Book excerpt: Glens Falls presents a photographic essay of a community on the Hudson River, midway between Saratoga Springs and Lake George. The book spans the years from 1860 to 1925, when Glens Falls was reaching its peak in economic, social, political, and cultural growth. Depicted in stunning images are the city's simple beginnings, the days of dirt roads traveled by horse and buggy, and its cultural emergence with opera houses, exquisite mansions, and public transportation. Clearly portrayed are the educational, religious, business, and recreational opportunities of the time.

Book Glens Falls People and Places

Download or read book Glens Falls People and Places written by Bob Bayle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Glens Falls went through a series of changes, beginning simply as the Corners, after a bend in the road from a major military installation in Fort Edward. In the 1700s, it was known as Wings Falls, and later Pearlville, Pearl Village, and Glenns Falls; but by the middle of the 1800s, it was determined to be Glens Falls, one of the wealthiest villages in the state. It was the people who settled in the town that helped to shape it. The lumber barons provided the financial backing to begin banking and insurance institutions and served as officers of every major business and governmental agency in town. Glens Falls People and Places covers the lives of the prosperous and preposterous people and their contributions to the citys development through the 20th century.

Book Queensbury and Glens Falls

Download or read book Queensbury and Glens Falls written by Bob Bayle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1762, Abraham Wing led a group of Quakers to lands he had acquired on the edge of the Adirondacks. Soon, a cluster of log cabins surrounded the mills that Wing had built at the falls on the Hudson River. By the early 19th century, Queensbury consisted of several small hamlets and the village of Glens Falls, which grew into an industrial and commercial center. Factories produced lumber, lime, paper, shirts, and cement, and the city featured many stores, churches, theaters, and a hospital. The surrounding township remained largely agricultural but offered such recreational activities as golf, swimming, fishing, boating, and skiing. After World War II, commercial momentum shifted to Queensbury as motels, tourist attractions, and shopping centers sprang up along Route 9, the main route to Lake George and the Adirondacks.

Book excerpt: How American bicyclists shaped the landscape and left traces of their journeys for us in writing, illustrations, and photographs. In the later part of the nineteenth century, American bicyclists were explorers, cycling through both charted and uncharted territory. These wheelmen and wheelwomen became keen observers of suburban and rural landscapes, and left copious records of their journeys—in travel narratives, journalism, maps, photographs, illustrations. They were also instrumental in the construction of roads and paths (“wheelways”)—building them, funding them, and lobbying legislators for them. Their explorations shaped the landscape and the way we look at it, yet with few exceptions their writings have been largely overlooked by landscape scholars, and many of the paths cyclists cleared have disappeared. In Old Wheelways, Robert McCullough restores the pioneering cyclists of the nineteenth century to the history of American landscapes. McCullough recounts marathon cycling trips around the Northeast undertaken by hardy cyclists, who then describe their journeys in such magazines as The Wheelman Illustrated and Bicycling World; the work of illustrators (including Childe Hassam, before his fame as a painter); efforts by cyclists to build better rural roads and bicycle paths; and conflicts with park planners, including the famous Olmsted Firm, who often opposed separate paths for bicycles. Today's ubiquitous bicycle lanes owe their origins to nineteenth century versions, including New York City's “asphalt ribbons.” Long before there were “rails to trails,” there was a movement to adapt existing passageways—including aqueduct corridors, trolley rights-of-way, and canal towpaths—for bicycling. The campaigns for wheelways, McCullough points out, offer a prologue to nearly every obstacle faced by those advocating bicycle paths and lanes today. McCullough's text is enriched by more than one hundred historic images of cyclists (often attired in skirts and bonnets, suits and ties), country lanes, and city streets.
