Book excerpt: ghet-to n. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) Italian, from Venetian dialect ghèto island where Jews were forced to live; literally, foundry (located on the island), from ghetàr, to cast; from Latin jactare to throw 1: a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to live 2: a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure 3a: an isolated group a geriatric ighetto/i” bb: ghet-to adj. (twenty-first-century everyday parlance) 1a: behavior that makes you want to say “Huh?” b: actions that seem to go against basic home training and common sense 2: used to describe something with inferior status or limited opportunity. Usually used with “so.” That’s so ighetto/i” ; He’s so ighetto/i” brb3: As current and all-consuming as “ghetto” is in these days of gold teeth, weaves (blond and red), Pepsi-filled baby bottles, and babymamas, ghetto has a long history. The original ghetto was in the Jewish quarter of Venice, a Catholic city. Before it became the Jewish quarter, this area contained an iron foundry or ghèto, hence the name. These days, ghetto no longer refers to where you live, but to how you live. It is a mindset, and not limited to a class or a race. Some things are worth repeating: ghetto is not limited to a class or a race. Ghetto is found in the heart of the nation’s inner cities as well as the heart of the nation’s most cherished suburbs; among those too young to understand (we hope) and those old enough to know better; in little white houses, and all the way to the White House; in corporate corridors, Ivy League havens, and, of course, Hollywood. More devastating, ghetto is also packaged in the form of music, TV, books, and movies, and then sold around the world. Bottom line: ghetto is contagious, and no one is immune, no matter how much we like to suck our teeth and shake our heads at what we think is only happening someplace else… From an award-winning journalist and cultural commentator comes a provocative examination of the impact of “ghetto” mores, attitudes, and lifestyles on urban communities and American culture in general. Infused with humor and entertaining asides—including lists of events and people that the author nominates for the Ghetto Hall of Fame, and a short section written entirely in ghetto slang—Ghettonation is a timely and engrossing report on a controversial social phenomenon. Like Bill Cosby’s infamous, much-discussed comments about the problems within the Black community today, it is sure to trigger widespread interest and heated debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all come into this world full of promise and possibility. For some, when born into a healthy and highly functional family, the journey is quite easy, with guideposts and directions given freely. However, that is a very small population of people. Most of us were born into families that were in their own way struggling for independence, accomplishment, safety or security. For the millions of people who grew up in painful families, whether by absent parents, abusive parents, or those who were ill-equipped, noted therapist Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse shows that they do not have to follow a family tradition of compulsion or addiction. In the revised edition of the classic Learning to Love Yourself, Wegscheider-Cruse explains that it is possible to create our own self-worth at any time in our lives, even as adults. She guides readers on a journey to greater self-worth, explaining how to eliminate toxic self-defeating messages, how to choose healthier, new perspectives, and how to reinvent yourself each day open to a world of possibilities.

Book Revelations of a Hood Chick

Download or read book Revelations of a Hood Chick written by Kijana LeTasha Harris and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry is an expression of ones perception of their lifes experiences. Sometimes in life we have battles within ourselves. When we are growing and maturing, it can sometimes be painful. But growing pains are normal. We as young children experience the aches in our bones and muscles as we grow. Well, as adults, we experience that same kind of pain, but its in our hearts and minds. The big picture is to embrace our pains because theyre temporary. Once we have reached our maturity, we have an unfiltered wisdom. That is something only experience can bring. The harder we struggle, the stronger we have a chance to become. The choice is our own. In my life, I have struggled with love. Its easy for me to give yet hard to receive. Therefore, I have set out to conquer my inner self. I have started my journey by loving me and letting me love me back. I express my thoughts that are nontraditional because Im not traditional. I have always been considered different or an outcast, but I learned I am supposed to be. These poems are a reflection of who only God can see, and I am ready to reveal myself.

Book excerpt: Move into the Present Room and Enjoy Your Life “The Three Rooms is a heartfelt seminal text which addresses self-understanding in spatial and temporal terms, simple enough for a child to understand, yet deep enough to awaken a true spiritual seeker.” —Dr. Michael R. Cunningham, Chancellor, National University System Most of us are sleepwalking, focusing on the physical world when we should be paying attention to our inner selves, and to being in the present. The Three Rooms will help readers awaken and align with their Higher Self. The book uses the metaphor of rooms to represent places our thoughts go: backwards to the Past Room, forward to the Future Room, or now in the Present Room. In the Present Room, there are no regrets of the past or fears of the future; it is the ideal state “where we can find joy, peace, acceptance, and compassion,” among other positive emotions. That is where we are meant to be.

Book How to Hustle and Win

    Book Details:

  • Release : 2008-06-19
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book How to Hustle and Win written by Supreme Understanding and published by Supreme Design Publishing. This book was released on 2008-06-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Likened to a 48 Laws of Power for young Black men, this book presents Black biographies, history, and current events in a language that the Hip-Hop generation will understand and relate to. Each story or essay is framed within the context of a life lesson, each one being of vital importance to the survival, redemption, and ultimate success of our dying Black generation. Both the positive and negative sides of the Black experience are explored in detail, from the lives of infamous drug dealers and pimps to the exploits of Black revolutionaries and activists. In addition, several How To sections outline simple strategies for self-development. Packed with useful information, from the best way to handle confrontations with police, to the continuing relevance of the 1919 race riots, this book has been compared to an urban Encyclopedia Africana. Others have called it a Blueprint for Black Power for a generation struggling with materialism and short attention spans. This book is guaranteed to change the world by changing the way millions of people think and live. In How to Hustle and Win, author Supreme Understanding tells, in often graphic detail, stories like that of the infamous Philadelphia Black Mafia, Harlem's heroin kingpin Frank Lucas, and former gang leader Stanley "Tookie" Williams. In between and throughout these tales, he weaves life lessons and guidance, turning sordid stories of crime and urban despair into an educational experience. Whereas Robert Greene's bestselling 48 Laws of Power used iconic figures from classical history to illustrate the guidelines for personal success, How to Hustle and Win is filled with the exploits of rappers, gangsters, radicals, and revolutionaries. This is a new kind of Black history book, and its intent is the motivation and achievement of a new kind of reader. Although today's literary market has seen an influx of self-help books attending to a variety of issues, few books have attempted to address the concerns of young Black men, struggling to find direction. It is this group that author Supreme Understanding names as one of most troubled demographics in American society today. On the book's website, the author comments: "Unfortunately, few authors actively target this audience, and those who do are either not speaking their language, or not interested in pushing for change. This is why How to Hustle and Win was written. This book will change the minds of millions of young men of color, and by doing this, it will ultimately change the world." Revolutionary aspirations aside, How to Hustle and Win's groundbreaking concept results in a truly appealing work. Its essays are delivered in short bursts, none of them over four pages long, making it ideal for struggling readers and those with shorter attention spans. At the same time, the book is filled with a wealth of information that would enlighten educated readers equally. In fact, the author juxtaposes his own personal tales of early delinquency and misdirection with his later years of professional success, including obtaining a doctorate in education at the age of 26.
