Book The Doctrines of the Mennonites

Download or read book The Doctrines of the Mennonites written by John C. Wenger and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mennonites are the present-day spiritual descendants of the evangelical Anabaptists of the sixteenth century, having been founded in Switzerland by Conrad Grebel in 1525 and in the Netherlands by Obbe Philips in 1534. Menno Simons united the Dutch Obbenites in 1536 and soon was their most prominent leader; hence the name Mennists or Mennonites. In recent decades European and American scholars have had to rewrite much of Mennonite history as a result of fresh and original studies of Anabaptism. What is the picture that is emerging? Did the Anabaptists of Switzerland, the so-called Swiss Brethren, reject the trinity? Were they legalists? Did they believe in salvation by grace through faith? Were they opposed to the private ownership of property? Did they teach insubordination to the governments of this world? In short, were they fanatics, or were they simple disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ? This volume, based on comprehensive research, attempts to give a brief and clear summary of the beliefs of the Brotherhood.

Book The Problem of Mennonite Ethics

Download or read book The Problem of Mennonite Ethics written by Abraham P. Toews and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present without reservation and in simple fashion the beliefs of the Mennonites and their uncompromising nonconformity. As such it sets forth for the first time the basis of the distinctive ethical code of the Mennonite community. It will appeal to all persons who are interested in the Christian faith, regardless of their own church affiliation. The Problem of Mennonite Ethics is divided into four parts. The first section states the problem, discusses Mennonite belief in relationship to modern theology, and sets forth the need and challenges of today. The second part expounds the biblical basis of Mennonite philosophy and theology, and compares Mennonite ethics to Humanism, Pietism, and Mysticism. Part three deals with the application of Mennonite ethics to others and the Mennonite view of the individual. Part four contains the conclusion, appendixes, and a bibliography.

Download or read book John Howard Yoder written by J Denny Weaver and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'John Howard Yoder: Radical Theologian' shows that for John Howard Yoder both theology (in particular Christology) and ethics are expressions of the meaning of the narrative of Jesus. All such statements are relative to a particular context, so thattheology and ethics are subject to reaching back to the narrative in order to restate the meaning in new and ever-changing contexts. This methodology is visible in Yoder's 'Preface to Theology', which has been little used in most treatments of Yoder's thought. Yoder has been characterised as standing on Nicene orthodoxy, criticised for rejecting Nicene orthodoxy, called heterodox, and designated a postmodern thinker to be interpreted in terms of other such thinkers. None of these characterisations adequately locates the basis of his methodology in the narrative of Jesus. Thus 'John Howard Yoder: Radical Theologian' aims to go beyond or to supersede existing treatments with its demonstration that Yoder is a radical theologian in the historical meaning of radical - that is, as one who returns to the root - but also relates his theology to the personal accusations that clouded his later years. For Christian faith, this root is Christ. Parts II and III of the book explore the sources of Yoder's approach, and its application in several contemporary contexts.
