The extent of research, the careful note taking, all the factors that the author incorporated into the book shows a degree of dedication and care that would be difficult to surpass."

Download or read book In Her Lifetime written by Committee to Study Female Morbidity and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-03-20 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relative lack of information on determinants of disease, disability, and death at major stages of a woman's lifespan and the excess morbidity and premature mortality that this engenders has important adverse social and economic ramifications, not only for Sub-Saharan Africa, but also for other regions of the world as well. Women bear much of the weight of world production in both traditional and modern industries. In Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, women contribute approximately 60 to 80 percent of agricultural labor. Worldwide, it is estimated that women are the sole supporters in 18 to 30 percent of all families, and that their financial contribution in the remainder of families is substantial and often crucial. This book provides a solid documentary base that can be used to develop an agenda to guide research and health policy formulation on female health--both for Sub-Saharan Africa and for other regions of the developing world. This book could also help facilitate ongoing, collaboration between African researchers on women's health and their U.S. colleagues. Chapters cover such topics as demographics, nutritional status, obstetric morbidity and mortality, mental health problems, and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Book The Extracellular Matrix an Overview

Download or read book The Extracellular Matrix an Overview written by Robert Mecham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-16 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is essential to understand cellular differentiation, tissue development, and tissue remodeling. This volume of the series “Biology of Extracellular Matrix” provides a timely overview of the structure, regulation, and function of the major macromolecules that make up the extracellular matrix. It covers topics such as collagen types and assembly of collagen-containing suprastructures, basement membrane, fibronectin and other cell-adhesive glycoproteins, proteoglycans, microfibrils, elastin, fibulins and matricellular proteins, such as thrombospondin. It also explores the concept that ECM components together with their cell surface receptors can be viewed as intricate nano-devices that allow cells to physically organize their 3-D-environment. Further, the role of the ECM in human disease and pathogenesis is discussed as well as the use of model organisms in elucidating ECM function.

Book excerpt: This book represents the culmination of a unique scholarly initiative located at the dynamic intersection of medical history and the digital humanities. It also represents an important outcome of the longstanding partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) with Virginia Tech (VT) as a key collaborator. The specific initiative which led to this book-Viral Networks: An Advanced Workshop in Digital Humanities and Medical History-was a landmark moment in the NEH/NLM partnership dating from 2012when these agencies signed an agreement to "bring together scholars, scientists, librarians, archivists, curators, technical information specialists, healthcare professionals, cultural heritage professionals, and others in the humanities and biomedical communities in order to share expertise and develop new research agendas representing the commitment of the NLM to supporting scholarship in medical history and digital humanities."Viral Networks represents true collaboration and commitment among a group of dedicated scholars, two federal agencies and their strategic partners, and one of America's most important public, land-grant, research universities. And this book represents such collaboration and commitment even more because it is available from VT Publishing in an open-access format, for all to appreciate as the studies therein engage undiscovered or underappreciated primary sources, push methodological boundaries to define and articulate new arguments, and chart new research trajectories. Indeed, this book defines the scholarly times in which its organizers conceived and published it as much as these times define the book itself.

Book excerpt: Since the last meeting "Myocardial Biopsy - Diagnostic Signifi cance" was held under the auspices of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology (ISFC) in Munich, many new data and new aspects have been developed in the field of myocardial dis eases. Most importantly, the classification of cardiomyopathies and specific heart muscle diseases, as described in the report of the WHO-ISFC task force (see reference 1 in the Introduction), is now widely accepted as a basis for clinical practice and scientific work. Investigators from all over the world have again assembled un der the auspices of the ISFC at an international workshop on viral heart disease and its implications with regard to congestive cardio myopathy, which was held in Munich January 1983. This book con tains the significant results of the workshop. For practical use, the authors have incorporated important points made in the discussions into their contributions and a subject index has been provided. First of all I should like to thank Professor Riecker, Director of the Medizinische Klinik, Klinikum Grol3hadern, University of Mu nich, West Germany. Without his friendly support in many aspects, this meeting would not have been possible. I should like to thank Professor Goodwin and Dr. Olsen from the ISFC for their active participation and advice in organizing the meeting. Last but not least, I am particularely grateful to all the contributors, whose co operation has made this book possible.

Book The Munchausen Complex

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard L. Matteoli
  • Publisher : Dog Ear Publishing
  • Release : 2011-03
  • ISBN : 1598585320
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book The Munchausen Complex written by Richard L. Matteoli and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Conquer Thyself: Socialization of violence and abuse is often highly structured through the Munchausen Complex. Munchausen Syndrome occurs when an individual harms themselves for attention and self-glorification. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is when an individual harms another, usually under their care. Attention and self-glorification are achieved through their victim's subsequent medical treatment. Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy is a crime with a victim. Violence and abuse are often common in families, passed down from one generation to the next and may be termed Transgenerational Munchausen Syndrome as these families expand and their habits are introduced into society. Munchausen Syndrome in Collective Transmission occurs when such practices become an acceptable part of society often eventuating into full acculturation. In this way societies attach themselves to self-glorification with various explanations of justification. A Mandated Report is required to be filed by health care, legal, social service and educational professionals who suspect child abuse, as well as developers of film. As socialized beings, we are often unaware why we think what we think and why we do what we do. Exploring beneath the surface, we may discover we are not who we imagine we are. Are our subtle perversions and aberrations so different from those of the ancients, or other cultures we label primitive? The author was under military orders not to discuss the subjects presented in this part's Mandated Report on child abuse to the social body for the last six years of his U.S. Navy career. Censorship is strong when one questions social norms, folkways and rituals that address issues of identity. Internal, interpersonal and professional conflicts arise.
