Book Glasses and Glass Ceramics for Medical Applications

Download or read book Glasses and Glass Ceramics for Medical Applications written by Emad El-Meliegy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glass ceramics are a special group of materials in which a base glass can be crystallized under carefully controlled conditions, which in turn determine the properties of the material. These materials offer a wide range of physical and mechanical properties combining the distinctive characteristics of sintered ceramics and glasses. This book provides readers with an interest in medical ceramics with the ability to start making their own glasses and glass ceramics, together with an understanding of the various factors that control the final properties of these medical and dental materials. In addition, the authors describe various industrial problems with current, clinically-used medical glass ceramics and discuss appropriate scientific solutions. Glasses and Glass Ceramics for Medical Applications will appeal to a broad audience of biomaterials scientists, ceramists, and bioengineers, particularly those with an interest in orthopedic and dental applications, as well as scientists and engineers involved in the manufacture of glasses, glazes, enamels, and other glass coatings for the medical materials industry. The book will also be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students in materials engineering and dentistry, and is suitable for use in courses on medical and dental materials.

Book Life Through My Glasses

Download or read book Life Through My Glasses written by Herbert Siegel and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life through My Glasses, a new collection of poems by Herbert Siegel, combines two additional art forms for added dimension and meaning, resulting in a unique approach, more functional than poetic icons of earlier eras. Original paintings and illustrations allow book lovers to visualize the subject of a poem, and selectively inserted "call-outs"—used ubiquitously by journalists—engage the reader in the poet's choice of a formal structure or free verse. This, his fourth collection, presents a contemporaneously written continuum of life ensconced in many forms of poetry, including universal observations of nature, ancient storytellers, gastronomy, and biographies—usually ending with a touch of sardonic humor. "Life through My Glasses is beautiful ... an intriguing form combining poems in an unusual shape, comparing life and nature ... nature and resurrection ... life immortal. I cannot add or take away from this masterpiece." —Yvonne Byrd, 2006 Senior Poet Laureate of Texas "Life through My Glasses reads beautifully, Herb. It's a grand finale for your book ... a masterpiece." —Dr. Kim Gorman, University of Kentucky, University of Houston "I have to say I feel enriched and inspired having read through your work. Thank you so much!" —Andrea Strudensky, DLitt, faculty, Vanier College, Montreal, Quebec

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller * Soon to be a TV series starring Dan Aykroyd “There aren't many books this entertaining that also provide a cogent crash course in ancient, classical and modern history.” -Los Angeles Times Beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola: In Tom Standage's deft, innovative account of world history, these six beverages turn out to be much more than just ways to quench thirst. They also represent six eras that span the course of civilization-from the adoption of agriculture, to the birth of cities, to the advent of globalization. A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the twenty-first century through each epoch's signature refreshment. As Standage persuasively argues, each drink is in fact a kind of technology, advancing culture and catalyzing the intricate interplay of different societies. After reading this enlightening book, you may never look at your favorite drink in quite the same way again.

Book Structure and Crystallization of Glasses

Download or read book Structure and Crystallization of Glasses written by Werner Vogel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structure and Crystallization of Glasses details glass structural analysis from an experimental perspective. The book is comprised of eight chapters that cover various structural concepts. The text first introduces the basic elements of glass structures, and then proceeds to discussing the development of classical structure theories. The next chapter presents research that deals with structure of prototype and original glasses. Next, the book details the position of the structural conceptions resulting from the studies. Chapter 5 talks about the crystallization behavior of glasses according to the classical studies of G. Tammann and their development. Chapter 6 deals with the effects of the composition of glass on the resulting form of a crystal phase in the course of growth. The seventh chapter discusses the microphases in glass and their relations to crystallization, and the last chapter details the directed crystallization in glass. The text will be of great use to individuals involved in the research, development, and application of glass technology, such as materials engineers and inorganic chemists.

Book Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

Download or read book Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering written by Donglu Shi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current interest in developing novel materials has motivated an increasing need for biological and medical studies in a variety of dinical applications. Indeed, it is dear that to achieve the requisite mechanical, chemical and biomedical properties, especially for new bioactive materials, it is necessary to develop novel synthesis routes. The tremendous success of materials science in developing new biomaterials and fostering technological innovation arises from its focus on interdisciplinary research and collaboration between materials and medical sciences. Materials scientists seek to relate one natural phenomenon to the basic structures of the materials and to recognize the causes and effects of the phenomena. In this way, they have developed explanations for the changing of the properties, the reactions of the materials to the environment, the interface behaviors between the artificial materials and human tissue, the time effects on the materials, and many other natural occurrences. By the same means, medical scientists have also studied the biological and medical effects of these materials, and generated the knowledge needed to produce useful medical devices. The concept of biomaterials is one of the most important ideas ever generated by the application of materials science to the medical field. In traditional materials research, interest focuses primarilyon the synthesis , structure, and mechanical properties of materials commonly used for structural purposes in industry, for instance in mechanical parts of machinery.

Book High Temperature Gas Solid Reactions in Earth and Planetary Processes

Download or read book High Temperature Gas Solid Reactions in Earth and Planetary Processes written by Penelope King and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-03 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High temperature gas-solid reactions are ubiquitous on planetary bodies, distributing chemical elements over a range of geologic settings and temperatures. This volume reviews the critical role gas-solid reactions play in early solar system formation, volcanism, metamorphism and industrial processes. The field evidence, experimental and theoretical approaches for examining gas-solid reaction are presented, building on advances in fields outside of Earth Sciences. Computational chemistry techniques are used to probe the nature of molecular clusters and solvation in volcanic vapors and mineral-gas reaction mechanisms. Specialised analytical methods for characterising solid reaction products are included since these reactions commonly form thin or dispersed films and metastable minerals. Finally, the volume contains rich field examples, laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modelling and kinetics of gas-solid reactions on Earth, Venus and beyond.
