"Well, ain't you two just the smartest little historians," he drawled, his ghostly voice carrying the hint of a Southern accent. "You're right, of course. This town, this forsaken patch of desert—it's a character in our little drama, just as much as any of us." Sarah found her voice, though it trembled. "You were a doctor once, weren't you? You took an oath to preserve life. How can you be part of this... this endless slaughter?" Holliday's smile turned bitter. "Preserve life? My dear, life preserved me, trapped me in a body racked with consumption, in a world that only valued a man by how fast he could draw. I came west to die with my boots on, and by God, I did." His figure flickered, and for a moment, they saw him as he must have been in life—pale, wracked with coughs, yet his eyes burning with a fierce vitality. "But you did more than die," Mark said. "You killed. You, the Earps, the Cowboys—you turned this place into a symbol of violence." "Violence?" Holliday spat. "Boy, you don't know the half of it. The O.K. Corral was just the spark.
