Book excerpt: Another edition of this little book of "Glimpses of Heaven!" has been called for. It has already passed through several editions; and, having been blessed by God to many, especially among the sick and sorrowful, it is again sent forth to speak silently to the troubled heart of what is revealed to us of the things that are unseen and eternal in the Book of the Revelation. In the midst of much that is difficult to be understood prophetic of things past and to come the veil is sometimes lifted up, and the humble believer looks in and catches a glimpse of the glory which Jesus wills that he shall share. In these meditations on heavenly bliss, we should try as much as we can to render them profitable for our sanctification and growth in grace. They should be seasons of great searchings of heart, when our souls are, as it were, gazing upon the realities of eternity, in the sight of the heart-searching God, with all their inmost recesses laid bare before Him. Then would they exercise a sanctifying influence over us. We would be often restrained from what is unworthy of our heavenly hopes, by the thought of the glimpse of Heaven which has left its sweet, yet solemn remembrance. We should say, "How shall we be able to appear before our God prepared, as it were, to sit down at the marriage supper of the Lamb if we indulge this worldly temper or passion? How shall we be able to rejoice in the hope of seeing our blessed Savior if we have thus dishonored His name, or if we have thus neglected to promote His cause? How shall we meet our Lord with joy, if we thus forget Him now?" That these meditations may help the sad and tried believer to "recover their strength" on their way to their eternal home above, is the earnest prayer of the author.

Book excerpt: Revelation 1:3 "Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near!" It has been said that this is the only book in the Bible to the reading of which an especial blessing is promised. Let us, then, while we meditate upon it, expect this special blessing from a faithful, promise-keeping God. Let us expect that these glimpses of Heaven will render us more heavenly in our affections and desires -- more heavenly in our lives and thoughts. What is it we are about to meditate upon, and what glimpse is about to be displayed to our mind's eye? It is to read and hear of Heaven that we are invited. It is to see by faith the glories of the new Jerusalem, through reading and hearing the words of this prophecy, that we are encouraged. And can we do so without deriving benefit? Surely not. The natural effect of looking at things which are unseen and eternal, must be to cast a shadow over things that are seen and temporal. What comparison can that which is to last but for a short time, have with that which is to last forever! But, more than this, if the thing set before us is beautiful in itself, valuable to us, worthy of our choice, and to be our own, and our own forever -- must it not be most worthy of our regard and attention now? Must it not lead to a depreciation of everything else in comparison with it? This is the subject on which we are encouraged to meditate. It is a subject in which we have a deep personal interest. Inheritors of the kingdom of Heaven! Shall we not read with eagerness the description of our inheritance? Shall we not rejoice in our privilege and prospects, and look with longing eyes and glowing hearts towards the opening light which gives us, in the blessed book of the Revelation, even a glimpse of our glorious destiny -- our own, our purchased possession? Bought with the blood of Christ, what though we possess not lands and dwelling-places on earth -- shall we complain while we know that we have "a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens!"

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1857 edition. Excerpt: ... the fire is not quenched. Yet, if we overcome through the blood of the Lamb, we shall not be hurt of the second death. The conflict is sharp, the victory most difficult, owing to the evil of our hearts, the deceitfulness of the world, and the wiles and malice of the devil. But the believer can say, "Thanks be to God, for He hath delivered my soul from the nethermost hell." Is this our experience? Have we been taught that, but for redeeming.grace, the second death must have been ours? Have we been taught that, but for restraining grace, we should even now fall from the narrow and difficult path to heaven? Or do we think that we deserve eternal happiness, and that hell can never be our portion? Even the full assurance of hope which is given to the advanced believer, does not dim his sense of the danger from which he has been snatched, and of the necessity of constant fear lest he should come short of the promised rest. The way of fear and trembling is the way of safety. But while we work out our salvation with fear and trembling, let us rejoice in the Saviour's assurance--" He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death." "A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, A never-dying soul to save, And fit it for the sky. To serve the present age, My calling to fulfil; O may it all my powers engage To do my Master's will. "Arm me with jealous care, As in thy sight to live; And, oh! thy servant, Lord, prepare A strict account to give. Teach me to watch and pray, And on thyself rely; Assur'd if I my trust betray I shall for ever die." 14th Sunday. "I am He that searcheth the reins and hearts, and I will give to every one of you according to your works." Rev. ii. 23. The reward which Christ here promises his people is a reward of grace, ...

Book excerpt: When my wife died, I wanted to know everything I could learn about Heaven, for I suddenly realized I knew very little about the subject. As a result, I began an in-depth and prolonged study on Heaven. Since I believe there is only one true source of information on this subject, I turned to the Holy Bible. Amazed at the abundance of information I discovered in the Bible, I quickly realized that most of that information is veiled in the background of major biblical events and can be easily overlooked. My book presents some of the most important revelations I learned about Heaven from the Holy Bible. The accounts I learned have deepened my faith and brought comfort to my suffering soul. I pray that as you read my book, you will also find strength, hope, and comfort. - Cal Hunter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As societies live with diversity and yet struggle with both social fragmentation and increasing economic inequalities, populism is once again rising. Populist ethno-nationalist discourse seeks to ignite fear and hate, promote marginalization and exclusion of those who are regarded as not belonging to "the people". What is the role and responsibility of theology and the churches in the midst of these developments? Church leaders and teaching theologians from eighteen different countries offer analyses, trace emerging global trends and outline some country-specific developing situations. Examples are given of how churches take up the challenge to resist exclusion and advocate for strengthening participatory processes and people's agency. Widerstand gegen Ausgrenzung.

The Book of Psalms is known as the Bible’s songbook—Jesus knew all 150 psalms intimately, and relied on them to face every situation, including his death. Two decades ago, Tim Keller began reading the entire Book of Psalms every month. The Songs of Jesus is based on his accumulated years of study, insight, and inspiration recorded in his prayer journals. Kathy Keller came to reading the psalms as a support during an extended illness. Together they have distilled the meaning of each verse, inviting readers into the vast wisdom of the psalms. If you have no devotional life yet, this book is a wonderful way to start. If you already spend time in study and prayer, understanding every verse of the psalms will bring you a new level of intimacy with God, unlocking your purpose within God’s kingdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning, the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—have stressed the importance of transmitting religious identity from one generation to the next. Today, that sustaining mission has never been more challenged. Will young people have a faith to guide them? How can faith traditions anchor religious attachments in this secular, skeptical culture? The fruit of a historic gathering of scholars and religious leaders across three faiths and many disciplines, this important book reports on the religious lives of young people in today’s world. It’s also a unique inventory of creative and thoughtful responses from churches, synagogues, and mosques working to keep religion a significant force in those lives. The essays are grouped thematically. Opening the book, Melchor Sanchez de Toca and Nancy Ammerman explore fundamental issues that have an impact on religion—from the cultural effects of global consumerism and personal technology to pluralism and individualism. In Part Two, leading investigators present three leading studies of religiosity among young people and college students in the United States, illuminating the gap between personal values and organized religion—and the emergence of new, different forms of spirituality and faith. How religious institutions deal with these challenges forms the heart of the book—in portraits of “best practices” developed to revitalize traditional institutions, from a synagogue in New York City and a Muslim youth camp in California to the famed French Catholic community of the late Brother John of Taizé. Finally, Jack Miles and Diane Winston weave the findings into a broader perspective of the future of religious belief, practice, and feeling in a changing world. Filled with real-world wisdom, Passing the Faith will be an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand what religions must, and can, do to inspire a vigorous faith in the next generation.
