Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syria: The Desert and the Sown My journey did not end at Alexandretta as this account ends. In Asia Minor I was, however, concerned mainly with archaeology; the results of what work I did there have been published in a series of papers in the Revue Archéologique, where, through the kindness of the editor, Monsieur Salomon Reinach, they have found a more suitable place than the pages of such a book as this could have offered them. I do not know either the people or the language of Asia Minor well enough to come into anything like a close touch with the country, but I am prepared, even on a meagre acquaintance, to lay tokens of esteem at the feet of the Turkish peasant. He is gifted with many virtues, with the virtue of hospitality beyond all others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Desert: The Hinterland of Algiers The form this book has taken needs perhaps a word of explanation. Descriptions of Arab art and poetry may seem out of place among travelling notes; but it has always seemed to me that the Arab is so much a child of the desert, and all he has ever done is so impregnated with the character of his own curious and peculiar birthplace, that to understand him in any particular it is always necessary to realise the desert first. Whether you consider Arab architecture, or Arab religion, or Arab poetry, or Arab philosophy, it seems that a description of the desert forms the indispensable preface to them all. Accordingly I think that, if I can succeed in giving the reader a true impression of desert scenery, he will not object to tracing the effects of that scenery in desert poetry and art. In short, I have hoped that the reader's interest would follow my own. It was the desert that aroused my own curiosity in Arab life and art, and seemed the clue to so much of Arab history, and perhaps this, to some extent, may be the case with other people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Deserts Deserts contains sixty - four full - page illustrations devoted to describing deserts, showing the mountains which cause them, the sand dunes, the desert pavement, and other conditions of the deserts; unsuspected deserts; and the life upon them. Among the illustrations of the plants of the true deserts there are photographs of those ephemeral blossoms, such as the Evening Primrose, which come forth following the infrequent rains, produce their seeds, and pass away in a few short days. There are illustrations of the trees and the 'forests of the deserts, such as the Joshua Tree, the Desert Ironwood, and the Palo Verde. There are photographs of those striking shrubs, the mesquite and Cat's - claw. In addition to the cactuses for which the deserts are most famed, there are illustrations of the animals, ranging from the Powder Post Beetle through the Centipede, Scorpion, Chuckwalla, and Side winder Rattlesnake to the Kangaroo Rat and Desert Antelope Ground Squirrel. With very few exceptions the photographs were taken in the desert. The animals were alive and active, often too active, when the pictures were made. Book Wanderings in Arabia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wanderings in Arabia Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Doughty and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2 Nearly twenty years have passed since the original edition of Mr. Doughty's narrative of his adventurous explorations in Central Arabia was published by the Cambridge Press, and it is safe to say that while the learned world of European scientists devoted to the study of Arabia and its problems, geographical, geological, archwological, botanical, ethnological, and philolo gical, has acknowledged its lasting debt to Mr. Doughty, both English literary men and the reading public at large have come into contact with the work scarcely at all. This is due in part to to the sharp division that separates men of science from critics of literature, and in part to the great length (eleven hundred pages) and costliness of the original edition. But Arabia Deserta on its appearance made a twofold claim to rank as a classic among the great travel books in our literature - first for its scientific value as a work of first-hand authority throwing a flood of light on obscure and much-vexed questions of Arabian geography and the life of the desert tribes, and secondly as a work of pure literature, appealing by the consummate art of its wonderful picture of human life in the wild uplands and town oases of Arabia, seen through the eyes of a wandering English man.
