Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lake Agassiz: A Chapter in Glacial Geology The superficial material which'overlies the bed-rock with 111 this northern glaciated area has everywhere beeh ploughed up and worked over by the slowly moving ice-sheet, and at its disappearance was left in a deposit of, clay, sand, gravel and boulders, mixed in one confused mass, which 18 called till. Except in the valleys, as 'of the Mississippi at Minneapolis, where streams have assorted the'se materials and spread them in layers, the till forms the surface of nearly all of Minne sota, its thickness being from 50 to 250 feet. It is the Stony and gravelly clay, in which cellars and wells are dug; and it forms a sheet of such great extent and. Thickness that about half of the counties of western Minnesota contain no exposures of the underlying older rocks. Book Glacial Geology of the Vandalia Illinois Region Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glacial Geology of the Vandalia Illinois Region Classic Reprint written by Alan Martin Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glacial Geology of the Vandalia, Illinois, Region Kansan till is exposed in only a few places along the banks of the Kaskas kia River (vandalia Bridge Section, following manuscript, and fig. 4) and along Ramsey Creek (fig. It is recognized in the field by a zone of leaching below calcareous Illinoian till. The Kansan till is dark gray, compact, and slightly sandy. It averages 33 percent sand (standard deviation, or s=3), 42 percent silt and 25 percent clay for 21 analyses of 7 samples from 1 locality. The percentage of sand is intermediate between the two overlying Illinoian tills. Un weathered Kansan till is also distinguished by usually having two times as much calcite as dolomite and by a lower percentage of expandable clay minerals than the basal (smithboro) Illinoian till. (expandable clay minerals in this report include montmorillonite and mixed-layer clay minerals.) Preliminary fabric studies of Kansan till indicate that the Kansan ice sheet advanced from the north or northeast. The Kansan till in the Vandalia region is in the area of the eastern Kansan of Willman, Glass, and Frye (1963) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology of Illinois has been compiled from more than a century of earth science investigations in Illinois. For the first time, this information has been summarized and made accessible in one volume to help both geologists and non-geologists better understand how the state's mostly unseen geology affects, and is affected by, life on the surface. More than 200 color photographs, maps, and drawings illustrate the text. Topics include : the history of geological investigations in Illinois; the impact of the state's tectonic and structural history; the properties and classification of its rocks and sediments; the rich heritage of its land, water, and mineral resources; the threats from its geological hazards; and the application of geological information to societal issues.

Book Groundwater Depletion in the United States 1900 2008

Download or read book Groundwater Depletion in the United States 1900 2008 written by Leonard F Konikow and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A natural consequence of groundwater withdrawals is the removal of water from subsurface storage, but the overall rates and magnitude of groundwater depletion in the United States are not well characterized. This study evaluates long- term cumulative depletion volumes in 40 separate aquifers or areas and one land use category in the United States, bringing together information from the literature and from new analy- ses. Depletion is directly calculated using calibrated ground- water models, analytical approaches, or volumetric budget analyses for multiple aquifer systems. Estimated groundwater depletion in the United States during 1900-2008 totals approx- imately 1,000 cubic kilometers (km3). Furthermore, the rate of groundwater depletion has increased markedly since about 1950, with maximum rates occurring during the most recent period (2000-2008) when the depletion rate averaged almost 25 km3 per year (compared to 9.2 km3 per year averaged over the 1900-2008 timeframe).

Download or read book With Speed and Violence written by Fred Pearce and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature is fragile, environmentalists often tell us. But the lesson of this book is that it is not so. The truth is far more worrying. Nature is strong and packs a serious counterpunch . . . Global warming will very probably unleash unstoppable planetary forces. And they will not be gradual. The history of our planet's climate shows that it does not do gradual change. Under pressure, whether from sunspots or orbital wobbles or the depredations of humans, it lurches-virtually overnight. —from the Introduction Fred Pearce has been writing about climate change for eighteen years, and the more he learns, the worse things look. Where once scientists were concerned about gradual climate change, now more and more of them fear we will soon be dealing with abrupt change resulting from triggering hidden tipping points. Even President Bush's top climate modeler, Jim Hansen, warned in 2005 that "we are on the precipice of climate system tipping points beyond which there is no redemption." As Pearce began working on this book, normally cautious scientists beat a path to his door to tell him about their fears and their latest findings. With Speed and Violence tells the stories of these scientists and their work-from the implications of melting permafrost in Siberia and the huge river systems of meltwater beneath the icecaps of Greenland and Antarctica to the effects of the "ocean conveyor" and a rare molecule that runs virtually the entire cleanup system for the planet. Above all, the scientists told him what they're now learning about the speed and violence of past natural climate change-and what it portends for our future. With Speed and Violence is the most up-to-date and readable book yet about the growing evidence for global warming and the large climatic effects it may unleash.

Book Epistemologies of the South

Download or read book Epistemologies of the South written by Boaventura de Sousa Santos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the concept of 'cognitive injustice': the failure to recognise the different ways of knowing by which people across the globe run their lives and provide meaning to their existence. Boaventura de Sousa Santos shows why global social justice is not possible without global cognitive justice. Santos argues that Western domination has profoundly marginalised knowledge and wisdom that had been in existence in the global South. She contends that today it is imperative to recover and valorize the epistemological diversity of the world. Epistemologies of the South outlines a new kind of bottom-up cosmopolitanism, in which conviviality, solidarity and life triumph against the logic of market-ridden greed and individualism.

Book excerpt: Large Rivers: Geomorphology and Management explores an important topic in geomorphology and sedimentology: the form and function of major rivers. Our knowledge of the big rivers of the world is limited. It is currently difficult to recognise large rivers of the past from relict sedimentary deposits or to structure management policies for long international rivers. This exciting book brings together a set of papers on large rivers of the world, as a unique introduction to a demanding subject. The book includes thirty chapters and is organised into three sections. The first part is on the environmental requirements for creating and maintaining a major river system. The second is a collection of case studies on 14 large rivers from different continents, covering a range of physical environments. The third section includes chapters on the measurement and management of large rivers. First book to offer in a single volume state-of-the-art knowledge on management and geomorphology of large rivers of the world A pioneering study, pushing the boundaries of our knowledge related to big rivers Includes comprehensive case studies covering the major large rivers of the world including Amazon, Mississippi, Nile, Congo, Indus, and Mekong Written by a leading team of distinguished, international contributors Large Rivers: Geomorphology and Management is essential reading for postgraduate students and researchers in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, sedimentary geology, and river management. It is also of relevance to engineers and environmental consultants in the private and public sectors working on major rivers of the world.
