Book excerpt: In this mystery thriller, a determined writer sets out to prove that the Resolute desk in the Oval Office in Washington D.C. is a fake. Annabelle knows where the genuine desk is and, not only that, she believes lost souls haunt the desk. The Resolute desk was made from the timbers of a nineteenth century British ship that sailed into the Arctic on a quest to find the Northwest Passage and the lost explorer, Sir John Franklin. Hopelessly trapped in the ice, her crew abandoned the ship. The HMS Resolute eventually broke free, sailing 1,200 miles in the treacherous icy waters. Did the ship navigate by chance or did a ghost crew guide her? Annabelle is a docent at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. The museum highlights the life and times of President Reagan including a replica room of the Oval Office containing a replica Resolute desk. When unexplained and even dangerous events happen in the museum, Annabelle searches for clues within the desk's secret drawers and within its very timbers. The curator Rusty, overworked and nervous, brings together rare artifacts for an exhibit on the HMS Resolute and lost Arctic explorers. A prize relic of the Inuit is a mystical Wind-Maker Spirit mask whose powerful magic awakens spirits forgotten and forlorn. Annabelle's feisty daughter, Whitney, a security guard at the museum, struggles with post-traumatic stress after her military service. She doesn't believe in ghosts until she becomes the target of a malevolent entity. Whitney's erratic mood swings threaten her sanity and her rocky romance with another guard, the handsome Alex, adds to the drama. As Annabelle strives to solve the mystery of the Resolute desk, spirits evil and primitive rise endangering those she loves. Hidden within a frozen lost world is the answer if only the seekers can survive to find it.

Book Ghosts of Presidents Past A Reckoning

Download or read book Ghosts of Presidents Past A Reckoning written by James Mikel Wilson and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:

“Ghosts of Presidents Past – A Reckoning” serves as a metaphor for the chaos in American politics from 2015 -2020. The work combines historical fiction with political parody and humor.

Normally we don’t see ghosts and phantoms except on Halloween when trick-or-treaters knock on front doors. If Halloween in government existed, how might twenty-three former US presidents, beginning with George Washington, respond to the siren call to visit a president who ignores the Constitution and suppresses and manipulates information for political gain? What if that president disrespected his obligations to the Nation’s revered institutions and the American public? What if he lacked moral fiber and used the office for personal gain? What if he had attained the highest office in the land through unscrupulous means? What if his ego drove him to manipulate the truth to enhance his image? What if he bullied his opponents and called them sophomoric names? What if he alienated friends and stalwart allies?

What if that president disrespected his obligations to the Nation’s revered institutions and the American public? What if he lacked moral fiber and used the office for personal gain? What if he had attained the highest office in the land through unscrupulous means? What if his ego drove him to manipulate the truth to enhance his image? What if he bullied his opponents and called them sophomoric names? What if he alienated friends and stalwart allies?

In “Ghosts of Presidents Past,” President Daniel Hands violates the public trust. He desecrates the Oval Office so egregiously that past occupants return to confront him. What could they say to POTUS that might reform him? During their journey, each shares some relevant success and regrets while in office.

“Ghosts of Presidents Past – A Reckoning” encapsulates many of the more shocking public utterances and events over the last several years where each new one often eclipses its predecessor.

“Ghosts” will entertain readers who enjoy presidential history. The visiting presidents bring some surprises and share some little known or forgotten moments in their lives. The book will speak primarily to moderate Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” provided the inspiration for this book. And like his work, it is political satire and a statement of the times.

The author is a Proud Supporter of NPR and PBS, Houston Public Media stations. Readers can follow the author on www.jamesmikelwilson.com, Instagram and The Authors Guild.

The setting again is the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum where excitement is high when an exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci and his masterpieces and devices is about to open. The most curious of the devices Leonardo created is tempus machina. Historians conclude that the device was Leonardo's attempt at a perpetual motion machine. Annabelle, a docent at the presidential library, believes otherwise. Her psychic senses tell her that the device is indeed a time machine. The museum's curator, Rusty hopes to introduce museum goers to the genius and wizardry of the Renaissance artist. His assistant Whitney, who is Annabelle's daughter, has returned home after a personal tragedy. Rusty has loved her since they first met when Whitney was a security guard at the library. Whitney, who served as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, faced many life-threatening situations in combat. She could not have imagined the intense danger she, her mother and Rusty would encounter when the time machine unexpectedly animates. Past, present, and the future collide in interweaving stories that begins with the audacious theft of Leonardo's priceless masterpiece...the Mona Lisa...and ends...well, time will tell.

Book Theodore Roosevelt s Ghost

Download or read book Theodore Roosevelt s Ghost written by Michael Patrick Cullinane and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after his death, Theodore Roosevelt remains one of the most recognizable figures in U.S. history, with depictions of the president ranging from the brave commander of the Rough Riders to a trailblazing progressive politician and early environmentalist to little more than a caricature of grinning teeth hiding behind a mustache and pince-nez. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost follows the continuing shifts and changes in this president’s reputation since his unexpected passing in 1919. In the most comprehensive examination of Roosevelt’s legacy, Michael Patrick Cullinane explores the frequent refashioning of this American icon in popular memory. The immediate aftermath of Roosevelt’s death created a groundswell of mourning and goodwill that ensured his place among the great Americans of his generation, a stature bolstered by the charitable and political work of his surviving family. When Franklin Roosevelt ascended to the presidency, he worked to situate himself as the natural heir of Theodore Roosevelt, reshaping his distant cousin’s legacy to reflect New Deal values of progressivism, intervention, and patriotism. Others retroactively adapted Roosevelt’s actions and political record to fit the discourse of social movements from anticommunism to civil rights, with varying degrees of success. Richard Nixon’s frequent invocation led to a decline in Roosevelt’s popularity and a corresponding revival effort by scholars endeavoring to give an accurate, nuanced picture of the 26th president. This wide-ranging study reveals how successive generations shaped the public memory of Roosevelt through their depictions of him in memorials, political invocations, art, architecture, historical scholarship, literature, and popular culture. Cullinane emphasizes the historical contexts of public memory, exploring the means by which different communities worked to construct specific representations of Roosevelt, often adapting his legacy to suit the changing needs of the present. Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost provides a compelling perspective on the last century of U.S. history as seen through the myriad interpretations of one of its most famous and indefatigable icons.

Book The Ghost in the White House Some Suggestions As to How a Hundred Million People

This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ghost in the White House Some suggestions as to how a hundred million people (who are supposed in a vague, helpless way to haunt the white house) can make themselves felt with a president, how they can back him up, express themselves to him, be expressed by him, and get what they want by Gerald Stanley Lee I have come to have the feeling-especially in regard to political conventions, that it might not be amiss to put forward some suggestions just now as to how a hundred million people can strike-make themselves more substantial, more important in this country, so that we shall really have in this country in time a hundred million people who, taken as a whole, feel important in it-like a Senator for instance-like Senator Lodge, like sugar even, or like meat or like oil, like Trusts that won't trust, and Congressmen that won't play and workmen that won't work-I am thinking out ways in this book in which the hundred million people can come to feel as if it made a very substantial difference to somebody what they wanted and what they thought-ways in which the hundred million people shall be taken seriously in their own country, and like a Profiteer, or like a noble agitator, or like a free beautiful labor union, -get what they want. II THE LONESOMEST JOB ON EARTH What is going to happen to the next President the day after he is inaugurated, a few minutes after it, when he goes to the place assigned to him, or at least that night? The Ghost in the White House. The White House is haunted by a vague, helpless abstraction, a kind of ghost of a nation, called the people. The only way the Nation, in the White House, gets in, is as a spirit. The man who lives there, if he wants to be chummy (as any man we want there would), has to commune with a Generalization. What we really do with a President is to pick him deliberately up out of his warm human living with the rest of us, with people who, whatever else is the matter with them, are at least somebody in particular, lift him over in the White House, shut him up there for four years to live in wedlock with An Average, to be the consort day and night of Her Who Never Was, and Who Never Is-a kind of vague, cold, intellectual, unsubstantial, lonely, Terrible Angel called the People. Just a kind of light in Her eyes at times. That is all there is to Her. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
