Book Early Glenwood Springs

Download or read book Early Glenwood Springs written by Cynthia Hines and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally planned as the town of Defiance, Glenwood Springs was renamed for its natural hot springs along the banks of the Colorado River and for Glenwood, Iowa, the hometown of Isaac Cooper. In the early 1880s, Cooper had the vision of a spa resort here but not the finances to turn his dream into a reality. He sold out to Walter Devereux and his investors, who saw the construction of the Hot Springs Pool, Hotel Colorado, and Vapor Caves completed. Once railroads arrived in 1887, Glenwood Springs became a playground for wealthy travelers who sought out the hot springs as well as other recreational opportunities, such as hunting, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. With beautiful scenery, caves to explore, and community festivals, visitors today sustain Glenwood's economy. Located at the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers, our community has also served as a retail hub for the surrounding area from the 1880s to the present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Glenwood Springs, Colorado, circa 1957" is an anthology of newspaper accounts; over 120 rare photos and images; recipes; trivia; stories; and recollections of life as it was in the fabulous fifties in a small resort town in Colorado. Having grown up in that beautiful mountain resort, author Alice (Eames) Allan writes, "Nearly forgotten and nestled in between the War to End All Wars and modern times, 'Old Glenwood' was a wonderful place for kids to grow up. It was a town that revered its isolation, had a respect for simplicity, and protected the unrestrained innocence of its youth. "During the 1950s life in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, offered a varied mixture of the old pioneer ways and the technology advancements the rest of the country had already experienced. It was fun. And magical. We truly lived in an enchanted small town - something that should only exist on TV, even today. But it really did exist. It was perfect."

  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book The Animal Dialogues written by Craig Childs and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the finest nature writers at work in America today-a lyrical, dramatic, illuminating tour of the hidden domain of wild animals. Whether recalling the experience of being chased through the Grand Canyon by a bighorn sheep, swimming with sharks off the coast of British Columbia, watching a peregrine falcon perform acrobatic stunts at 200 miles per hour, or engaging in a tense face-off with a mountain lion near a desert waterhole, Craig Childs captures the moment so vividly that he puts the reader in his boots. Each of the forty brief, compelling narratives in The Animal Dialogs focuses on the author's own encounter with a particular species and is replete with astonishing facts about the species' behavior, habitat, breeding, and lifespan. But the glory of each essay lies in Childs's ability to portray the sometimes brutal beauty of the wilderness, to capture the individual essence of wild creatures, to transport the reader beyond the human realm and deep inside the animal kingdom
