Book Biodiversity Profile of India Book

Download or read book Biodiversity Profile of India Book written by Dr. Parimala B. and published by Shineeks Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is a variety of life on earth. For any kind of animal or plant each individual is not exactly the same as any other, nor are species or ecosystem. Biodiversity / biological diversity is a part of our daily lives and livelihood and constitutes resources upon which families, communities, nation and future generations depend. Biodiversity has numerous value in agriculture medicine, food and industry and it maintains ecological balance and evolutionary processes and has spiritual, cultural, aesthetic and recreational values. Hence, human societies rely on a vast array on biological resources and their diversity to provide for essential goods and services, direct uses include the production of food, clothing, materials for shelter and fuel and medicines. Indirect uses provide a wide variety of ecosystem services such as maintenance of composition of atmosphere, maintain soil fertility and cleanse water air. Therefore, all life forms that make up biodiversity including humans are ultimately connected to all other life forms and to their physical environment so connections among living and non-living elements keep the environment functioning and healthy. Therefore, no one living element of any ecosystem can survive independent of the others.

Book Biodiversity of the Southern Ocean

Download or read book Biodiversity of the Southern Ocean written by Bruno David and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Southern Ocean surrounding the Antarctic continent is vast, in particular, its history, its isolation, and climate, making it a unique "laboratory case" for experimental evolution, adaptation and ecology. Its evolutionary history of adaptation provide a wealth of information on the functioning of the biosphere and its potential. The Southern Ocean is the result of a history of nearly 40 million years marked by the opening of the Straits south of Australia and South America and intense cooling. The violence of its weather, its very low temperatures, the formation of huge ice-covered areas, as its isolation makes the Southern Ocean a world apart. This book discusses the consequences for the evolution, ecology and biodiversity of the region, including endemism, slowed metabolism, longevity, gigantism, and its larval stages; features which make this vast ocean a "natural laboratory" for exploring the ecological adaptive processes, scalable to work in extreme environmental conditions. Today, biodiversity of the Southern Ocean is facing global change, particularly in regional warming and acidification of water bodies. Unable to migrate further south, how will she cope, if any, to visitors from the North? Designed for curious readers to discover the immense ocean surrounding the most isolated and most inhospitable continent on the planet. Describes the Southern Ocean facing biodiversification due to global change Authored by scientists with experience of expeditions to the Southern Ocean

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the lush forests of Appalachia to the frozen tundra of Alaska, and from the tallgrass prairies of the Midwest to the subtropical rainforests of Hawaii, the United States harbors a remarkable array of ecosystems. These ecosystems in turn sustain an exceptional variety of plant and animal life. For species such as salamanders and freshwater turtles, the United States ranks as the global center of diversity. Among the nation's other unique biological features are California's coast redwoods, the world's tallest trees, and Nevada's Devils Hole pupfish, which survives in a single ten-by-seventy-foot desert pool, the smallest range of any vertebrate animal. Precious Heritage draws together for the first time a quarter century of information on U.S. biodiversity developed by natural heritage programs from across the country. This richly illustrated volume not only documents those aspects of U.S. biodiversity that are particularly noteworthy, but also considers how our species and ecosystems are faring, what is threatening them, and what is needed to protect the nation's remaining natural inheritance. Above all, Precious Heritage is a celebration of the extraordinary biological diversity of the United States.

Book Conflicts Between Biodiversity Conservation and Humans

Download or read book Conflicts Between Biodiversity Conservation and Humans written by Valeria Souza and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes readers on a journey through the history of water in the Coahuila desert. It starts by describing the beauty and mysteries of the landscape, and then explores the rock art of the original desert cultures in Coahuila, offering readers a glimpse of the sacred nature of water in the desert, as well as the rituals surrounding it. Moving on to the colonial times and the post- independence development of the region, it discusses early water management, and explores how water is managed in modern times, as well as the legal complications of the law, and how these faulty laws, designed for less arid regions, have affected a highly diverse wetland, the Cuatro Ciénegas oasis. The book then examines the biological consequences of the water loss for the aquatic plants and animals in Churince – a now extinct system within Cuatro Ciénegas. Further, it addresses how even bacteria can become extinct in this hyper-diverse microbial oasis. Lastly, after this despair and sense of loss, the book provides hope, offering suggestions for how we can transform the future, from a social and educational point of view as well as through good science and changes in policy.
