Book excerpt: We are presenting now a partial index of the Glass Lantern Slide Collection in the Archives of Hampton University. This index was completed by Ms. Joan Charles, a volunteer worker in the Archives. Ms. Charles is also known as a talented writer, archaeologist, and photographer. At the present, this collection consists of more than 5,000 items. The slides were used to illustrate courses in art and religion. Also, they illustrated general life on the campus and in the West. This collection was principally used with the extension work of Hampton Institute. In earlier days, extension work carried the advantage of the school to people who were not in the immediate area of Hampton Institute. The objective of extension work was to aid in the progressive improvement of Black rural communities and schools. Extension work at Hampton Institute has been carried out by (1) sending teachers and workers to attend Black school meetings, conventions, and fairs to aid them in accomplishing the missions of their programs, and by systematic informal school visiting; (2) preparing publications, such as Hampton Leaflets; (3) conducting 'extension schools' in rural schools of Virginia to aid teachers and school principals in both intra- and extra-mural activities. --Fritz J. The slides at one time belonged to Gilbert Prout Girdwood, a physician and chemist who was also a pioneer in the medical use of X-rays.
