Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regarded by his owners as the most trainable and quiet of the terrier breeds, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is a rare find indeed, Ireland's only short-legged terrier breed. Not as popular as the Emerald Isle's three taller exterminators;the Kerry Blue Terrier, the Irish Terrier, and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier;the Glen of Imaal Terrier derives from its namesake region in the county of Wicklow on the eastern seaboard. Developed as farm paws to work on the demanding countryside, Ireland's terrier breeds were indispensable in keeping the landscape free from vermin, prized for their fearlessness, independence, and minimal demands on the farmers. Author Mary Brytowski, a well-regarded Glen breeder, describes the breed in the chapter on characteristics: "This unique terrier is comfortable working vermin in the field, sleeping by the hearth or dazzling the gallery at a dog show. A natural dog, with God-given talents and true down-to-earth beauty, the Glen rightly deserves a place in the homes of pet owners and the show and obedience set, as well as of the farmers who originally bred him for everyday ratting purposes." Today the Glen is a member of the AKC Terrier Group and is enjoying increased popularity in the United States, as it has in Ireland and England for generations.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Download or read book The Glen of Imaal Terrier A Complete and Comprehensive Owners Guide To Buying Owning Health Grooming Training Obedience Understanding and written by Michael Stonewood and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-04-03 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a breed of dog that is a member of the terrier typing. The breed is also commonly known as the 'Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier' or the 'Wicklow Terrier' in reference to the breed originating from the Glen of Imaal in the County of Wicklow, Ireland. The breed was officially recognized by the Irish Kennel Club in 1934 but was only recently recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2004. The breed is belived to have been developed during the reign of Elizabeth I. Elizabeth I hired French and Hessian mercenaries to quell a rebellion in Ireland which lead to many of the mercenaries settling in the Wicklow area after the conflict. The mercenaries brought with them their low bodied hounds, which they bred with the local Irish terrier stock which eventually lead to the Glen of Imaal Terrier breed. Like many other terriers, the Glen of Imaal Terrier was originally used to hunt and kill vermin such as rats, mice, foxes, badges and otters. However the breed quickly started to be used as a general purpose farm dog due to its high levels of trainability and intelligence. In modern times the Glen of Imaal Terrier is mainly found as a household companion dog due to its affectionate and loving nature. The Glen of Imaal Terrier has a unique double coat that is wiry on the topside and much softer on the underside. The temperament of dogs is normally affected by the following factors: individual personality, heredity, training and socialization. It is therefore important to make sure that you meet the puppy's mother before purchasing a Glen of Imaal Terrier. It is also important to make sure to thoroughly socialize your Glen of Imaal Terrier with strangers, children and other animals during its puppyhood. Generally speaking, the Glen of Imaal Terrier tends to be much more easy going that most other breeds within the terrier typing. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is known to be undemanding, energetic and even-tempered which makes it a perfect household pet. It is important to note that as a working breed, the Glen of Imaal Terrier has a high amount of energy which needs to be expended. If the Glen of Imaal Terrier has a buildup of energy it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or hyperactivity. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. This guide has been designed to provide you with both precise and concise information about a Glen of Imaal Terrier's basic needs to help you provide your pet with the best quality care practices. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestseller A New York Times Notable and Critics’ Top Book of 2016 Longlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction One of NPR's 10 Best Books Of 2016 Faced Tough Topics Head On NPR's Book Concierge Guide To 2016’s Great Reads San Francisco Chronicle's Best of 2016: 100 recommended books A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book of 2016 Globe & Mail 100 Best of 2016 “Formidable and truth-dealing . . . necessary.” —The New York Times “This eye-opening investigation into our country’s entrenched social hierarchy is acutely relevant.” —O Magazine In her groundbreaking bestselling history of the class system in America, Nancy Isenberg upends history as we know it by taking on our comforting myths about equality and uncovering the crucial legacy of the ever-present, always embarrassing—if occasionally entertaining—poor white trash. “When you turn an election into a three-ring circus, there’s always a chance that the dancing bear will win,” says Isenberg of the political climate surrounding Sarah Palin. And we recognize how right she is today. Yet the voters who boosted Trump all the way to the White House have been a permanent part of our American fabric, argues Isenberg. The wretched and landless poor have existed from the time of the earliest British colonial settlement to today's hillbillies. They were alternately known as “waste people,” “offals,” “rubbish,” “lazy lubbers,” and “crackers.” By the 1850s, the downtrodden included so-called “clay eaters” and “sandhillers,” known for prematurely aged children distinguished by their yellowish skin, ragged clothing, and listless minds. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, Isenberg upends assumptions about America’s supposedly class-free society––where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early nineteenth century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics–-a widely popular movement embraced by Theodore Roosevelt that targeted poor whites for sterilization. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ’s Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty. Marginalized as a class, white trash have always been at or near the center of major political debates over the character of the American identity. We acknowledge racial injustice as an ugly stain on our nation’s history. With Isenberg’s landmark book, we will have to face the truth about the enduring, malevolent nature of class as well.

Book The Oxford Dictionary of Slang

Download or read book The Oxford Dictionary of Slang written by John Ayto and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slang is language with its sleeves rolled up, colorful, pointed, brash, bristling with humor and sometimes with hostility. Now, in The Oxford Dictionary of Slang, John Ayto has brought together over 10,000 slang words and phrases common to 20th-century English, to provide a comprehensive and highly engaging guide to the most outspoken corner of our language. Unlike most such dictionaries, this volume is organized thematically, with slang words gathered under such headings as "the body and its functions" or "sustenance and intoxication." Within each section, the words are listed chronologically, starting with the century's earliest words and phrases and progressing right through to the present day, thus illuminating the development of slang and colloquial language over the last hundred years. Word origins and other interesting features of usage are given wherever possible, as are illustrative quotations from a wide range of authors. A comprehensive A Z index lists all words included in the dictionary, so you can find a particular word quickly. From "five-finger discount" to "forty-rod whiskey," here is an authoritative and up-to-date record of slang throughout the English-speaking world.
