Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glasgow Hospital Reports, 1898, Vol. 1 IN response to a circular signed by the Superintendents of the Royal, Western, and Victoria Infirmaries, a meeting of medical men, mostly members of the staffs of the various Hospitals, was held in May, 1896, to consider a proposal to establish an annual volume of Glasgow Hospital Reports. The proposal was unanimously approved, and at a later date, after the necessary preliminary investigations had been made, a Committee of Management was appointed to carry it out. This Committee and the Editors had hoped to have the first volume in the hands of Subscribers towards the end of 1 897. Circumstances, however, have delayed the issue till the present time, but, with the experience gained, the Editors believe that the Subscribers may count on the annual issue of the Glasgow Hospital Reports. Book Glasgow Hospital Reports 1901 Vol 3

Download or read book Glasgow Hospital Reports 1901 Vol 3 written by George S. Middleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glasgow Hospital Reports, 1901, Vol. 3: Edited for the Committee The present article has been written at the request of the editors of the Glasgow Hospital Reports, who felt that an account of the overhauling and recataloguing of the Anatomical and Pathological Collection was a proper subject for their volume; that the more widely it was known that something new was being done for the museum in general the better it would be for that institution, and the more likely it was to be useful. Further, that this report would reach many graduates of the University and others whom the catalogues would not reach, and who, indeed, might not otherwise hear anything about this matter. More particularly the present opportunity is taken to give what is not given in the catalogue of the anatomical and pathological preparations, viz., a general account of what that section of the museum contains, to indicate some of the points Of special interest or value about it, and lastly a few things that might be done to increase its usefulness as a collection for teaching and for reference in scientific research. A full account of the work which, in the last five years, has been done in the way of overhauling and recataloguing the anatomical and pathological collection has been given in the preface to the recently issued catalogue of that section of the museum. A biography Of William Hunter and a history of the origin and formation of h& museum, and its relations to his written works, are also contained in the historical introduction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glasgow Medical Journal, 1898, Vol. 40 Pasteur himself has assisted in this enquiry. His observa tions of pus taken from the peritoneal cavity and of blood from the veins of women during the progress of fatal puerperal fever, lead him to the conclusion that a tepid saturated solution of boracic acid would prevent an attack of puerperal fever in any woman who had not some abscess before labour. He would keep such a solution near the bed during labour, and use compresses, sterilised by heat and wetted with this solution, frequently a plied. It is reported very confidently that in several F rencfi maternities, where this antiseptic has been properly used, puerperal fever has almost disappeared. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glasgow Medical Journal, 1898, Vol. 49 It is everywhere recognised that the grouping and study of special cases together is the proper method of gaining an exact knowledge of disease, and certainly for our students the difficulties of gynaecology are only to be mastered by an assiduous study of a considerable number of cases brought under their notice. It is unfortunate that our students should have to go to Berlin or some other Continental city for instruction in this subject, when material for their study is as plentiful at home, and needs only to be brought together to be of use to them. Perhaps, when we have our remodelled infirmary, some regard will be paid to the needs of this department. During the summer half year, which, owing to cleansing arrangements, consisted only of four months, we had 68 cases under our care, making in all 176 cases in the year. Metritis is, of course, the disease which gives us the highest percentage of cases. Of this there have been 9 cases in the summer months, making 30 cases throughout the year, or about 1 in every 6. For this disease our ordinary treatment is the hot douche and curettage of the endometrium. If the uterus is much enlarged, we combine with the curettage an excision of wedges of tissue from the anterior and posterior lips of the os. These operations, and the rest which the patients have while in the ward, benefit them to a considerable extent, but I have never the same feeling of satisfaction after treating a metritis as I have after, say, the removal of an ovarian cyst. There is not, by any means, the same certainty that you have cured your patient. Perhaps it is the case that a uterus once diseased can never again be perfectly healthy, but if restoration of function is any test of the health of an organ, that test has been frequently satisfied in the case of the uterus after operation for metritis. Next in frequency after metritis comes cancer of the uterus Of this we have had 7 cases, or 10 3 per cent, nearly the same proportion (11 per cent) as in the first six months of the year, These proportions indicate the frequency of this disease. In none of the 7 cases was it possible to extirpate the disease and we had to be content with merely palliative measures To my mind there is no better illustration of the danger of neglecting little things than the advanced stage at which cancerous disease comes under our care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 83: January to June, 1915 There is no record of hospitals for the sick, either under that or any other name, in pagan Rome; but it is to be supposed that some existed, for the first hospital of which we have any record was of considerable size, and history shows that all things grow from small beginnings: nothing springs suddenly into full development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guy's Hospital Reports, 1921, Vol. 71 Richard Bright was born at Queen Square, Bristol, on September 28, 1789. He was the third son of Richard Bright, who lived at Ham Green, Somerset, and was a member of the banking firm Ames, Bright and Cove. Young Bright went to school at Bristol and Exeter, and in 1808 began to study medicine at Edinburgh. In 1810 he accompanied Sir George Mackenzie to Iceland and wrote the botanical and zoological parts of Mackenzie's Travels in Iceland. The book is beautifully illustrated, and some of the smaller drawings arc by Bright. Mackenzie speaks of his pleasing manners, his cheerful and ready exertion, and his undeviating good humour. On his return he lived for two years in the house of one of the resident officers in Guy's Hospital, where he continued his medical studies, reading a paper before the Medico-Chirurgical Society on cases of erysipelas he had seen at Guy's between May and July, 1811. In the same year he also read a paper before the Geological Society on the strata in the neighbourhood of Bristol. In 1812 he returned to study at Edinburgh and graduated M.D. on September 13 with a thesis on erysipelas. From Edinburgh he went to Cambridge and was two terms at Peterhouse, but left there to come to London, where he became a pupil at the Public Dispensary under Dr. Bateman. In 1814 he started on a tour through Holland, Belgium, Berlin, Vienna, Austria and Hungary, and on his return in 1815 he arrived at Waterloo a fortnight after the battle. He observed and studied everything he came across, medical or otherwise, and in 1818 published Travels from Vienna through Lower Hungary, with some remarks on the state of Vienna during the Congress in the year 1814. The book is a well-printed quarto of over seven hundred pages, entertaining as an account of travel and full of detailed information which ought to be of value to students.
