A translator of his Commentary on Genesis has therefore only to speak of the editions of the original, and of any features of the translation which require remark. The edition (1892) from which the present translation is made is generally quoted as the sixth. It is, however, only the fourth from Dillmann's own hand. His first edition was a revision of a commentary by August Knobel, which had already passed through two editions. What still remains of this original is indicated in the text by quotation marks, with or without mention of Knobel's name. The assignment of this portion of the narrative has been curious. M any have regarded ver. 1 as an announcement of the original creation of matter, and ver. 2 as opening with the first day. Others have included ver. 1 in the first day's works, and have regarded the opening words as meaning First of all. But, inasmuch as every one of the six days' works opens with And God said, it is required by the symmetry of the narrative that the first day's work should begin at ver. 3, and that W. 1, 2, should be regarded as introductory matter. It is no objection to this that in Exod. Xx. 11, xxxi. 17, God is said in six days to have made heaven and earth. See on the former of these places. This being so, we have in it three propositions. First, (a) originally God created the heaven and the earth. Secondly, (b) at a certain time formlessness and dark ness prevailed. Thirdly, (c) the Divine Spirit wrought upon this chaotic state. It is however worth mentioning that since the ninth edition appeared Dr Driver published a revised edition of his Introduction to the Lite rature of the Old Testament (9th Ed. 1913) and in the Addenda to that volume (pp. Xxvi - xxxiii) will be found a few notes bearing on Genesis, and particularly his last and fullest discussion of the controversy about the value of the Names of' God as a clue to the sources of the Pentateuch. He there refers with approval to articles in the Expositor by Dr Skinner, since republished in book form ('the Divine Names' in Genesis, Hodder and Stoughton and also to the Appendix in the Rev. D. C. Simpson s Pentateuchal Criticism (hodder and Stoughton, which was written at Dr Driver's suggestion and had the benefit of his revision. The ninth edition, of which this is a reprint, consequently represents the final form of this Commentary. The progress of Old Testament Criticism and of Oriental archaeological studies will doubtless modify particular statements in it, but the wide range of Dr Driver's knowledge, the accuracy of his scholarship and the sanity of his judgment cannot fail to secure a permanent value for all his work.
