Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln The people of the commonwealth of Virginia and their patriotic governor, Thomas Jefferson, did wonderfully well in the years 1779 and 1780, the darkest years, as some men declared, of the war for American independence. They gave all that they had to the great needs of the Continental Army under Washington and for the support of the Virginia troops under Clarke and other leaders, who were driving back the savages from the Western frontier. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Abraham Lincoln This book tries to avoid, on the one hand, the formal biography with its bristling array of names and dates; and on the other, the panegyric of praise. It is a story-telling ao count emphasizing the picturesque and human phases of his career. It tries to depict the boy and man as the friend and neighbor that Lincoln himself tried to be all through life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Man of Destiny: Being the Story of Abraham Lincoln Lone, mysterious character wert thou, The revelation of thyself withheld, So that no mortal ever knew thee well; Yet many judged thee by the glimpse they caught And drew the pictures strangely opposite. The gamut of all feeling thou didst sweep, Upon thy soul did each emotion play; Thou wert the incarnation of each spell That rests upon the human spirit strange. A sphynx-like man, of many, many moods, Unique, and ever still inscrutable! This do we know - that thou wert wise and good, Kind as a woman in thy manly power. There were Indians everywhere. The whole country was a wilderness. In the heart of this wilderness was a tiny log hut. There was only one room in it. It was built of rough logs. There were large cracks between the logs. There was only a hole for the window. It was covered with oiled paper instead of glass. There were no doors. But there was an opening for a door. A bearskin hung over the opening. In this hut in the wilderness of Kentucky a baby boy was born. This baby was Abraham Lincoln. He was born in the year 1809. Book The Works of Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Works of Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 1 Besides the biography proper, comprised in twenty-six short chapters, this volume contains a liberal collection of the most treasured stories and anecdotes either told by Lincoln or concerning him. Every effort has been made to include only such "Lincoln stories" as have well-established authenticity. Here also are estimates of Lincoln's character and achievements as presented in the eloquent tribute of Robert G.Ingersoll and the memorable eulogy pronounced by Henry Watterson. The life of Lincoln cannot be fully understood without a study of his letters and speeches, including the great debates with Stephen A. Douglas. As a stump speaker and an orator of singular effectiveness Lincoln left the impress ohis genius on the body politic no less plainly marked than the influence of his character and deeds. Owing to the comparative brevity of the present Life, it has been deemed best to give here but few quotations from speeches and letters, but in the other volumes of this series all the speeches are included, together with as many of the letters as are considered interesting or important. Read in connection with the Life, these will leave little wanting that is needful to a full appreciation of the personality and public services of the "first American." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glimpse of the United States Military Telegraph Corps, and of Abraham Lincoln The golden dream of empire, which had haunted the waking and sleeping moments of the cultivated aristocratic ruling class of the Gulf States, and of the land barons of South Carolina and Georgia, aided and abetted by impracticable legislation and fanatical expressions of latitudinarian doctrines of government by agitators throughout the Northern States, had at last brought about that most deplorable of all conflicts - civil war. It was a serious hour for the principles of self-government by the people as represented by the Constitution of the great American Republic. Sumter had been fired upon, and the emblem of our nationality was lowered at the demand of revolting citizens. In this crisis, President Lincoln called upon the various States for 75,000 men to restore the authority of the National Government. Download or read book Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln Vol 2 written by Allen Thorndike Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln, Vol. 2: By Distinguished Men of His Time Upon the ground, whittling sticks, and heard me, throughout, with marked attention. Hurrying on to my appointments, I saw him then no more. I never shall forget his long, ungainly person, and plain, but even then sad and thoughtful features. He was but little known to the world, but his being the husband of my old friend of earlier days caused me to look with interest upon him. I flatter myself that I sowed good seed in good ground, which, in the providence of God, produced in time good fruit. Joshua and James Speed, now famous for their associations with Lincoln, Kentuckians and natives of Jefferson County, Kentucky, were my schoolmates, and relatives of John Speed Smith, who married my eldest sister Eliza. A few years ago Joshua was in vited to deliver a lecture at Berea College, inomy county, upon Lincoln. This college, of which I and John G. Fee were the founders, is about fourteen miles from Richmond by the old buggy road. I heard Speed's lecture with great interest, and taking him in my carriage, drove him to my sister Smith's residence, about twelve miles north-east from Berea. On the route we naturally talked much of Lincoln, of which conversation I will give some account. Joshua Speed, the son of a wealthy farmer, quit Kentucky and set up a miscellaneous store in the capital of Illinois, then a'mere backwoods village. One day an awkward green stranger of great stature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: Humble and Great Westward and northwestward in New York, in Pennsylvania, in Maryland, in Virginia and in West Virginia, in North and South Carolina, and in Georgia, the mountains rise. Beyond the mountains, sloping downward to the Missis sippi River and away to the west, is an im mense expanse of land. There Abraham Lin coln was born. There he lived and worked most of his life. There he lies buried. This land west of the mountains is rich and fertile, a land of rolling hills and broad prairies, of mountain ranges and bluegrass pastures. Sunshine blesses and burns this region in the growing season. Terrible snows and blizzards descend upon it in the winter. Forests of hard and soft woods covered the land once, except where the prairies stretched green and billowing. No man could find his way through the trackless woods without hack ing a pathway, nor could he return that same way if he had not left a blaze upon the trees as he went. Sycamores, walnuts, hickories, oaks, maples, elms, pines, and spruces lifted their heads in these forests. Huge trunks rose from tangles of underbrush and vines. Book The Solitude of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book The Solitude of Abraham Lincoln written by E. Jay Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Solitude of Abraham Lincoln: Typical Reminiscences Illustrating a Life Whose Deepest Moments Were Lived Alone Early in Lincoln's first administration he revealed himself to his Secretary of State, impressively and with his first understanding, as a man of supreme soli tude. For when Seward submitted to the President at one of the first Cabinet meetings a paper containing an offer to relieve Lincoln from the responsibility of conceiving and directing the policy of the Administra tion, Lincoln replied with gentleness of speech and without any resentment, by saying no more than this, namely, that he must alone decide and do what was necessary to be decided and done. And Seward then first caught a glimpse of the solitude and of the moral grandeur of this man. The Secretary of State then determined that he would thereafter give loyal, con stant, unhesitating support to Lincoln, and to that pledge Seward was faithful. An anecdote related to Gen. Thomas L. James at the time he was Postmaster General in Garfield's Cabinet illustrates the supreme solitude of Lincoln. A member of the Senate Committee on the Conduct of the War in Lincoln's first Administration said to Gen eral James that as time passed the world would have clearer understanding of Lincoln's solitude, and the Senator went on to say, that his first understanding of Lincoln as a man of solitude was upon an occasion when the Senator was serving as a member of the Senate Committee on the Conduct of the War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Pioneer Home to the White House: Life of Abraham Lincoln: Boyhood, Youth, Manhood, Assasination, Death The chief object of the book is to show how its hero won his position; yet it incidentally exhibits the manners and customs of the times, and section of country, in which he was reared.
