Download or read book Girls of the Bible Classic Reprint written by Susan Clark Handy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Girls of the Bible Hebrew women from the first played a prominent part in the history of their race. Among them were poets, prophets, leaders and saviours of their people. Miriam was second only to Moses and Aaron in the councils of the Israelites; Deborah held the highest political office among the tribes - that of Judge, since there was no king in her day. Moreover, Deborah was'a prophetess regarded with especial favor by the Lord. It was Hannah who dedicated Samuel to God, a deed which made her prominent among the mothers of Israel; and Ruth and Esther have given their names to books of the Bible. Women were chosen by Christ to be His friends and were instructed in religion as carefully as were the men. The venerable Anna hailed the infant Jesus as the Messiah, and an archangel announced the birth of the Holy Child to Mary, the most blessed of women. His method throughout was to grasp the apex ere he set to work upon the base; and latterly he was wont to commit his main idea to a few pages of notes before he proceeded to the elaboration of his chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Descriptive Sketches of the Women of the Bible, From Eve of the Old to the Marys of the New Testament It was not the design of adding essentially to Biblical Literature, neither the cacoethes scribendi, that induced the Author to increase the number of similar works which have appeared. It was the suggestion of another, enforced by the consideration, that while there are elegant Gift Books of Female Scripture Biography, there is no volume of the kind for more general reading. The Bible is a book of facts, developing all the great principles of moral obligation which concern man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Classic Reprint written by James Hastings and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible Euth herself to perfection. In the Church of St. Peters at Eone there are three domes. Standing under one of the lesser domes that flank the transept, the spectator obtains a sense of dignity and size; this is increased when he passes under the dome of the transept itself; and it becomes a wonder bordering on ecstasy when at last he stands under the sublime central dome, which appears like the vault of heaven itself. So it might seem as if there were an artistic design to bring out the character of Euth by first engaging our affection and admiration of the lesser figures. For Orpah is a sweet and attractive creature, clinging with daughterly affection to the mother of her husband, and clinging with an even greater affecticyi to the land of her birth; and Naomi, the elder woman, is more beautiful still. Her life and character are sketched in a few masterstrokes, but from them the world has learned to love her. But, after all, she is only a foil to her daughter-in-law, Euth the Moabitess. Euth is the kind of woman that draws the world after her, not by a baleful gift of beauty there is no hint that she was fair to look upon but by the lasting qualities of unselfish devotion, of lowly serviceableness, of maidenly modesty. She is one of the characters that humanity loves to remember. Not only does the preacher turn to her story with enthusiasm, but the poet, when the passion and purity of the nightingale are captivating his heart, thinks instinctively of her, and fancies that the bewitching strain is Perhaps the selfsame song that found a path Through the sad heart of Euth, when sick for home, She stood in tears amid the alien corn. Men love to study the story because it touches them with the mystery and charm of early love; women love to study it because they recognize here the best type of womanhood.4. The story itself is a simple one, made up of the ordinary elements of human life, and the actors in it are ordinary people. But, as it proceeds, the beauty of Euth scharacter is unfolded; and, from the moment of her affectionate determination to accompany Naomi, she becomes the central figure of the tale. From that point right on to the end it is emphatically the Book of Euth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Portraits of Women of the Bible

Download or read book Portraits of Women of the Bible written by Thomas E. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portraits of Women of the Bible: Old Testament Series The following character-sketches were given in the ordinary course of my pulpit ministrations. The members of the congregation were interested in them during their delivery, and the suggestion was made that they might be put into a more permanent form hence this volume. The title of the book sufficiently describes its aim; the lectures are pen-portraits, and the endeavour has been to faithfully reproduce the living features of the original. I have ventured, however, in one or two of the sketches - as e.g. In the case of Rizpah - to fill up that which was lacking in the Scripture narrative in order to give a measure of completeness to the portrait. In others a few simple lessons are suggested; but for the most part the character-sketch is allowed to speak for itself. Download or read book The Greater Men and Women of the Bible written by James Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible: Adam Joseph The desire of the Editor Of The Greater Men and Women of the Bible is to make the preaching of the present day accurate and attractive. It must attract the attention and win the heart of hearers, otherwise it makes little or no impression. One of the surest ways of securing attractiveness is a restrained use of illus trations. Touch the imagination and the heart is almost won. The illustrations in this series of books are fresh, being for the most part taken from books that have been published quite recently. And they are carefully chosen so as to make the point clear and telling. But present-day preaching must also be accurate. The Men and Women of the Bible are often chosen as subjects for popular lectures, and sometimes little attention is paid to the truth of the lecture if only it is popular. In these volumes the most author itative books have been consulted and used, so that the statements contained in them may be relied upon With confidence. Criticism is kept subordinate to construction, as it should always be in the pulpit, but the work of the critic is not forgotten any more than that of the discoverer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the Bible: Delineated in a Series of Sketches of Prominent Females Mentioned in Holy Scripture; By Clergymen of the United States Who that has ever read the story of Hagar, has not felt himself enchained by its almost matchless attractions? The incidents of which it is composed, - can any thing be more touching and beautiful, more illustrative Of the simplicity of the patriarchal age, or of the strangely diversified Operations Of human nature, or of the movements Of a Wise and wonder-working Providence? And the materials are moulded with admirable skill and effect. Throughout the whole narrative, it is nature herself speaking with inimitable grace and tenderness. And herein consists the charm of Scripture narratives generally: there is an unstudied ease about them, which no words can describe and no art can counterfeit. Among the manifold evidences that the Bible is the product of divine inspiration, this is not to be overlooked - that the pictures Of characters and scenes which it pre sents far transcend the highest human Skill; so that we are forced to the conclusion that they must have been sketched by a divine hand, and with colors which Heaven alone can supply. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Boys and Girls: How They Looked, Where They Lived, and What They Did IN this volume we have intentionally departed from the usual method of writing Bible stories for the young. We have omitted all moraliz ing and sermonizing: these are admirable in their place, but are not in keeping with our present purpose. We have endeavored to illus trate the environment of many of the young people of Biblical times. Even where the Scrip tures have not given us much incident, we have presented the historical background, and certain ancient conditions of youthful life. We have given little of the Bible narratives in re gard to our characters after the period of their youth was passed. We have taken advantage of modern research and scholarship, and have used material that is not ordinarily found in a work of this kind, presenting it, however, in simple form. Our aim has been to illuminate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophesying of Women: A Popular and Practical, Exposition of the Bible Doctrine Our aim in the preparation of this little vol ume is twofoldz - First to present in popular form an outline exposition of the doctrine of Script ure as to women's prophesying; and, secondly, to show the practical adaptations and value of the doctrine. But we discuss the Bible doctrine from the point of view, not of the essayist, or of the the ologian, or of the disinterested scientific inquirer, but of the Christian minister, whose business is to in duce all mankind to accept the teachings of God in Holy Writ as the supreme law of their lives. To this extent we Speak as an advocate. But advo cacy supposes something to advocate; and in estab lishing the doctrine for which we stand we trust that our methods are critical and scientific, and that the most careful students of Scripture will find no just grounds for censure either in our conclu sions or in the ways by which we have reached them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children of the Bible In the houses of kings and nobles, there is commonly a large room called the picture gallery. Among the paintings hung on the walls, are portraits of kings, queens, and other persons who were once famous in the world. When we look at these, we should think what they once were, and whether their lives were pious and useful, or wicked and hurtful. If they were among those who feared God, these pictures may remind us of what we should copy in their conduct. But if they did not live holy lives, then we may learn from them what to shun. Now, the Bible may be compared to the picture gallery of a king, into which we are invited to look. Here are to be seen pictures of the wise, the good, and the great, of the young and the old. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Greater Men and Women of the Bible: St. Luke Titus This narrative Luke has transmitted to us in a form which clearly Shows its Hebrew origin, and equally clearly shows that it had been re-expressed in Lukan language and transformed by Luke. It has also been re-thought out of the Hebraic into the Greek fashion. The messenger of God, who revealed to Mary the Divine will and purpose becomes to Luke the winged personal being who, like Iris or Hermes, communicates the will and purpose of God. Exactly what is the difference between the original narrative and the Greek translation it is difficult to say or to speculate; but there was a more anthropomorphic picture of the messenger in Luke's mind than there was in Mary's. Yet we believe that Luke was translating as exactly as he could into Greek the account which he had heard. He expresses and thinks as a Greek that which was thought and expressed by a Hebrew.
