Book 101 Glimpses of the South Fork

Download or read book 101 Glimpses of the South Fork written by Richard Panchyk and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Islands South Forkfamous for the Hamptonsis now one of the hottest summer destinations for the wealthiest and most famous Americans. But it wasnt always so. When European explorers arrived on Long Islands southeastern-most shores in the seventeenth century, they shared the land with the Montauket and Shinnecock Indians. The South Fork remained relatively rural until the railroad arrived in the 1870s. In this pictorial history, Richard Panchyk surveys how dramatically the landscape has changed, from the famous Montauk Lighthouse and iconic windmills to the sprawling mansions and opulent hotels, and highlights some of the notable figures who graced these shores, including New York politicians and a plethora of artists and celebrities. Showcasing the South Forks famous faces and places, Panchyk reveals this coastal communitys bygone era.

Book excerpt: The planet had been utterly transformed. Casualties from natural and man made calamities were of a biblical proportion. There were no longer any nations. There were no longer any laws of men. The world had become a wild place. Now, two generations later, the descendants of those that survived continue to carry on. Among them is Jedidiah. A man of steadfast faith, he enjoys a communion with his God that few come to know. One who prefers the solitude of the wilderness, he strives to live in peace with others. But when those that he loves are confronted with the horrors of human trafficking, he is forced to employ the skills of war that have been honed by the realities of an unforgiving world. His faith grows and his tactics shine as he endeavors to do what he knows to be right. Their reign of terror must be stopped. And Jedidiah would give his life to stop it.

Book Rockin the Rockpile

Download or read book Rockin the Rockpile written by Jeffrey J. Miller and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rockin' the Rockpile is a complete and comprehensive history of the Buffalo Bills AFL era -- from the first meetings of the "Foolish Club" to the eventual merger with the senior NFL -- and it brings to life the stories of a bygone time that fans regard as Buffalo's golden age of sport. Rockin' the Rockpile resonates with the words of the men who lived it. More than 60 former players, coaches, and administrative staff -- including Ralph Wilson -- shared their thoughts and memories for this book. As this book was intended as a collective memoir of the Buffalo Bills' AFL era, those interviews constitute the foundation upon which this book was written. It offers the average fan a glimpse into the locker room, film room, whirlpool, coach's office, press box, as well as the huddle, to see and hear just what the players and coaches were thinking or saying during a significant game or play. The Buffalo Bills of the 1960s represent a special time in the collective conscience of Buffalonians, a time when their team was twice champion of the renegade American Football League, and when Jack Kemp, Billy Shaw, Cookie Gilchrist, Mike Stratton, Tom Sestak, Elbert Dubenion, Ron McDole, and O.J. Simpson, captured the imagination of an entire community. They were the antithesis of the high-scoring, pass-happy AFL. When high-powered offenses were the main attraction, the Bills competed, and won, with a ball-control offense and a stingy defense. For three consecutive years, Buffalo's defensive unit was the best in the league, and was one of the best throughout the AFL's history. Western New Yorkers loved this team and its successful approach -- the Buffalo Bills mirrored the community they represented.

Book Frontiersmen and Settlers

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chronicle of the Bell family is one which will be familiar to thousands of other Canadians whose ancestors were part of a massive immigration from the British Isles to Ontario in the early 19th century. Originally the Bells were one of the troublesome "riding clans" of the Scottish borders. (Another Bell group originated as an offshoot form Clan MacMillan in western Argyllshire) Many moved or were moved to Ireland in the early 17th century "Plantation" of Ulster, where their descendants remain to the present, as Ulster Scots. By the early 19th century severe economic depression, land pressures, and increased friction with the native Irish were widespread. It lead to a major emigration of Ulster Scots to North America, and particularly to Upper Canada. Their imprint on the character of Ontario persists to the present. After describing the nature and character of the countryside and of the Bells generally in the Scottish Borders and in Ulster, the author follows his maternal ancestors as they experience the hardships of emigration in 1832 ("the cholera year") and deal with the demands of pioneering in a new country. Originally they settled just southwest of Peterborough, but subsequently were attracted northwards when the Haliburton Highlands were opened for settlement. There the Canadian Shield provided severely limited prospects for farming and the family relocated to north Simcoe County. When the Canadian Northwest was opened for settlement in the late 19th century, several family members moved to what became today's Prairie Provinces. Those that remained in Ontario abandoned farming in the early 20th Century in favour of city life in a rapidly growing Toronto. Today's descendants are widely dispersed across central and western Canada and in the western United States. The author draws on a wide spectrum of material - official records, contemporary newspapers and published accounts, family records, letters and interviews to provide a vivid backdrop for the lives of his Bell family over time. Material and information has been collected by him over twenty-five years, in Scotland, Ireland , Canada, and the Unites States. Reaction from Readers "There are several reasons to buy and read this book...if you would like to be inspired by the methodlology of a trained academic researcher and writer, this is a book for you...[This] is a work that speaks to us directly and immediately from the times and circumstances under consideration. You are to be congratulated on such an impressive piece." Fintan Mullan - Executive Director, Ulster Historical Foundation I just finished your book and felt at the end that your family history was virtually our family history. This is a wonderful study that I would call "middle history"... somewhere between global history and individual history (biography). Congratulations. What a tremendous amount of research you have done! I hope that this book becomes well known because, undoubtedly, it will save others a good deal of time in their family research. A really strong point of the work is the well-reconstructed social and physical back
