Book Developmental Studies on Giant Chromosomes

Download or read book Developmental Studies on Giant Chromosomes written by W. Beermann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlier titles in this series have directed attention to selected questions of current theoretical or practical interest in developmental biology, without special emphasis upon individual biological systems. Tho choose giant polytene chromosomes as the common denominator of a new volume may at first sight seem to set rather arbitrary restrictions upon a coherent discussion of the basic problem of cellular differentiation. However, the reader will find out for hirnself that, on the contrary, such a limitation, though dicta ted by the material, focuses the analysis upon one essential point: the differential release of genetic information from operational subunits of the eukaryotic chromosome. In the organization of this volume we have not striven for completeness - some, indeed, may fee 1 that the work on Sciarids is underrepresented - but the various contributors have made every effort to render a thorough and up-to-date picture of the situation in their particular field, and on this basis to discuss all possible angles of general biological interest. Authors and editors have agreed to dedicate this volume to the memory of JACK SCHULTZ.

Book Genome Multiplication in Growth and Development

Download or read book Genome Multiplication in Growth and Development written by Vsevolod I︠A︡kovlevich Brodskiĭ and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1985 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative account of the developmental biology of genome multiplication, the reproduction of the genetic material that results in polyploid and polytene cells, is based on many years' study by its authors. Polyploid and polytene cells regularly occur in a wide range of organisms, including mammals, invertebrates, plants and protozoa. The cells also have a particular significance for the function of the tissues and organs of which they are an integral part. The first part of the book details the origin of polyploidy and polyteny in the normal development of many tissue systems. In the second part the various modes of genome multiplication, its control, and its biological significance are discussed. The book is fully referenced citing literature published in many languages, and is particularly valuable in that it includes scientific results previously available only in Russian.

Book Human Chromosomes

  • Author : Eeva Therman
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468405292
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Human Chromosomes written by Eeva Therman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, like the two previous editions, was written as an introduction to human cytogenetics, but it could also be used as a text for a general cytogenetics course, since chromosome structure and behavior are similar in all eukaryotes. Many examples in this book are from organisms other than humans, reflecting our combined backgrounds of molecular and bacterial genetics, and plant and animal cytogenetics. In the rapidly expanding field of human cytogenetics, certain subjects, for instance clinical and cancer cytogenetics, are now covered in recently published, thousand-page volumes. In this book, such subjects are presented only in outline. The enormous growth of information has also made the choice of topics and of examples to illustrate them even more arbitrary and subjective than in the previous editions. Apart from a few pages here and there, the text has been rewritten. Major parts, especially those on molecular matters, have been added. This book would not exist without the dedicated participation of Mrs. Barbara Susman. She has been involved in the project from the planning stages to the final proofreading. She has done the extensive literature research, designed most of the tables and illustrations, and edited and typed the text. For discussions and suggestions we are indebted to many colleagues. We wish especially to mention Drs. Lassi Alvesalo, Evelyn M. Kuhn, and Renata Laxova, who have critically read selected parts of the book, and Dr. Carter Denniston, who has read the whole text.

This volume deviates from previous volumes in that it focuses solely on the polytene chromosome. In an excellent and exhaustive review, I.F. Zhimulev illustrates the use and function of the polytene chromosome in three parts: morphology and structure, organization and functional role of the heterochromaticregions, and the transcription patterns and replication of the chromosome. To best illustrate the breadth and scope of research, Dr. Zhimulev includes more than 100 figures and more than 2900 references specifically relevant to the polytene chromosome. Presents technical and historical overviews of molecular biology applied to disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment Chronicles the continuing explosion of knowledge in molecular genetic medicine by highlighting current approaches to understanding human illness Documents the revolution in human and molecular genetics leading to a new field of medicine

Download or read book Chromosomes written by Adrian T. Sumner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating classical knowledge of chromosome organisation with recent molecular and functional findings, this book presents an up-to-date view of chromosome organisation and function for advanced undergraduate students studying genetics. The organisation and behaviour of chromosomes is central to genetics and the equal segregation of genes and chromosomes into daughter cells at cell division is vital. This text aims to provide a clear and straightforward explanation of these complex processes. Following a brief historical introduction, the text covers the topics of cell cycle dynamics and DNA replication; mitosis and meiosis; the organisation of DNA into chromatin; the arrangement of chromosomes in interphase; euchromatin and heterochromatin; nucleolus organisers; centromeres and telomeres; lampbrush and polytene chromosomes; chromosomes and evolution; chromosomes and disease, and artificial chromosomes. Topics are illustrated with examples from a wide variety of organisms, including fungi, plants, invertebrates and vertebrates. This book will be valuable resource for plant, animal and human geneticists and cell biologists. Originally a zoologist, Adrian Sumner has spent over 25 years studying human and other mammalian chromosomes with the Medical Research Council (UK). One of the pioneers of chromosome banding, he has used electron microscopy and immunofluorescence to study chromosome organisation and function, and latterly has studied factors involved in chromosome separation at mitosis. Adrian is an Associate Editor of the journal Chromosome Research, acts as a consultant biologist and is also Chair of the Committee of the International Chromosome Conferences. The most up-to-date overview of chromosomes in all their forms. Introduces cutting-edge topics such as artificial chromosomes and studies of telomere biology. Describes the methods used to study chromosomes. The perfect complement to Turner.
