Download or read book Identification guide to the mesopelagic fishes of the western Indian Ocean written by Mostarda, E., Harold, A.S., Sutton, T.T., Hulley, P.A. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide encompasses a total of 473 species of mesopelagic fishes (i.e. those fishes residing primarily between 200 and 1 000 m depth during daytime) that are known to occur in the western Indian Ocean. It aids in their accurate identification, offering dichotomous keys to all taxa. Species are treated in detail, with accounts including the scientific name, FAO common name in English (where available), other useful characters, size, a distribution map, and one or more illustrations. Captions and arrows enhance user-friendliness for to both specialists and non-specialists in the field of ichthyology. In the broader context of marine ecology, mesopelagic fishes hold a pivotal role as integral components of the marine food web, serving both as predators and prey for various species. This guide not only enriches our understanding of these fishes but also contributes to our knowledge of the western Indian Ocean's diverse ecosystem. Beyond species identification, it sheds light on the interconnectedness of marine life and underscores the importance of conservation efforts in safeguarding this delicate balance. This guide serves as an invaluable resource for in-depth exploration and research into these remarkable fishes, offering a comprehensive tool for studying their diverse characteristics, behaviours, and ecological significance, essential elements for sustainable management and conservation practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Early Life History (ELH) of marine fishes in Fishing Area 31, which includes the western central North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, has remained incomplete over the years. This certainly wasn't because of any lack of interest, but rather a lack of a comprehensive merging of studies that would provide a broad understandi

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a study of knowledge of the sea among indigenous cultures in the South Seas to inquiries into the subject of sea monsters, from studies of Pacific currents to descriptions of ocean-going research vessels, the sixty-three essays presented here reflect the scientific complexity and richness of social relationships that characterize ocean-ographic history. Based on papers presented at the Fifth International Congress on the History of Oceanography held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (the first ICHO meeting following the cessation of the Cold War), the volume features an unusual breadth of contributions. Oceanography itself involves the full spectrum of physical, biological, and earth sciences in their formal, empirical, and applied manifestations. The contributors to Oceanographic History: The Pacific and Beyond undertake the interdisciplinary task of telling the story of oceanography’s past, drawing on diverse methodologies. Their essays explore the concepts, techniques, and technologies of oceanography, as well as the social, economic, and institutional determinants of oceanographic history. Although focused on the Pacific, the geographic range of subjects is global and includes Micronesia, East Africa, and Antarctica; the bathymetric range comprises inshore fisheries, coral reefs, and the "azoic zone." The seventy-one contributors represent every continent of the globe except Antarctica, bringing together material on the history of oceanography never before published.

Book The Living Marine Resources of the Western Central Atlantic

Download or read book The Living Marine Resources of the Western Central Atlantic written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Fao. This book was released on 2002 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three volume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Western Central Atlantic. The area of coverage includes FAO Fishing Area 31. The marine resource groups included are the bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes, sea turtles and marine mammals. The introductory chapter outlines the environmental, ecological and biogeographical factors influencing the marine biota, and the basic components of the fisheries in the Western Central Atlantic. Within the field guide, the sections on the resource groups are arranged phylogenetically according to higher taxonomic levels such as class, order and family. Each resource group is introduced by general remarks on the group, an illustrated section on technical terms and measurements and a key or guide to orders or families. Each family generally has an account summarizing family diagnostic characters, biological and fisheries information, notes on similar families occurring in the area, a key to species, a checklist of species and a short list of relevant literature. Families that are less important to fisheries include an abbreviated family account and no detailed species information. Species in the important families are treated in detail (arranged alphabetically by genus and species) and include the species name, frequent synonyms and names of similar species, an illustration, FAO common name(s), diagnostic characters, biology and fisheries information, notes on geographical distribution and a distribution map. For less important species, abbreviated accounts are used. Generally, this includes the species name, FAO common name(s), an illustration, a distribution map and notes on biology, fisheries and distribution. The final volume concludes with an index of scientific and common names. (Vol. 1 : ISBN 92-5-104825-8; Vol. 3: ISBN 92-5-104827-4)

Book Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico Vol 1

Download or read book Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico Vol 1 written by John McEachran and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2021-11-03 with total page 1128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world and contains over 15 percent of all known species of marine fishes. This diverse fish fauna has been the subject of many publications, but, until now, no work has ever surveyed all known species, including the deep sea fishes and those of the southern Gulf. This book is the first of two volumes that will cover the entire fish fauna of the Gulf of Mexico. An introductory section that outlines the Gulf's geographical setting, geological origin, current patterns, tides, sediments, meteorology, ecology, and biological exploration is followed by a key for the forty-four orders of fishes known from the Gulf. Keys and descriptions are provided for families, which are arranged phylogenetically, and for the species, which are arranged alphabetically, described, and distinguished from similar species. All but a few species are illustrated.
