Published in 1918, this collection is known for its exploration of social issues, particularly the harsh realities faced by immigrants and the working class in the early 20th century. Lola Ridge's poems often address themes of poverty, labor struggles, and the immigrant experience, drawing on her own observations and experiences. "The Ghetto," one of the central poems in the collection, delves into the struggles of immigrant communities in urban environments. Ridge's poetry is characterized by its vivid and compassionate portrayal of marginalized individuals, and she was an advocate for social justice and workers' rights. Her work reflects the tumultuous times of the early 20th century, marked by industrialization, urbanization, and the challenges faced by those on the margins of society. "The Ghetto and Other Poems" stands as a testament to Lola Ridge's commitment to using poetry as a means of shedding light on social issues and advocating for change. Immerse yourself in Ridge's poignant verses to experience the vivid narratives and impassioned voices of those often overlooked in the broader historical narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.H. Melhem's clear introductions and frank interviews provide insight into the contemporary social and political consciousness of six acclaimed poets: Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks, Jayne Cortez, Haki R. Madhubuti, Dudley Randall, and Sonia Sanchez. Since the 1960s, the poet hero has characterized a significant segment of Black American poetry. The six poets interviewed here have participated in and shaped the vanguard of this movement. Their poetry reflects the critical alternatives of African American life—separatism and integration, feminism and sexual identity, religion and spirituality, humanism and Marxism, nationalism and internationalism. They unite in their commitment to Black solidarity and advancement.

Book excerpt: Never see disparity and pretend we're blind, When we learn to have wisdom And not sacrifice good for grandeur, Don't partake in parts of foolishness Getting caught up in the mazes of life, Listening to others say, "Let your ego have its way" Knowing that would be a bitter move, Have a sense of Heaven about you Cause love is rare in this day As families part, but not pass away, When we learn to be brighter Instead of getting wrapped up in burdens of fire This is what will make our lives inspire, We must come to terms That we need a sense of concern, This will be the message When we learn

Book Traumatic Verses

  • Author : Andrés José Nader
  • Publisher : Camden House
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9781571133755
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Traumatic Verses written by Andrés José Nader and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2007 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Traumatic Verses provides psychoanalytically informed close readings of a range of poems and discusses their significance for aesthetic theory and for research on the camps. It also tells the stories behind the composition and preservation of these poems and the history of their publication since 1945. Most of the poems appear here for the first time in English translation along with the original texts. This book fills a gap left by literary historians, who have mostly ignored writings from the camps and avoided careful scrutiny of literature produced under the Nazi regime. Studies of trauma have concentrated on post-traumatic experiences; discussions of aesthetics after the Holocaust have neglected the issue of the artistic impulse in the camps. On both counts this book constitutes a unique contribution to scholarship, showing that, when read attentively, the poems written in the camps are invaluable sites for confronting the Nazi past." --book jacket.

Book excerpt: I was born July 25, 1979, in Louisville, Kentucky. I was raised by my mother, who worked extremely hard to support me and my other siblings. When I was ten years old we moved to Millington, Tennessee, a town right outside of Memphis. After graduating from high school I attended Jackson State Community College on a basketball scholarship before transferring to Fisk University to further my education. Throughout my years I have always had a passion for poetry. I began writing at eight and ever since then I never put the pen down. I compare my style to hip hop, which is a form of poetry over a beat. I am a big fan and I love any form of expression, whether its writing, rapping, singing, or painting. I titled my works Ghetto Poetry because its from a perspective of a person who has lived on both sides of the fence. I can relate to the people who are still in the struggle and at the same time get the message to corporate America so that they can feel whats going on. I get inspiration from all sorts of things, mainly friends and family, so I hope my works are an inspiration to others so that they may grow close to their loved ones.
