Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the May Fourth movement, a growing expectation of revolution raised important intellectual issues about the position of the individual within a society in turmoil and the shifting boundaries of political and sexual identities. The theme of "revolution plus love," a literary response to the widespread insurrections and upheaval, was first popularized in the late 1920s. In her examination of this popular but understudied literary formula, Liu Jianmei argues that revolution and love are culturally variable entities, their interplay a complex and constantly changing literary practice that is socially and historically determined. Liu looks at the formulary writing of "revolution plus love" from the 1930s to the 1970s as a case study of literary politics. Favored by leftist writers during the early period of revolutionary literature, it continued to influence mainstream Chinese literature up to the 1970s. By drawing a historical picture of the articulation and rearticulation of this theme, Liu shows how changes in revolutionary discourse force unpredictable representations of gender rules and power relations, and how women's bodies reveal the complex interactions between political representation and gender roles. Revolution Plus Love is a nuanced and carefully considered work on gender and modernity in China, unmatched in its broad use of literary resources. It will be of considerable interest to scholars and students of modern Chinese literature, women’s studies, cultural studies, and comparative literature.

Book My Favorite Girlfriend Was a French Bulldog

Download or read book My Favorite Girlfriend Was a French Bulldog written by Legna Rodriguez Iglesias and published by McSweeney's. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Favorite Girlfriend was a French Bulldog is a novel told in fifteen stories, linked by the same protagonist, our narrator, who--in her own voice and channeling the voices of others--creates an unsparing, multigenerational portrait of her native Cuba. Though she feels suffocated by the island and decides to leave, hers is not just a political novel--nor just a queer novel, an immigrant novel, a feminist novel--but a deeply existential one, in which mortality, corporeality, bureaucracy, emotional and physical violence, and the American Dream define the long journey of our narrator and her beloved pet dog, who gives the book both its title and its unforgettable ending. In its daring style and structure--both playful and profound, youthful and mature - and its frank discussion of political and sexual identity, My Favorite Girlfriend was a French Bulldog marks the emergence of an original and essential new voice.

Book The Structure of Moral Revolutions

Download or read book The Structure of Moral Revolutions written by Robert Baker and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical account of moral revolutions, illustrated by historical cases that include the criminalization and decriminalization of abortion and the patient rebellion against medical paternalism. We live in an age of moral revolutions in which the once morally outrageous has become morally acceptable, and the formerly acceptable is now regarded as reprehensible. Attitudes toward same-sex love, for example, and the proper role of women, have undergone paradigm shifts over the last several decades. In this book, Robert Baker argues that these inversions are the product of moral revolutions that follow a pattern similar to that of the scientific revolutions analyzed by Thomas Kuhn in his influential book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. After laying out the theoretical terrain, Baker develops his argument with examples of moral reversals from the recent and distant past. He describes the revolution, led by the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that transformed the postmortem dissection of human bodies from punitive desecration to civic virtue; the criminalization of abortion in the nineteenth century and its decriminalization in the twentieth century; and the invention of a new bioethics paradigm in the 1970s and 1980s, supporting a patient-led rebellion against medical paternalism. Finally, Baker reflects on moral relativism, arguing that the acceptance of “absolute” moral truths denies us the diversity of moral perspectives that permit us to alter our morality in response to changing environments.

Her girlfriend, KC, has moved away; her good friend, Jake, is keeping his distance; and the resident bully has ramped up an increasingly vicious and targeted campaign to humiliate her. An over-the-top statue dedication planned for her sister, who died in Iraq, is almost too much to bear, and it doesn't help that her mother has placed a symbolic empty urn on their mantel. At the ceremony, a soldier hands Angie a final letter from her sister, including a list of places she wanted the two of them to visit when she got home from the war. With her mother threatening to send Angie to a “treatment center” and the situation at school becoming violent, Angie enlists the help of her estranged childhood friend, Jamboree. Along with a few other outsiders, they pack into an RV and head across the state on the road trip Angie's sister did not live to take. It might be just what Angie needs to find a way to let her sister go, and find herself in the process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Impressive . . . [Cristina García’s] story is about three generations of Cuban women and their separate responses to the revolution. Her special feat is to tell it in a style as warm and gentle as the ‘sustaining aromas of vanilla and almond,’ as rhythmic as the music of Beny Moré.”—Time Cristina García’s acclaimed book is the haunting, bittersweet story of a family experiencing a country’s revolution and the revelations that follow. The lives of Celia del Pino and her husband, daughters, and grandchildren mirror the magical realism of Cuba itself, a landscape of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. Dreaming in Cuban is “a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez” (The New York Times). In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the novel’s original publication, this edition features a new introduction by the author. Praise for Dreaming in Cuban “Remarkable . . . an intricate weaving of dramatic events with the supernatural and the cosmic . . . evocative and lush.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Captures the pain, the distance, the frustrations and the dreams of these family dramas with a vivid, poetic prose.”—The Washington Post “Brilliant . . . With tremendous skill, passion and humor, García just may have written the definitive story of Cuban exiles and some of those they left behind.”—The Denver Post

Book The Beta Male Revolution

Download or read book The Beta Male Revolution written by Alan Roger Currie and published by Alan Roger Currie. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Beta Male Revolution is for men in the 21st Century what Feminism was for women in the 1960s and 1970s" says Author and Professional Dating Coach Alan Roger Currie in his latest book. Most men don't want to remain 'just friends' with women. Men want either sex only from women, or a combination of sexual companionship and non-sexual companionship. Unlike men, women have as many as FOUR types of men they want to spend time with: - Men who women only want to spend time with for sexual enjoyment and satisfaction: These are 'Total Alpha males' - Men who women only want to spend time with for a combination of sexual companionship and non-sexual companionship. These are 'Alpha males with a few Beta traits and tendencies' - Men who women want to spend time with primarily for the benefit of entertaining conversation, enjoyable social companionship, and financial assistance and support. These are 'Beta males with a few Alpha traits and tendencies' - Men who women only want to spend time with for strictly platonic friendship, flattery, and to have men provide them with an 'empathetic listening ear' when they are feeling bored, frustrated, or depressed. These are 'Total Beta males' Many women socially interact exclusively with Alpha male types between the ages of 18 and 29, and then begin looking for a nice, sweet, polite, monogamy-oriented Beta male type for marriage once they reach the age of 30. Well, the Beta male types are tired of this routine, and they are now avoiding proposing to marriage to women who they perceive as "Alpha male leftovers." Beta males are now well aware that the vast majority of women want to spend time with Alpha males for sexual enjoyment and satisfaction. They are also well aware that most women want to spend time with Beta males for platonic friendship, financial favors, and entertaining conversation. The Beta Male Revolution is a brutally honest assessment of where we as a society have been, where we are now, and where we are headed regarding the state of dating, long-term romantic relationships, marriage, and monogamy vs. promiscuity vs. polyamory. Women can also learn from this book because Currie explains just why men pursue some women for short-term non-monogamous 'casual' sex only, while they pursue other totally different women for long-term romantic relationships and marriage. Purchase this book right now and be educated and enlightened. You are guaranteed to have a better understanding of the manner in which the mind of the opposite sex works, and why men and women gravitate toward the type of romantic companions and sexual companions that they do after reading this book. This book will be talked about for years to come.

Download or read book Unfinished Revolution written by Kenneth E. Morris and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Together with his brother Humberto, Daniel Ortega Saavedra masterminded the only victorious Latin American revolution since Fidel Castro's in Cuba. Following the triumphant 1979 Nicaraguan revolution, Ortega was named coordinator of the governing junta, and then in 1984 was elected president by a landslide in the country's first free presidential election. The future was full of promise. Yet the United States was soon training, equipping, and financing a counterrevolutionary force inside Nicaragua while sabotaging its crippled economy. The result was a decade-long civil war. By 1990, Nicaraguans dutifully voted Ortega out and the preferred candidate of the United States in. And Nicaraguans grew poorer and sicker. Then, in 2006, Daniel Ortega was reelected president. He was still defiantly left-wing and deeply committed to reclaiming the lost promise of the Revolution. Only time will tell if he succeeds, but he has positioned himself as an ally of Castro and Hugo Ch&ávez, while life for many Nicaraguans is finally improving. Unfinished Revolution is the first full-length biography of Daniel Ortega in any language. Drawing from a wealth of untapped sources, it tells the story of Nicaragua's continuing struggle for liberation through the prism of the Revolution's most emblematic yet enigmatic hero.
