Download or read book Modest Catalog of One Hundred Choice and Standard Varieties of Gladiolus Bulbs 1926 Classic Reprint written by Golden Rule Gardens Firm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modest Catalog of One Hundred Choice and Standard Varieties of Gladiolus Bulbs, 1926 When cutting the blooms, always allow about four good leaves to remain on the stalk, as the plant will need these leaves to form a good Vigorous bulb for the next sea son and to develop small bulblets or cormels which should be saved and planted, either with your large bulbs or by themselves the next year. These small bulblets or cor mels are new blood and will always be the same as the old bulb. New varieties are propagated from seeds which form after the flowers bloom. Dig your bulbs when the stalk turns brown, or if the season causes the stalks to keep green late in September or October, dig them when the ground is dry enough to handle nicely. Book GLADIOLUS FOR PROFIT CLASSIC

Download or read book GLADIOLUS FOR PROFIT CLASSIC written by Raymond M. Champe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gladiolus for Profit There is just one point to touch on here, and that concerns bulblets. If possible, order bulblets to be shipped to you before Winter sets in and unpack and store each separate variety in a glass fruit jar or clean tin can. Cover and mix them thoroughly with fine, clean damp sand that has been first sifted through a fine wire mesh. Window screening does nicely, or one-eighth inch galvanized screening is O. K. After being so placed the sand should be kept damp, not moist, from time to time by a little water sprinkled on the surface. Bulblets so kept will germinate, readily in the Spring when planted and produce many more bulbs than bulblets that have been allowed to go through the winter in a dry condition. Sand must be damp, not moist; moist sand will cause them to mildew. Any bulbs or bulblets that ever develop mildew should be spread out for free air circulation and exposed tothe sun as Soon as possible, and left in this condition for several days until all signs of the mildew have disappeared. Book excerpt: "Gladiolus species have their habitat in South Africa and in the southern part of Europe. Of approximately 200 species, only 12 are knows to have contributed to the development of our modern, summer-flowering varieties. Most of the varieties grown are classified according to three man types as follows: Grandifloras type which produces large, showy flowers with strong spikes and many florets open at the same time; Primulinus type which produces slender, graceful spikes and hooded florets; primulinus grandiflorus which has the composite characteristics of the other two types. Within recent years, strains have been introduced featuring ruffled, lacinated, lily-flowered and other types." -- p. [339]
