Book Glacial Tills of Northwestern Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glacial Tills of Northwestern Illinois Classic Reprint written by John Chapman Frye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glacial Tills of Northwestern Illinois The glacial deposits of northwestern Illinois have been studied for many years. However, little information has been available on the mineralogy, texture, and subsurface occurrence of the tills and other glacial materials of the region. The interpretations of the age and distribution of the several tills of this region have been more diverse and contradictory than in any other part of Illinois. It is the purpose of this report to present the results of field and laboratory studies durin the last few years, a new interpretation of the glacial history of the area, and a summary of new analytical data. Book Island Life Or The Phenomena and Causes of Insular Faunas and Floras

Download or read book Island Life Or The Phenomena and Causes of Insular Faunas and Floras written by Alfred Russel Wallace and published by . This book was released on 1880 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wallace's Island Life is one of the foundation works of zoogeography. It focused on the detailed problems of animal dispersal and speciation. Like Darwin, Wallace classified islands as either oceanic (no previous connection to a land mass) or continental (previously connected to a land mass). He considered the means by which each class of island might become colonized, the types of animals most likely to perform the necessary migrations, and the conditions-such as major climactic or geologic change-under which the migrations might have been made. Wallace was the first to use the new knowledge of Pleistocene ice ages to explain certain phenomena of animal distribution, and in Island Life he speculated about the possible causes of glaciation. He was one of the few 19th-century scientists to realize that astronomical causes alone would not suffice, but had to be combined with a corresponding elevation in the northern land mass -- Abe books website.

Book Quaternary Glaciation of the Great Lakes Region

Download or read book Quaternary Glaciation of the Great Lakes Region written by Alan Kehew and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking advantage of new technological advances in Quaternary geology and geomorphology, this volume showcases new developments in glacial geology. Honoring the legacy of Frank Leverett and F.B. Taylor's 1915 USGS monograph of the region, this book includes 12 chapters that cover diverse topics ranging from hydrogeology, near-surface geophysics, geotectonics, and vertebrate paleontology to glacial geomorphology and glacial history. Several papers make use of detailed but nuanced shaded relief maps of digital elevation models of LiDAR data; these advances are brought into historical perspective by visiting the history of geologic mapping of Michigan. Looking forward, interpretations of the shaded relief maps evoke novel processes, such as regional evolution of subglacial and supraglacial drainage systems of receding glacial margins. The volume also includes assessment of chronological issues in light of greater accuracy and precision of radiocarbon dating of plant fossils using accelerator mass spectrometry versus older techniques.

The world-class lens of Willard Clay reveals secrets about his home state that justify another nickname: the State of Hidden Delights. For Wild & Scenic Illinois, Willard Clay has crisscrossed the state's byways and trails in his search for the rare, the beautiful, the seldom-seen jewels of the Illinois landscape. Wild & Scenic Illinois is the most discerning and the most rhapsodic portrait of the natural face of Illinois ever published. Clay has gleaned images from every province in Illinois, ranging across all seasons, times, and natural subjects. His photographs are systematically grouped into Illinois's various landscape provinces, explored in an informative introduction and extended captions by naturalist Robert Hutchinson. In the photographer's introduction, Willard Clay shares his tips for tackling the technical challenges of shooting the landscape of Illinois.

Here are accounts of UFOs, accounts of odd animals seen at sea or on land, mysterious attacks by what appear to have been animals, mysterious appearances of things and people in places they could not be. Here Forts epic account of spontaneous combustion, lights in the sky, poltergeists, unseen. murderous wild animals, mysterious disappearances, manifestations of psychotic mania, speaking in tongues¾and, of course, the cow that gave birth to two lambs. All of this Fortean wonder is prefaced by a magnificent new introductory essay by Jack Womack, winner of the Philip K. Dick Award and lifetime Fortean.
