Book Historic Homes of New England Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Homes of New England Classic Reprint written by Mary Harrod Northend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Homes of New England Tm: study of Old houses grows in interest with each additional discovery of good material, such as can be found in the old New England towns and cities, more especially those along the seacoast. The preservation Of these Old houses has done much to give us correct ideas' of the interiors, though many of these, with the change of owners, have been stripped of their colonial furnishings. Most of the houses that are shown in this book are private homes which have been opened by the owners to allow pictured representations of correct ancestral furnishing. Houses such as these possess the great est charm - ancestral homes that have descended from generation to generation in the same family since their founding. It has been a great pleasure to be allowed to visit these old mansions, which show wonderful staircases, richly carved mantels, and colonial windows, each one of which is an architectural gem. Through pictured homes like these one is given a deeper interest in the early life of our country and realizes more than ever before what the colonial period stood for in home building. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Homes: A Summer's Sketch-Book Happily, the existing old Halls and Manor-houses - once the homes of so many of those whose names are inseparably associated with this country's annals - are neither few in number nor widely separated. Our purpose has been confined to the selection of a few of the most interesting of these residences as types of the whole class; and while sketching on the spot their ex ternal aspects as they exist 50-day, we have blended with the descriptions those picturesque associations that every where group themselves around old English homes. Book Old English Houses

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Houses: The Record of a Random Itinerary The last twenty years or so has shown a universal advance in taste, especially regarding the appreciation and preservation of old buildings in which our country fortunately is still so rich. Compare for example the restoration of a church in the 'seventies or 'eighties, with the careful and judicious restoration of to-day; or the adaptation of modern requirements to an old house thirty or forty years ago. But the word "restoration," however modified, does not harmonise with ancient buildings, and though the busy wheels of progress travel rapidly, there are still out-of-the-way nooks and corners in old England where, like the slower movements of a clock, things proceed as tardily as they did a century or more ago. Book Old Colonial Houses in Maine

Download or read book Old Colonial Houses in Maine written by Emma Huntington Nason and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Colonial Houses in Maine: Built Prior to 1776 The sketches in this volume present a brief record of some of the old colonial houses that are now standing in Maine, and that were built prior to 1776. The work does not profess to be complete in its lists, nor exhaustive in its details, but rather to describe certain buildings that represent the development of the early colonial dwelling from the ancient log garrison house and first framed cottage to the grandest of our colonial mansions, and to give, if possible, a brief glimpse into the lives of the people who converted these houses into homes. Many of the houses now popularly known as old colonial do not, however, fall within our period; for they were not erected until after the Revolution. The three decades from 1790 to 1820, during which peace and prosperity became assured in Maine, were rich in stately homes built on the best colonial models; and examples of these houses are now found in nearly all of our coast and river towns. Such houses, however, since they are not truly colonial, are necessarily excluded from our present consideration. If the following sketches give to the reader a characteristic picture of our early colonial homes and of the life of the men and women who dwelt therein, the mission of the book will be fulfilled. Download or read book Old Manor Houses Classic Reprint written by Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Manor Houses The proper anti logical way of composing a picture-book is for the author first to tell his story in the text, and for the artist afterwards to illustrate what the writer's brains and pen have developed and described. In this book I ant forced to put the cart before the horse. The pictures must tell the story, in the first place, and the text be but an accessory - a film reel with captions added by the producer! No deep antiquarian or architectural knowledge must therefore be expected, but just a few facts and impressions gathered during weeks, and sometimes months, spent in the atmosphere of these old houses, and in many cases jotted down as notes on the margin of sketches. I present, then, in text and picture, my sketchbook of old houses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Homes and Their Furnishings The wonderfully good collection of antiques for which Salem is noted was of great interest to me, being owned by personal friends who kindly consented to allow me for the first time to go through their homes and pick out the cream of their inheritance. If the readers are half as interested in these objects as I have become, - growing enthusiastic in the work through the valuable pieces found, - they will enjoy the pictures of colonial furnishings, many of which cannot be duplicated in any other collection of antiques. Family bits, wonderful old Lowestoft, and other treasures are included, all brought over in the holds of cumbersome ships, at the time when the commerce of Salem was at high tide. Download or read book Old English Interiors Classic Reprint written by C. J. Charles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old English Interiors Noteworthy examples, such as Haddon and Hardwick Halls, Sutton Place, Longleat, Hatfield and Burghley Houses, Ightham Moat and Warwick Castle have been carefully preserved and maintained - as we hope they will be for a long time to come - by their owners and their sucessors, but, for one reason or another, many others have been removed or destroyed. When I became interested in decorative art many years ago, I was impressed by the almost criminal ignorance which resulted in the ruthless sacrifice of work of this description. The housebreaker, for instance, was gifted with so little knowledge, that much valuable material and many models worthy of being placed in our national museums were thrown away or broken up, things beyond price, in the sense that once lost they can never be replaced. Time was when they were so lightly regarded as to be offered me for a few shillings. We have changed all that now, but the models I secured then have now proved to be of inestimable value.
