Book excerpt: When Eric Johnson moved from Philadelphia a year ago, he didn't have any friends in the Lehigh Valley. Now he had a lot of them, just not the usual sort for a twelve-year old boy. Aside from Tommy Kuhns and Stephanie Fuller-two young children his own age—Eric's house was often visited by Norse Gods, Rock Dwarves, Valkyr, and unfortunately the occasional Frost Giant. And most teens weren't caught up in a war that crossed multiple dimensions. Now the Frost Giants were trying to get access to Enigma Caverns and the Lost River, so they could continue their battle against the Aesir. Eric, Tommy and Stephanie had to find out why the Giants really wanted the Lost River and stop the Giants from taking control of Enigma Caverns. Then Eric is thrown into the Lost River and disappears, and things really get strange! The Giants are looking for a way back to their home dimension and they believe Eric knows the way home, or at least how to find the way home. So they kidnap Eric’s aunt and demand an exchange: the knowledge for his aunt. But Eric has two secret weapons on his side: the ancient battle computer known as MMR and a creation of the Giants’ own laboratories—a giant dragon called Fornir.

Book excerpt: From Myths to Monsters is a grouping of some short stories written over many years. The stories are about a variety of subjects, both good and bad, and do not accept Political Correctness as an option. Be ready for a collection that goes from a highflying sorcerous/warrior to dragon’s appreciation or lack thereof, to a deadly dragon, to symbolism in stories, to a class reunion to a sneaky teacher. Be advised the good guy doesn’t always win and dragons don’t always eat their prey. I expect the grouping to find some life among the readers.

Download or read book Norse Mythology The Illustrated Edition written by Neil Gaiman and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2024-11-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller—a “gripping, suspenseful” (Washington Post) retelling of Norse myths—now with spectacular illustrations. In this dazzling, illustrated edition of the instant classic that has sold more than a million copies, award-winning illustrator Levi Pinfold brings Neil Gaiman’s bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world to life. Bursting off the page with breathtaking, full-color art are tales of fierce battles with giants, storied quests for knowledge, and the gods in Asgard: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong, yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator. Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that takes us from the genesis of the legendary nine worlds to Ragnorak, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time. Through his epic storytelling and Pinfold’s enthralling images, these gods emerge with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, breathing vivid life into these long-ago myths. “Who else but Neil Gaiman could become an accomplice of the gods, using the sorcery of words to make their stories new?” —Maria Tatar, translator and editor of The Annotated Brothers Grimm “Gaiman brings rakish mischief and severe glamour to the Norse canon.” —The New Yorker “Remarkable. . . . Gaiman has provided an enchanting contemporary interpretation of the Viking ethos.” —Lisa L. Hannett, Atlantic “A lively, funny and very human rendition of Thor the thunder god, his father Odin and the dark-hearted trickster Loki (plus countless other gods and monsters).” —Petra Mayer, NP

Download or read book Children of Ash and Elm written by Neil Price and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive history of the Vikings -- from arts and culture to politics and cosmology -- by a distinguished archaeologist with decades of expertise The Viking Age -- from 750 to 1050 -- saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture. Based on the latest archaeological and textual evidence, Children of Ash and Elm tells the story of the Vikings on their own terms: their politics, their cosmology and religion, their material world. Known today for a stereotype of maritime violence, the Vikings exported new ideas, technologies, beliefs, and practices to the lands they discovered and the peoples they encountered, and in the process were themselves changed. From Eirík Bloodaxe, who fought his way to a kingdom, to Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, the most traveled woman in the world, Children of Ash and Elm is the definitive history of the Vikings and their time.

Download or read book A story to kill time written by Laurent Peyronnet and published by Dadoclem. This book was released on 2018-05-29 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dreamlike travel in the Vikings and Lapps land ! Magnus, a ten-year old Norwegian boy, discovers a magic bookcase which enables him to travel in time through Scandinavian history. In the company of Rognetide the troll, Magnus goes off to explore the life of the Vikings in the year 1000. He meets Erik the Red, whom he follows in his different trips across the world. Discover the first volume of Magnus adventures and dive in the nordic culture and scandinavian mythology ! EXTRACT Magnus agreed with Rognetide. What else could they do? He was nevertheless terribly anxious. They were lost in this frozen wilderness, alone, with nothing to help them progress in the thick snow. A chain of snow covered hills stretched to the horizon and in between stood vast pine and birch forests. They looked dark and frightening. Now and then the shriek of a raven pierced the air, dramatically increasing the feeling of isolation and loneliness. Magnus had never imagined that you could feel so small and insignificant or be in so much danger by just being in contact with nature. At sundown, when twilight crept in, they heard wolves howling in the distance and later Rognetide picked out in the moonlight the silhouette of a pack at the top of a hill. They were not far, Rognetide remained calm and tried to be rational. ABOUT THE AUTORS Laurent Peyronnet writes novels, tales and short stories. Passionate about traveling, he discovers Norway in 1997 and falls in love with this country. He becomes guide there: during 15 years, he comes along French-speaking travelers. His novel Magnus, a story to kill time is the meeting point between his passion for writing and for Norway. Godo considers that a blank page is full of opportunities and a place where anything could appear. Since his first papers, he builds a world populated by goblins, trolls and dragons. At the present time, he works at the realisation of fantasy video games and a serie of tales (for this project, he will be illustrator, author and composer): Les contes de la forêt d'Orthana.
