Book Madame Gilbert s Cannibal

Download or read book Madame Gilbert s Cannibal written by Bennet Copplestone and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 20th-century fiction by Bennet Copplestone circles Madame Gilbert's various travels during the first world war. Her war service ended when Austria fell out, and now she shares the experiences of her several journeys and the social life and customs of the people of the places she has visited. From a historical point of view, it seems intended as a tribute to the simplicity and virtue of a noble race of islanders and a mocking criticism of 'modern civilization.' The language used throughout the work is graceful, and storytelling exciting. Excerpt from Madame Gilbert's Cannibal "The war satisfactorily won, Madame Gilbert sped home to revel in the first holiday which she had known since August, 1914. She always seems to travel with fewer restrictions and at greater speed than any except Prime Ministers and commanding Generals. In Italy she is an Italian and in France a Frenchwoman—a dazzling Italian and a very winning Frenchwoman."

Book Double Exposure

Download or read book Double Exposure written by Robert Sullivan and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Extraordinary . . . A transformative experience for the reader." —Lucy Sante "A large-hearted, wide-angled book . . . I couldn't put it down." —Ian Frazier A personal exploration of the American West and the work of one of America’s greatest photographers. Timothy O’Sullivan is America’s most famous war photographer. You know his work even if you don’t know his name: A Harvest of Death, taken at Gettysburg, is an icon of the Civil War. He was also among the first photographers to elevate what was then a trade to the status of fine art. The images of the American West he made after the war, while traveling with the surveys led by Clarence King and George Wheeler, display a prescient awareness of what photography would become; years later, Ansel Adams would declare his work “surrealistic and disturbing.” At the same time, we know very little about O’Sullivan himself. Nor do we know—really know—much more about the landscapes he captured. Robert Sullivan’s Double Exposure sets off in pursuit of these two enigmas. This book documents the author’s own road trip across the West in search of the places, many long forgotten or paved over, that O’Sullivan pictured. It also stages a reckoning with how the changes wrought on the land were already under way in the 1860s and '70s, and how these changes were a continuation of the Civil War by other means. Sullivan, known for his probing investigations of place in the pages of The New Yorker and books like Rats and My American Revolution, has produced a work that, like O’Sullivan’s magisterial photos of geysers and hot springs, exposes a fissure in the American landscape itself.

Book A Murder of Convenience

    Book Details:
  • Author : Howard of Warwick
  • Publisher : The Funny Book Company
  • Release : 2021-06-24
  • ISBN : 1913383180
  • Pages : 247 pages

Download or read book A Murder of Convenience written by Howard of Warwick and published by The Funny Book Company. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Crime Comedy continues unabated as Howard of Warwick refuses to be abated. From the Best-Selling author of this very peculiar genre comes yet more medieval murder with the usual dash of nonsense. This time, there’s murder in the air; and in the bushes, the castles, the highways and byways. And Brother Hermitage is caught in the middle of the lot; as usual. Even though he’s expecting a murder to be dropped in his lap at any moment, the arrival of this one and the manner of its delivery take him completely by surprise. As the tale unravels, a simple murder and an investigation to discover the culprit would be a bit of a relief. But the Normans seem to be at the bottom of this and their intentions are wholly dishonourable. When the church puts its nose in the mix, Wat the Weaver concludes that they are completely out of their depth. But there is a victim, or there might be, and action must be taken. A journey to Nottingham reunites them with some old friends, well, friends-ish, but they seem as confused as everyone else. At least Cwen finds an ally, which gives Wat plenty to worry about. When the weaver gets drunk and comes up with the most ridiculous suggestion for a murder investigation that any of them have ever heard, it’s clear that things have gone downhill very quickly. With very important people showing a great interest in this business, Hermitage has to be very careful with his, “aha”; if he can even come up with one that makes sense. Who did whatever it is that might have been done? Will everyone live happily ever after? Were they living happily to begin with? Read A Murder of Convenience and there’s a small chance you might find out. And then there’s the crime of Mrs Grod’s cooking. Reviews for previous volumes: 5* Brilliant tale of mayhem and murder 5* Genius, funny, endearing and a proper page turner 5* Howard of Warwick never fails to deliver a good laugh

Book Rebellion in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Rebellion in the Middle Ages written by Matthew Lewis and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This medieval history of British rebellion examines how five centuries of uprisings and insurrections helped build the United Kingdom. Shakespeare’s Henry IV lamented ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown’. It was true of that king’s reign and of many others before and after. From Hereward the Wake’s guerilla war, resisting the Norman invasion of William the Conqueror, through the Anarchy, the murder of Thomas Becket, the rebellions of Henry II’s sons, the deposition of Edward II, the Peasants’ Revolt and the rise of the over-mighty noble subject that led to the Wars of the Roses, kings throughout the medieval period came under threat from rebellions and resistance that sprang from the nobility, the Church, and even the general population. Serious rebellions arrived on a regular cycle throughout the period, fracturing and transforming England into a nation to be reckoned with. Matthew Lewis examines the causes behind the insurrections and how they influenced the development of England from the Norman Conquest until the Tudor period. Each rebellion’s importance and impact is assessed both individually and as part of a larger movement to examine how rebellions helped to build England.
