Book Theology at Paris 1316 1345

Download or read book Theology at Paris 1316 1345 written by Chris Schabel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chris Schabel presents a detailed analysis of the radical solution given by the Franciscan Peter Auriol to the problem of reconciling divine foreknowledge with the contingency of the future, and of contemporary reactions to it. Auriol's solution appeared to many of his contemporaries to deny God's knowledge of the future altogether, and so it provoked intense and long-lasting controversy; Schabel is the first to examine in detail the philosophical and theological background to Auriol's discussion, and to provide a full analysis of Auriol's own writings on the question and the immediate reactions to them. This book sheds new light both on one of the central philosophical debates of the Middle Ages, and on theology and philosophy at the University of Paris in the first half of the 14th century, a period of Parisian intellectual life which has been largely neglected until now.

He was called the Doctor Subtilis for his penetrating and subtle manner of thought. Despite his importance and greatness, little is known about his life, and information on his life in older literature is often not correct. Book The Problem of Perception and the Experience of God

Download or read book The Problem of Perception and the Experience of God written by Sameer Yadav and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sameer Yadav's central claim in this work is that there is a radical mistake in many contemporary accounts that require grounding a theological story of God's availability to us in experience in a prior general philosophical theory of perception. Instead, it is argued that the philosophical problem of perception is a pseudoproblem. The study concludes with a new reading of Gregory of Nyssa and his theology of the spiritual senses, which is free from the bewitchment of the problem of perception.

Book Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and Theology

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and Theology written by Stephen F. Brown and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition concentrates on various philosophers and theologians from the medieval Arabian, Jewish, and Christian worlds. It principally centers on authors such as Abumashar, Saadiah Gaon and Alcuin from the eighth century and follows the intellectual developments of the three traditions up to the fifteenth-century Ibn Khaldun, Hasdai Crescas and Marsilio Ficino. The spiritual journeys presuppose earlier human sources, such as the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, and Porphyry and various Stoic authors, the revealed teachings of the Jewish Law, the Koran and the Christian Bible. The Fathers of the Church, such as St. Augustine and Gregory the Great, provided examples of theology in their attempts to reconcile revealed truth and man’s philosophical knowledge and deserve attention as pre-medieval contributors to medieval intellectual life. Avicenna and Averroes, Maimonides and Gersonides, St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bonaventure, stand out in the three traditions as special medieval contributors who deserve more attention. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of Medieval Philosophy and Theology contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 300 cross-referenced entries on important persons, events, and concepts that shaped medieval philosophy and theology. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about medieval philosophy and theology.
