Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Dancer’s Voice Rumya Sree Putcha theorizes how the Indian classical dancer performs the complex dynamics of transnational Indian womanhood. Putcha argues that the public persona of the Indian dancer has come to represent India in the global imagination—a representation that supports caste hierarchies and Hindu ethnonationalism, as well as white supremacist model minority narratives. Generations of Indian women have been encouraged to embody the archetype of the dancer, popularized through film cultures from the 1930s to the present. Through analyses of films, immigration and marriage laws, histories of caste and race, advertising campaigns, and her own family’s heirlooms, photographs, and memories, Putcha reveals how women’s citizenship is based on separating their voices from their bodies. In listening closely to and for the dancer’s voice, she offers a new way to understand the intersections of body, voice, performance, caste, race, gender, and nation.

Book Ramblings of a Simpleton

Download or read book Ramblings of a Simpleton written by S. V. Prabhath and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ramblings of a Simpleton is a collection of narratives that represents author Dr. S.V. Prabhath's attempts to pen down a few of his various experiences, observations, and anecdotes from his journey of life. Some sections deal with workday experiences, others with episodes from the author's personal life, while others are recollections of younger days. While the book has some philosophical reflections, balancing light musings on the commonplace with occasional forays into the darker recesses of the unconscious, it is meant only for light reading. Unlike many books of a similar philosophical bent, Ramblings of a Simpleton is intended to elicit smiles and occasional chuckles as much as an odd moment of reflection or inward contemplation. The narratives in the book are grouped into six sections, forming a melting pot of memoirs that attempt to depict the rainbow of emotions that profile the author's life. The author draws upon his diverse background in various fields of research, teaching, publishing, and world travel to present the reader with a colorful palette of experiences and anecdotes that are amusing and also enlightening.Possessing what he describes as a wholesome academic background, author Dr. S.V. Prabhath is a scholar, a man of letters, and a contributor to various journals and publications. Along the route of his well-travelled life, he has edited numerous books including Gandhi Today and Youth and Rural India. On the front cover is a picture of his father who is in his 90s. The book's title Ramblings of a Simpleton is aptly epitomized by his photograph, which captures him in a contemplative mood on a Sunday evening. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/SVPrabhat

Book Dancing Bodies of Devotion

Download or read book Dancing Bodies of Devotion written by Katherine C. Zubko and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dancing Bodies of Devotion: Fluid Gestures in Bharata Natyam examines how Bharata Natyam, a traditionally Hindu storytelling dance form, moves across religious boundaries through both incorporating choreography on Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, and Jain themes and the pluralistic identities of participants. Dancers traverse religious boundaries by reformulating an aesthetic foundation based on performative rather than solely textual understandings of rasa, conventionally defined as a formula for how to physically craft emotion on stage. Through the ethnographic case studies of this volume, dancers of Bharata Natyam innovatively demonstrate how the rasa of devotion (bhakti rasa), surprisingly absent from classic dance-related texts, serves as the pivotal framework for expanding on their own interreligious thematic and interpretive possibilities. In contemporary Bharata Natyam, bhakti rasa is not just about enhancing religious experience; instead, these dancers choreographically adapt various religious identities and ideas in order to emphasize pluralistic cultural and ethical dimensions in their work. Through the dancing body, multiple religious and secular interpretations fluidly co-exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have cinema and popular religion shaped each other? Is the display of devotion in a cinema hall the same as devotion in a temple? How do we understand cinema’s compelling power to mesmerize people? Unlike Hindi cinema, mythological and devotional films remained popular genres in Telugu (and Tamil too) until quite recently. The political success of film star N.T. Rama Rao, well-known for his portrayal of gods and kings, posed afresh the problem of cinema’s power to enthral. To what extent viewers were persuaded of his divinity became a matter of debate. In later decades, the figure of another kind of viewer haunted the discourses around cinema, that of the female viewer who got possessed during screenings of goddess films. Using questions around viewership as the focal point, this book studies the intersections between popular cinema, religion, and politics in South India. The first full-length study of Telugu mythological and devotional films, it combines an account of the history and politics of these genres with an anthropology of film-making and viewership practices. It argues that cinema and other audio-visual technologies lead to the re-orientation of sensibilities and the cultivation of new sensory modes.

Book Tree and Serpent Early Buddhist Art in India

Download or read book Tree and Serpent Early Buddhist Art in India written by John Guy and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering study of the emergence of Buddhist art in southern India, featuring vibrant photography of rare works, many published here for the first time Named for two primary motifs in Buddhist art, the sacred bodhi tree and the protective snake, Tree & Serpent: Early Buddhist Art in India is the first publication to foreground devotional works produced in the Deccan from 200 BCE to 400 CE. Unlike traditional narratives, which focus on northern India (where the Buddha was born, taught, and died), this groundbreaking book presents Buddhist art from monastic sites in the south. Long neglected, this is among the earliest surviving bodies of Buddhist art, and among the most sublimely beautiful. An international team of researchers contributes new scholarship on the sculptural and devotional art associated with Buddhism, and masterpieces from recently excavated Buddhist sites are published here for the first time—including Kanaganahalli and Phanigiri, the most important new discoveries in a generation. With its exploration of Buddhism’s emergence in southern India, as well as of India’s deep commercial and cultural engagement with the Hellenized and Roman worlds, this definitive study expands our understanding of the origins of Buddhist art itself.
