Book Special Considerations in the Design and Use of Small Insulating Glass Units

Download or read book Special Considerations in the Design and Use of Small Insulating Glass Units written by GG. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of small insulating glass units (IGUs) in residential construction is growing in popularity. Architects and window manufacturers use small units to recreate colonial and other historic window designs, while maintaining the energy efficiency associated with insulating glass. Small insulating glass units have unique characteristics resulting from the large interpane air-space as compared to glass thickness and the relative stiffness of the glass sheets and their inability to deform to relieve pressure differences between the ambient air and the air within the sealed interpane air-space. This research explores the relationship between glass size, glass thickness, air-space thickness, sealing conditions, exposure conditions and the resulting stresses in the glass, and performance of the units. We explore the significance of glass surface damage, spacer breather tubes, and glazing conditions as they relate to small IGUs.

Book Insulating Glazing Units

Download or read book Insulating Glazing Units written by Stephen L. Garvin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insulating glass units (IGUs), otherwise known as as sealed double- or triple-glazing units, are now commonly installed in all types of windows. They can be installed in appropriately designed timber, PVC-U, aluminium, steel and composite frames. They have better thermal insulation properties than single panes of glass and therefore enable reductions in energy use in buildings and allow designers to meet the requirements of building regulations. This Digest covers good practice in glazing with particular emphasis on ensuring long-term durability. It covers the main standards for glazing, general principles of good glazing, site and factory glazing, and specific requirements of different types of frames. It also gives a maintenance checklist for ensuring continued sound performance of the system.
