Book My Sister from the Black Lagoon

Download or read book My Sister from the Black Lagoon written by Laurie Fox and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was born into a mentally ill family. My sister was the officially crazy one, but really we were all nuts." So begins My Sister from the Black Lagoon, Laurie Fox's incandescent novel of growing up absurd. Lorna Person's tale is wrested from the shadows cast by her sister, Lonnie, whose rages command the full attention of her parents. Their San Fernando Valley household is off-key and out of kilter, a place where Lonnie sees evil in the morning toast and runs into the Burbank hills to join the animals that seem more like her kin. Lorna, on the other hand, is an acutely sensitive girl who can't relate to Barbie. "Could Barbie feel sorrow? Could Barbie understand what it's like to be plump, lonely, Jewish?" My Sister from the Black Lagoon is a wisecracked bell jar, a heartbreaking study of sane and crazy. Laurie Fox's delightful voice is knowing yet wide-eyed, lyrical, and witty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of a dedicated couple who, while in retirement, are out of touch with the current events of the world. Daniel, a former scholar of political theory, has withdrawn from reality because his tired, old memory has failed. Judiths care for him goes beyond obligation. It is the result of an unfailing love of many decades. The president calls for Daniel visit to New York City to discuss his earlier writings on political theory. While there, Daniel is given an experimental drug called Memrestor. When his mental acuity is restored, he finds that the United States has become a dystopia. He is torn between his desire to return to the shadowy, fanciful world he came from while in retirement or stay in the real world and help restore the American heritage he believed in. In his earlier writings, Daniel had foresaw what he was now experiencing and had proposed constitutional changes to avoid the calamitous results. Although the drug, Memrestor, restored Daniels memory, it had side effects. The hallucinations he had while retired intensified. His vivid dreams give him insight of how the American political world degenerated. The archangel Raphael shows him allegorical views of the dystopia and finally brings Daniel to a sublime level.

Book Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse

Download or read book Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse written by P. O'Connor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-12-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin American Fiction and the Narratives of the Perverse contains analysis of sexual perversion and narrative creativity in fictions from the Latin American boom and post-boom. O'Connor's main argument is that orthodox criticism of Latin American literature has neglected the eccentric singularities of other fictive trends in the corpus (especially in the second half of the twentieth-century). At the same time, by examining these eccentric singularities in their relationship to mainstream trends in the Latin American corpus, O'Connor forces his readers to view these master narratives and major trends (such as modernismo or magical realism) from surprisingly new angles. Five of the authors discussed (Puig, Lezama, Lima, Cortazar and Sarduy) have an established place in the Latin American literary canon. A fifth one, Rosario Ferre, may have come close to achieving that status with her earlier fictions. Others (Felisberto Hernandez, Alicia Borinsky, Cristina Peri Rossi and Silvia Molloy) are less well known, but they are certainly highly significant authors for scholars and students of contemporary Latin American fiction.
