Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to paint more like Manet and less like Jackson Pollock? Students of art hailed Classical Drawing Atelier, Juliette Aristides’s first book, as a dynamic return to the atelier educational model. Ateliers, popular in the nineteenth century, teach emerging artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. The educational process begins as students copy masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. The many artists at every level who learned from Classical Drawing Atelier have been clamoring for more of this sophisticated approach to teaching and learning. In Classical Painting Atelier, Aristides, a leader in the atelier movement, takes students step-by-step through the finest works of Old Masters and today’s most respected realist artists to reveal the principles of creating full-color realist still lifes, portraits, and figure paintings. Rich in tradition, yet practical for today’s artists, Classical Painting Atelier is ideal for serious art students seeking a timeless visual education.

Book When was Modernism

Download or read book When was Modernism written by Geeta Kapur and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commitment to modernity is the underlying theme of this volume. Through essays that are interpretive and theoretical, the author seeks to situate the modern in contemporary cultural practice. She sets up an ideological vantage point to view modernism along its multiple tracks in India and the third world. The essays divide into three sections. The first two sections, Artists and ArtWork and Film/Narratives, raise questions of authorship, genre, and contemporary features of national culture that materialize into an aesthetic in the Indian context. The last section, Frames of Reference, formalizes the polemical options developed across the book. The essays here propose resistance to the depoliticization of narratives, and affirm an open-ended engagement with the avant-garde. They explore the possibility of art practice finding its own signifying space that is still a space for radical transformation.Geeta Kapur is an independent art critic and curator living in New Delhi. Her extensive publications on modern Indian art include the book Contemporary Indian Artists (Delhi, 1978), exhibition catalogues and monographs on artists. She is currently writing a monograph on Tyeb Mehta. Her essays on cultural criticism have been widely presented in forums of art history and cultural studies. Her curatorial work includes the show Bombay/Mumbai 1992 2001 in the multi-part exhibition titled Century City: Art and Culture in the Modern Metropolis , at Tate Modern, London, in 2001. Geeta Kapur is a founder-editor of the Journal of Arts & Ideas and advisory editor to Third Text. She has held research fellowships at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi, and Clare Hall, Cambridge University. For the past three decades, [Geeta Kapur s] has been the singular dominant presence in the field to a point that her writings alone seem to have constituted the whole field of modern Indian art theory and criticism. Tapati Guha-Thakurta, Biblio (Delhi), May June 2001. Geeta Kapur is a magisterial presence in the sphere of modern Indian art. [The] insistence on the primacy of bearing witness to creative practice has been the leitmotif of Kapur s work. . . . Kapur s contribution . . . is best understood by reflection on the radical change that her activity has brought about in Indian art criticism. Ranjit Hoskote, Art India (Mumbai), Vol. VI, 1, 2001. When Was Modernism is a book of essays: imaginative, interpretive, argumentative, polemical, political and, in the combined sense of all these, historical. . . . [It] provides an instance of passionate engagement that, at its best moments, verges on the poetic. Chaitanya Sambrani, ART AsiaPacific (Australia), Issue 30, 2001.

Book The Cat That Walked by Himself Illustrated

Download or read book The Cat That Walked by Himself Illustrated written by Rudyard Kipling and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare edition with unique illustrations. Kipling wrote some of the best animal stories for children, including his Jungle Books and Just So stories. His language is rich, inventive, and sonorous. He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature. Originally collected in Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories in 1902, The Cat that Walked by Himself is one of the best-loved cat tales ever written. It is a story of the beginning of domesticated life: Man meets Woman and they move into a cave and set up the first household. Dog, Horse, and Cow come out of the Wild Woods and become tame. But Cat refuses, "I am not a friend and I am not a servant. I am the Cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me." Woman makes a bargain with Cat to allow him to come into the cave and sit by the fire and drink milk. But when night comes, he is once again the Cat that walks by himself.

Book Dreams of a Viking Wedding

Download or read book Dreams of a Viking Wedding written by John David Muth and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are poems of a son, caregiver to a father, whose 'mop and broom/put me through college' and who now faces 'A wall of white bottles/[that] stands in front of him like a firing squad, ' and of a middle-aged bridegroom, skating through the relationship stresses of wedding preparations and finding that 'decades of bachelorhood/have acclimated me/to dead silence and cold dinner.' Don't let the wit and seemingly carefree flips of phrase here fool you-if you can stop chuckling long enough, you will note the fine craftsmanship and mature earned wisdom of these poems. And the heart. -Kelley Jean White, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowship Recipient, author of Toxic Environment & Two Birds in Flame Dreams of a Viking Wedding is filled with John Muth's arrow-sharp observations, sometimes acidic wit, and always-engaging use of language. Muth gives readers a very satisfying arc, an autobiography we can follow a poem-at-a-time. In each poem, we feel we get to know the poet all the better. Muth's poetry is that of the Everyman, yet the poet's voice is unmistakably his own in this excellent collection. I enjoyed reading Dreams of a Viking Wedding and will return to re-enjoy it again soon. -Michael A. Griffith, author of the chapbooks Bloodline (The Blue Nib), Exposed (Soma Publishing), and New Paths to Eden (Kelsay Books) John Muth is poetry's Clark Kent. Within an anonymous college administrator who finds it "hard to be inconsequential," lives a new Ken Padgett who mines ordinary life to its core. His father's pill bottles line up on the kitchen table, "like a firing squad." The light above his desk is "a psychotic hornet trapped in a bucket." Escape beckons, but "elation like a running jump from a cliff only lasts a moment"-John soldiers on, a wry smile intact. -Lew Maltby, author of Smiling Axes (Kelsay Books)
