Download or read book You are Here written by Ray Bradbury and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed with a rare combination of talents, and a clear understanding of retail, Jon Jerde has established himself not only as a hugely successful shopping and entertainment-centre architect but also as a veritable alchemist of the urban condition. The Jerde Partnership International has transformed city centres worldwide and is hired by developers and city managers to analyse sites and improve the life of a designated street or neighbourhood. The firm devises site-specific, large-scale projects in order to stimulate social and economic regeneration. This is the first ever monograph to examine thoroughly the Jerde phenomenon. 25 of the Jerde Partnership's most significant built and unbuilt projects illustrate how Jerde synthesizes commerce and public life in a way that will revolutionize the design of twenty-first-century cities. Critical essays are by architectural historian Margaret Crawford, cultural historian Norman M Klein, and architect Craig Hodges. Richly illustrated, and punctuated with Jerde's sketches and writings on his personal philosophy, the book reflects the complexity and exuberance of this influential body of work.

The story begins during the Christmas season when Kelly Severinson decides it is time to get married but not to her boyfriend. Instead, she decides to ensnare her wealthy and already-married lover, Charles Mandeley. That is a problem. The opportunity that Kelly needs to seduce Charles presents itself when Mrs. Mandeleys mother, living in another town, decides to sell the family home and move into an apartment, compelling Mrs. Mandeley to return to her childhood home to help her mother. There she renews her friendship with an old flame, and thoughts of divorce are uppermost in her mind. Both women, young and old, face challenges that change them forever. Lust, kidnapping, greed, death, and human error reshape their lives into a tangled web, and the author skillfully leads the reader to a surprising and satisfying conclusion.

Book Integral Urbanism

Download or read book Integral Urbanism written by Nan Ellin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integral Urbanism is an ambitious and forward-looking theory of urbanism that offers a new model of urban life. Nan Ellin's model stands as an antidote to the pervasive problems engendered by modern and postmodern urban planning and architecture: sprawl, anomie, a pervasive culture - and architecture - of fear in cities, and a disregard for environmental issues. Instead of the reactive and escapist tendencies characterizing so much contemporary urban development, Ellin champions an 'integral' approach that reverses the fragmentation of our landscapes and lives through proactive design solutions.

Book ESPN

  • Author : Travis Vogan
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2015-10-15
  • ISBN : 0252097866
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book ESPN written by Travis Vogan and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once a shoestring operation built on plywood sets and Australian rules football, ESPN has evolved into a media colossus. A genius for cross-promotion and its near-mystical rapport with its viewers empower the network to set agendas and create superstars, to curate sports history even as it mainstreams the latest cultural trends. Travis Vogan teams archival research and interviews with an all-star cast to pen the definitive account of how ESPN turned X's and O's into billions of $$$. Vogan's institutional and cultural history focuses on the network since 1998, the year it launched a high-motor effort to craft its brand and grow audiences across media platforms. As he shows, innovative properties like SportsCentury, ESPN The Magazine, and 30 for 30 built the network's cultural caché. This credibility, in turn, propelled ESPN's transformation into an entity that lapped its run-of-the-mill competitors and helped fulfill its self-proclaimed status as the "Worldwide Leader in Sports." Ambitious and long overdue, ESPN: The Making of a Sports Media Empire offers an inside look at how the network changed an industry and reshaped the very way we live as sports fans.

Book A Better Way to Build

Download or read book A Better Way to Build written by Michael R. Adamson and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While architects have been the subject of many scholarly studies, we know very little about the companies that built the structures they designed. This book is a study in business history as well as civil engineering and construction management. It details the contributions that Charles J. Pankow, a 1947 graduate of Purdue University, and his firm have made as builders of large, often concrete, commercial structures since the company's foundation in 1963. In particular, it uses selected projects as case studies to analyze and explain how the company innovated at the project level. The company has been recognized as a pioneer in "design-build," a methodology that involves the construction company in the development of structures and substitutes negotiated contracts for the bidding of architects' plans. The Pankow companies also developed automated construction technologies that helped keep projects on time and within budget. The book includes dozens of photographs of buildings under construction from the company's archive and other sources. At the same time, the author analyzes and evaluates the strategic decision making of the firm through 2004, the year in which the founder died. While Charles Pankow figures prominently in the narrative, the book also describes how others within the firm adapted the business so that the company could survive a commercial market that changed significantly as a result of the recession of the 1990s. Extending beyond the scope of most business biographies, this book is a study in industry innovation and the power of corporate culture, as well as the story of one particular company and the individuals who created it.
