Download or read book Diary of a Lonely Girl or The Battle against Free Love written by Miriam Karpilove and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published serially in the Yiddish daily newspaper di Varhayt in 1916–18, Diary of a Lonely Girl, or The Battle against Free Love is a novel of intimate feelings and scandalous behaviors, shot through with a dark humor. From the perch of a diarist writing in first person about her own love life, Miriam Karpilove’s novel offers a snarky, melodramatic criticism of radical leftist immigrant youth culture in early twentieth-century New York City. Squeezed between men who use their freethinking ideals to pressure her to be sexually available and nosy landladies who require her to maintain her respectability, the narrator expresses frustration at her vulnerable circumstances with wry irreverence. The novel boldly explores issues of consent, body autonomy, women’s empowerment and disempowerment around sexuality, courtship, and politics. Karpilove immigrated to the United States from a small town near Minsk in 1905 and went on to become one of the most prolific and widely published women writers of prose in Yiddish. Kirzane’s skillful translation gives English readers long-overdue access to Karpilove’s original and provocative voice.

Download or read book Talking Up written by Rosamund Else-Mitchell and published by Spinifex Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drives young women and what drives them mad? Twentysomething women talk about their feminism. What they do, how they do it and why they choose to do it as feminists. Exploring a range of personal and political experiences, this collection defines the landscape in which young women stake their claim to feminism. The private collides with the public, anger with humour, desire with ideals. Writing themselves into the debate, these young women are 'talking up'. Covering a diversity of themes including relationships between older and younger women (and feminists), experiences of young migrant women, feminist activism, the marginalisation of non-white and lesbian women, the emerging role of young women in corporate, legal and educational institutions. Although young women have been publicly silent, they are neither indifferent, nor dispassionate about feminism. This book shows the diversity and depth of young women's ideas.
Download or read book Scarlett s Sisters written by Anya Jabour and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarlett's Sisters explores the meaning of nineteenth-century southern womanhood from the vantage point of the celebrated fictional character's flesh-and-blood counterparts: young, elite, white women. Anya Jabour demonstrates that southern girls and young women faced a major turning point when the Civil War forced them to assume new roles and responsibilities as independent women. Examining the lives of more than 300 girls and women between ages fifteen and twenty-five, Jabour traces the socialization of southern white ladies from early adolescence through young adulthood. Amidst the upheaval of the Civil War, Jabour shows, elite young women, once reluctant to challenge white supremacy and male dominance, became more rebellious. They adopted the ideology of Confederate independence in shaping a new model of southern womanhood that eschewed dependence on slave labor and male guidance. By tracing the lives of young white women in a society in flux, Jabour reveals how the South's old social order was maintained and a new one created as southern girls and young women learned, questioned, and ultimately changed what it meant to be a southern lady.
Download or read book The Notebook Girls written by Julia Baskin and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-15 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're just a group of normal girls with normal lives. Our notebook is meant to make you laugh—and make you remember. Everyone likes to think they started the notebook. Sophie claims she stole the idea from two girls in her math class. Courtney still has a death grip on the theory that the notebook was her invention. Lindsey doesn't really care; she's just along for the ride. And Julia never knows what's going on anyway. What we do know is that we started the notebook in freshman year at Stuyvesant High School as a way to keep in contact when our conflicting schedules denied us one another's company. It allowed us to express ourselves and our views of the world in a tone of complete sarcasm, obscenity, and blind honesty. We've spent a significant portion of our adolescence trying to figure out who we are. The notebook is the closest we've come.

Download or read book Black Girl Diary written by Lizzy Guaba and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a journey of self-discovery and of honoring self Miah Prescod, 18, standing in the ashes and empires of a dystopian world, picked up her pen and wrote the matters of her heart. Black Girl Diary shares the raw and unfiltered truth of what it's like to be a Black child in America, more specifically a Black girl. It explores themes of self-love, Miah's Blackness, and what it means to be both Black and woman. While she writes to affirm and inspire Black girls everywhere, Miah's writing is also an act of embracing herself. In a world that so rarely chooses Black girls for experiences that are not harmful, Miah Prescod has discovered that putting herself first, and choosing herself first, may be the act of self-love she'd been looking for all along. Perhaps, the only one she needs. Miah has recognized her divinity, stepped into her greatness, and is here to put the truth on the table. She hopes that her work as an author, and presence in her true, unfiltered form, will inspire Black people across the world, and remind Black girls of the power they hold.
