historical depth of Muslim presence in the Caribbean and Latin America."--Katherine Pratt Ewing, editor of Being and Belonging: Muslim Communities in the United States since 9/11 "Finally a broad-ranging comparative work exploring the roots of Islam in the Americas! Drawing upon fresh historical and ethnographic research, this book asks important questions about the politics of culture and globalization of religion in the modern world."--Keith E. McNeal, author of Trance and Modernity in the Southern Caribbean In case studies that include the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States, the contributors to this interdisciplinary volume trace the establishment of Islam in the Americas over the past three centuries. They simultaneously explore Muslims’ lived experiences and examine the ways Islam has been shaped in the "Muslim minority" societies in the New World, including the Gilded Age’s fascination with Orientalism, the gendered interpretations of doctrine among Muslim immigrants and local converts, the embrace of Islam by African American activist-intellectuals like Malcolm X, and the ways transnational hip hop artists re-create and reimagine Muslim identities. Together, these essays challenge the typical view of Islam as timeless, predictable, and opposed to Western worldviews and value systems, showing how this religious tradition continually engages with local and global issues of culture, gender, class, and race.

Download or read book iMuslims written by Gary R. Bunt and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the increasing impact of the Internet on Muslims around the world, this book sheds new light on the nature of contemporary Islamic discourse, identity, and community. The Internet has profoundly shaped how both Muslims and non-Muslims perceive Islam and how Islamic societies and networks are evolving and shifting in the twenty-first century, says Gary Bunt. While Islamic society has deep historical patterns of global exchange, the Internet has transformed how many Muslims practice the duties and rituals of Islam. A place of religious instruction may exist solely in the virtual world, for example, or a community may gather only online. Drawing on more than a decade of online research, Bunt shows how social-networking sites, blogs, and other "cyber-Islamic environments" have exposed Muslims to new influences outside the traditional spheres of Islamic knowledge and authority. Furthermore, the Internet has dramatically influenced forms of Islamic activism and radicalization, including jihad-oriented campaigns by networks such as al-Qaeda. By surveying the broad spectrum of approaches used to present dimensions of Islamic social, spiritual, and political life on the Internet, iMuslims encourages diverse understandings of online Islam and of Islam generally.

Book An Introduction to Hadith

Download or read book An Introduction to Hadith written by ʻAlī Nāṣirī and published by MIU Press. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the second main source of the true religion of Islam, hadith has a history full of ups and downs as far as the manner of its transmittal and the periods of its compilation and publication are concerned. Those who are acquainted with Islamic history have all acknowledged that from the time of transmittal up to now, hadith as been associated with many desirable as well as undesirable events, and its compilation and publication in some periods have had both faithful advocates and stern adversaries. For this reason, learning the “history of hadith” – though a piece of knowledge outside the different branches of the science of hadith – is essential for all those who want to benefit from the Sunnah and the corpus of hadith especially in view of the fact that the beginning of hadith compilation and its mechanism have not been the same for the proponents of the various Islamic schools of thought, each of them having a different opinion whose outcome may adversely affect the credibility and status of the existing traditions (ahadith). The present book, which has been written as a textbook in the tertiary level of Islamic studies, endeavors to present the general subjects relevant to hadith and its history as well as to acquaint the students of this field with the Sunni hadith collections and the Four Books (Kutub al-Arba‘ah) of the Shi‘ah in a simple and easy-to-understand approach.

Book Glimpses from the Life of the Blessed Prophet

Download or read book Glimpses from the Life of the Blessed Prophet written by Muhammad Husni Fayid and published by IHYA Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So much has been written about the Prophet of Islam, may God's blessings and peace be upon him and his family, that one may well wonder whether yet another book is called for. However, so much is known about him and there are so many ways of presenting and interpreting the material that any new work potentially has something additional to offer.Glimpses from the life of the Blessed Prophet being relatively short, it does not contain so much detail as to become arduous to read; nor is it so brief as to lose its informative power or the spiritual fragrance of that emanates from the life of the Supreme Divine Envoy. It provides essential information about the Prophet's background, ancestry, character, and household, the various stages of his life, his miracles, and his political and military activities. It is therefore a useful summary of the most important facts about him. It also shows how the Prophet envisaged his mission: what he wished to achieve for mankind and for his Community. Firstly, the Prophet's words and deeds, preserved in full detail for posterity by his Companions and transmitted meticulously from generation to generation, show how concerned he was to save disbelievers from the consequences of their denial of the One True God and of a Day of Judgement. He ordered his Community to transmit his message on his behalf as best they could, and to do so gently and tactfully. To exterminate them would result in their dying as disbelievers and deserving Hellfire, and so he fought only in self-defense. He enjoined upon his Community to keep their promises and pacts even with disbelievers. The second function was to make the believers better Muslims who excelled in their adoration of their Lord, and in their behavior toward others. The third function was to found an exemplary Islamic state, ruled with justice, where both Muslims and non-Muslims enjoyed the full protection of the Sacred Law and were able to worship in full freedom.
