Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These twenty-four papers originated at a conference held in 1999 which was dedicated to Xenophon's writings and to the many areas of Greek life for which he is a major source. The contributions, which also reflect the problems of recreating a life that we have so few facts for, are divided into seven sections which discuss: Xenophon's life; Xenophon and Socrates; Xenophon and the barbarian world; Sparta; religion and politics; Anabasis ; Hellenica . These wide-ranging papers are specialised, often based on a close reading on Xenophon's texts, and not all of the Greek is translated. Eighteen papers, plus the introduction, are in English; the remaining papers are in Italian or German.

Book Paideia The World of the Second Sophistic

Download or read book Paideia The World of the Second Sophistic written by Barbara E. Borg and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the World of the Second Sophistic, education, paideia, was a crucial factor in the discourse of power. Knowledge in the fields of medicine, history, philosophy, and poetry joined with rhetorical brilliance and a presentable manner became the outward appearance of the elite of the Eastern Roman Empire. This outward appearance guaranteed a high social status as well as political and economical power for the individual and major advantages for their hometowns in interpolis competition. Since paideia was related particularly to Classical Greek antiquity, it was, at the same time, fundamental to the new self-confidence of the Greek East. This book presents, for the first time, studies from a broad range of disciplines on various fields of life and on different media, in which this ideology became manifest. These contributions show that the Sophists and their texts were only the most prominent exponents of a system of thoughts and values structuring the life of the elite in general.

Book Deliciae Fictiles V Networks and Workshops

Download or read book Deliciae Fictiles V Networks and Workshops written by Patricia Lulof and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 1467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temples are the most prestigious buildings in the urban landscape of ancient Italy, emerging within a network of centres of the then-known Mediterranean world. Notwithstanding the fragmentary condition of the buildings’ remains, these monuments – and especially their richly decorated roofs – are crucial sources of information on the constitution of political, social and craft identities, acting as agents in displaying the meaning of images. The subject of this volume is thematic and includes material from the Eastern Mediterranean (including Greece and Turkey). Contributors discuss the network between patron elites and specialized craft communities that were responsible for the sophisticated terracotta decoration of temples in Italy between 600 and 100 BC, focusing on the mobility of craft people and craft traditions and techniques, asking how images, iconographies, practices and materials can be used to explain the organization of ancient production, distribution and consumption. Special attention has been given to relations with the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Anatolia). Investigating craft communities, workshop organizations and networks has never been thoroughly undertaken for this period and region, nor for this exceptionally rich category of materials, or for the craftspeople producing the architectural terracottas. Papers in this volume aim to improve our understanding of roof production and construction in this period, to reveal relationships between main production centres, and to study the possible influences of immigrant craftspeople.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
