Book excerpt: In recent years EU policy towards the ‘landscape’ has become better defined, whereas at the same time the notion of ‘landscape’ itself remains elusive. The need for indicators to evaluate and monitor the effects of landscape policies and plans is urgent. What is more, landscape is one of the components considered in environmental reporting, but unlike air, soil, or water, it is difficult to measure using quantitative methods. With studies on landscape indicators being as rare as they are, this volume is an attempt to fill the gap, dealing as it does with the definition and use of specific indicators for landscape assessment and monitoring. To tackle the diverse dimensions of the landscape (whose complexity is well known), the subject is approached by a multidisciplinary team of experts in landscape ecology, landscape history, landscape perception, regional planning, strategic environmental assessment and environmental impact assessment procedures, and multi-criteria assessment methods. Individual chapters include comparative assessments of studies conducted thus far in the EU, as well as detailed analyses of ecological, historical, perceptive, land-use, and economic ways of looking at landscape. As well as providing a rich source of references for researchers studying the landscape from a variety of perspectives, the book will be required reading for European officials involved at any level in planning or assessing the landscape or environment.

Book excerpt: This book explores the opportunities offered by Strategic Environmental Assessment in the context of guaranteeing the synchronized integration of landscape (in all its aspects) within urban plans, thereby helping to overcome the constraints of rigidly framed, sector-focused laws and a purely aesthetic concept of landscape. In pursuit of this goal, various scholars have previously attempted to construct arrays of indicators relating to the different conceptions of “landscape”. This book critically examines the most complete proposals of this nature, systematizing and comparing them and, finally, offering some guidelines with respect to their codification within specific application protocols. After opening chapters exploring the origins of the problem and analysing the European normative frame for Strategic Environmental Assessment, two case studies are described and discussed. A model is then presented for the evaluation of the effects of urban plans on landscape, including in cultural and perceptual terms. The author demonstrates that, when suitably employed, Strategic Environmental Assessment can indeed facilitate the integration of environmental, economic, and social sustainability into urban planning.

Book excerpt: This book seeks to enhance the cultural dimension of sustainable development and particularly focuses on minor historic centers and their natural and rural landscapes. In a society becoming ever more globalized, without territorial restrictions in the production of goods and able to reproduce in China the goods and product characteristic of South American crafts (to mention just two extremes), the only element that can still be contextualized is heritage identity: the result of close integration between cultural assets, intangible assets and settled communities. Thus, heritage identity is one of the few elements, together with natural resources, which has the potential for economic development that is still firmly rooted in places and local populations. These towns are often the centerpiece of urban landscapes and geographical areas with original features, not always but often as individual places within networks of minor historical centers linked by shared history, traditions and/or natural elements (rivers, forests, river systems or other natural elements). They are outside the major tourist networks, even if now there is a budding interest in the touristic exploitation of these environments. So, they are the right places to pursue a sustainable and local development with a cultural perspective. This book is a product of the VIVA_EASTPART project (Valorisation and Improving of management of Small Historic Centres in the eastern PARTnership region), under the EU-funded “ENPI Eastern Partnership” program. It complements the more practically-focused work that is in production from this group, more focused on empirical approaches to the development of minor historic centers of the nations involved. Though the book has been influenced by this research and working experience, the authors are solely responsible for the content and opinions presented.

Book excerpt: Il paesaggio è un tema centrale dell'indagine geografica e soprattutto dell'insegnamento. In questo ambito il paesaggio può essere utilizzato dall'insegnante per fare entrare gli allievi in contatto con il territorio. Gli strumenti per la lettura del paesaggio sono numerosi e diversi, questa ricerca è stata elaborata con l'obiettivo di mettere a confronto due strumenti: il testo e l'immagine. A quattro classi delle scuole medie ticinesi sono state proposte delle unità didattiche basate sull'analisi di paesaggi. Ogni classe ha lavorato con entrambi gli strumenti analizzati (testo e immagini), uno era utilizzato per conoscere le caratteristiche dello spazio urbano, l'altro per quelle dello spazio rurale. Dai risultati emerge che gli allievi che hanno utilizzato come strumento d'analisi le immagini ottengono risultati migliori nell'esercizio di verifica. In ognuna delle zone definite e osservate gli indicatori sono stati rilevati con percentuali minori nelle classi che hanno analizzato lo spazio attraverso il testo. Possiamo dunque concludere che nell'ambito dell'insegnamento geografico attraverso il paesaggio, l'uso d'immagini favorisce maggiormente l'apprendimento degli allievi di scuola media, rispetto all'uso di un testo. Esorto quindi gli insegnanti di scuola media a incentivare l'uso delle immagini nella loro professione. Questo strumento, oltre a rendere l'insegnamento vivo e dinamico, favorisce un buon apprendimento degli allievi.
