Download or read book Australian Caves and Karst Systems written by John Webb and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, part of the series Cave and Karst Systems of the World, begins with a review of the interaction between people and caves in Australia (including conservation), followed by descriptions of the spectacular cave diving sites, before comprehensively covering all the major carbonate and noncarbonate karst areas, subdivided by rock type and region, and including the origin of the caves. This is followed by broad overviews of cave minerals and speleothems, cave biology and cave fossils. Each section was written by one or more specialists in the topic and is illustrated by clear diagrams and superb colour photos. The book emphasises the unique aspects of the Australian karst, including the variability in the age of the caves (very old to very young) and the impact of isolation on the stygofauna, as well as the vertebrate fossils preserved in the caves. Written in an easy-to-read style, the book is a primary reference guide to Australian karst and represents a valuable asset for anyone interested in the topic, not only cavers and academics.

Download or read book Quarterly Essay 77 Cry Me a River written by Margaret Simons and published by Black Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Murray–Darling Basin is the food bowl of Australia, and it’s in trouble. What does this mean for the future – for water and crops, and for the people and towns that depend on it? In Cry Me a River, acclaimed journalist Margaret Simons takes a trip through the Basin, all the way from Queensland to South Australia. She shows that its plight is environmental but also economic, and enmeshed in ideology and identity. Her essay is both a portrait of the Murray–Darling Basin and an explanation of its woes. It looks at rural Australia and the failure of politics over decades to meet the needs of communities forced to bear the heaviest burden of change. Whether it is fish kills or state rivalries, drought or climate change, in the Basin our ability to plan for the future is being put to the test. “The story of the Murray–Darling Basin ... is a story of our nation, the things that join and divide us. It asks whether our current systems – our society and its communities – can possibly meet the needs of the nation and the certainty of change. Is the Plan an honest compact, and is it fair? Can it work? Are our politics up to the task?”—Margaret Simons, Cry Me a River

Download or read book Freshwater Cyanoprokaryota of North eastern Australia written by Glenn McGregor and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanoprokaryotes (also known as cyanobacteria or blue-green algae) can form a significant component of benthic, periphytic and floating microphytic assemblages across a diverse range of habitats. They contribute to the productivity of aquatic ecosystems and, in some cases, provide the major carbon source that sustains aquatic food webs. Various members of the Oscillatoriales are known to have caused animal deaths and adversely affected human health. They are also recognised as being an important contributor to and consequence of ecosystem degradation. Their ubiquity in lakes, streams and rivers throughout much of the world, and their ability to form blooms or nuisance growths rapidly are of particular interest to scientists and water managers. Despite their importance, there are very few comprehensive regional accounts of cyanoprokaryote biodiversity in the scientific literature. This volume provides the first detailed account of the freshwater Oscillatoriales of north-eastern Australia. It includes keys, morphological and ecological data for 6 families, 27 genera and 122 species, and photomicrographs and original illustrations to enable the accurate identification of natural populations based on stable and recognisable characters observable with the aid of light microscopy. Distributional data are based on the extensive surveys carried out by the author at 253 localities near lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers in Queensland and the Northern Territory as well as a review of the Australian phycological literature. Three species are newly described from the genera Leptolyngbya and Trichocoleus.
