My missionary buggy had journeyed, in all, equal to a circuit around the globe, and began to show signs of a general collapse, when help was asked from some of the churches addressed in Massachusetts, and a very cordial response was given, so that the "missionary chariot," as one said, continued to roll on. The contributors, should thtir eyes ever fall on these lines, may know that their offerings resulted in good missionary work, the full influence of which will only be known as it may be revealed to them in the great hereafter. On one trip in the fall of the year, the low lands were flooded li the tains, and for miles nearly every step was up to the horses' girths. At length the Vermillion river was reached, and the bridge was gone. Under ordinary circumstances there would be no dillictilty in fording the stream. It was now a little doubtful. For a moment my team hesitated, then in they plunged. Deeper and deeper they went at every step, till the waters came over their backs. For a few feet they seemed almost to swim, when suddenly they began to rise up, and soon the opposite bank was reached. They were fairly over, and I drew a long breath of relief and sincere thankfulness. The next day Turkey creek lay across our pathway. There, too, the bridge...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the book of Exodus treats of the deliverance of Israel from Egypt; but viewed doctrinally, it deals with redemption. Just as the first book of the Bible teaches that God elects unto salvation, so the second instructs us how God saves, namely, by redemption. Redemption, then, is the dominant subject of Exodus. Following this, we are shown what we are redeemed for-worship, and this characterizes Leviticus, where we learn of the holy requirements of God and the gracious provisions He has made to meet these. In Numbers we have the walk and warfare of the wilderness, where we have a typical representation of our experiences as we pass through this scene of sin and trial-our repeated and excuseless failures, and God's long-sufferance and faithfulness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the concept of "classical republicanism" in his analysis, Kenneth Winn argues against the common view that the Mormon religion was an exceptional phenomenon representing a countercultural ideology fundamentally subversive to American society. Rather, he maintains, both the Saints and their enemies affirmed republican principles, but in radically different ways. Winn identifies the 1830 founding of the Mormon church as a religious protest against the pervasive disorder plaguing antebellum America, attracting people who saw the libertarianism, religious pluralism, and market capitalism of Jacksonian America as threats to the Republic. While non-Mormons shared the perception that the Union was in danger, many saw the Mormons as one of the chief threats. General fear of Joseph Smith and his followers led to verbal and physical attacks on the Saints, which reinforced the Mormons' conviction that America had descended into anarchy. By 1846, violent opposition had driven Mormons to the uninhabited Great Salt Lake Basin.

Book Bah Ethics in Light of Scripture Doctrinal fundamentals

Download or read book Bah Ethics in Light of Scripture Doctrinal fundamentals written by Udo Schaefer and published by Udo Schaefer. This book was released on 2007 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a fundamental discrepancy between man as he is and man as he could be, if only he recognized his true being and purpose. Ethics is the discipline by which man can understand how he can pass from the first condition to the second. Udo Schaefer's Bah ' Ethics in Light of Scripture is an attempt to analyse the underlying structures and detect the interior architecture of the Bah ' moral system and is a step towards developing a Bah ' moral theology. Doctrinal Fundamentals, the first of two volumes, provides a historical overview of the Bah ' Faith, a systematic survey of it doctrines and an overview of the origin and derivation of moral values. It considers the metaphysical nature of human beings and human responsibilities, looks at reason and conscience, and explores liberty and its limits. Schaefer's second volume deals with concrete values - the virtues, divine commandments and principles of social ethics from a Bah ' perspective.

Book Exploring the Limits of Preclassical Mechanics

Download or read book Exploring the Limits of Preclassical Mechanics written by Peter Damerow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of when and how the basic concepts that characterize modern science arose in Western Europe has long been central to the history of science. This book examines the transition from Renaissance engineering and philosophy of nature to classical mechanics oriented on the central concept of velocity. For this new edition, the authors include a new discussion of the doctrine of proportions, an analysis of the role of traditional statics in the construction of Descartes' impact rules, and go deeper into the debate between Descartes and Hobbes on the explanation of refraction. They also provide significant new material on the early development of Galileo's work on mechanics and the law of fall.

Book excerpt: In this series of studies we do not propose to confine ourselves to the petitionary prayers of the apostle, but rather take in a wider range. In Scripture "prayer" includes much more than making known our requests to God, and this is something which His people need reminding of, and some of them instructing in, in these days of superficiality and ignorance. The very verse that presents the privilege of spreading our needs before the Lord emphasizes this very thing: "In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Phil. 4:6). Unless gratitude be expressed for mercies already received and thanks be given for granting us the continued favor of petitioning our Father, how can we expect to obtain His ear and receive answers of peace! Yet prayer, in its highest and fullest sense, rises above thanksgiving for gifts vouchsafed: the heart is drawn out in contemplating the Giver Himself so that the soul is prostrated before Him in worship and adoration.
