Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper discusses growth strategy for Ghana. Ghana has achieved impressive development gains over the last decades, with rising incomes, lower poverty, and better health, education, and gender outcomes. However, growth has recently become less inclusive, with high inequality and slower poverty reduction. In order to address these challenges, the authorities are pursuing a “Ghana beyond Aid” development strategy centered around agricultural modernization and export-led industrialization. Accelerating productivity growth calls for fostering competition, improving the business environment, strengthening human capital, taking advantage of growing regional markets and industrial policies that prioritize sectors that can export and innovate and where Ghana could achieve economies of scale. Consistent and predictable government policies can help increase long-term investment and improve public spending effectiveness. A key lesson from growth accelerations in other countries is that it is crucial to achieve economies of scale. In most cases, rapid economic growth required achieving export success in specific sectors.

The paper describes historical developments in cocoa production. The effects of the taxation of cocoa in Ghana are evaluated and a dynamic model of cocoa supply is estimated and used for simulations. The paper concludes that the most important factors adversely affecting the cocoa sector were government policies. Specifically, in the late 1960s and the 1970s, the effective cocoa duty rates were punitive and the cocoa sector was further hit by policies of overvalued exchange rate.

Book An Economic History of Ghana

Download or read book An Economic History of Ghana written by Ivor Agyeman-Duah and published by Ayebia Clarke Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is one of the best books reflecting on Ghana's half-a-century of often tumultuous transformation. Ivor Agyeman-Duah has gathered together a group of scholars, educators and government, business and civil society leaders to debate the trajectory of Ghana's economic history. Their views centre on three fundamental themes: structures and institutions in a postcolonial economy, the role of public policy, stimulus and innovation." "A timely volume as Ghana celebrated its 50th Anniversary of Independence in 2007 under President Kufuor's 2-terms of eight-years of relatively peaceful democratic rule. Contributors include: Jeffrey D. Sachs, Anthony Akoto-Osei., Richard Anane, Joyce Aryee, Ellen Bortei-Doku Aryeetey, Ernest Aryeetey, Moses Asaga, Ken Ofori-Atta, Gareth Austin, Annan Arkyin Cato, Mary Chinery-Hesse, T. Oteng-Gyasi, E. Gyimah-Boadi, Dirk-Jan Omtzigt, D.K. Osei, Isaac Osei, Nii Moi Thompson and Charles Wereko-Brobbey, et al." "This is unquestionably one of the best contemporary economic history books about Ghana drawing on the expertise and knowledge of Ghanaians as well as international experts and leading lights to reflect on 50 years of Ghana's economic challenges and achievements." "Contributors include leading economists such as Jeffrey D. Sachs, Earth Institute, Columbia University and Advisor to the UN Secretary General; eminent Ghanaian scholars such as Professor Ernest Aryeetey of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana; and Mary Chinery-Hesse, Chief Advisor to the President of Ghana. The contributors focus on three aspects: Structures and Institutions in a Postcolonial Economy: A Vampire Economy with a Silver Lining and Crossing the Jordon: Stimulation and Innovation with a Foreword by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka." "This volume will be a valuable tool for studies on African Economic History with specific emphasis on Ghana but could also double as a yardstick for comparing the economic histories of other well performing African economies such as Botswana, Mauritius, Cape Verde, Namibia and South Africa - according to the World Bank annual good governance rankings released in 2006."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Enterprising Women

Download or read book Enterprising Women written by Mary Hallward-Driemeier and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together new household and enterprise data from 41 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to inform policy makers and practitioners on ways to expand women entrepreneurs’ economic opportunities. Sub-Saharan Africa boasts the highest share of women entrepreneurs, but they are disproportionately concentrated among the self-employed rather than employers. Relative to men, women are pursuing lower opportunity activities, with their enterprises more likely to be smaller, informal, and in low value-added lines of business. The challenge in expanding opportunities is not helping more women become entrepreneurs but enabling them to shift to higher return activities. A central question addressed in the book is what explains the gender sorting in the types of enterprises that women and men run? The analysis shows that many Sub-Saharan countries present a challenging environment for women. Four key areas of the agenda for expanding women’s economic opportunities in Africa are analyzed: strengthening women’s property rights and their ability to control assets; improving women’s access to finance; building human capital in business skills and networks; and strengthening women’s voices in business environment reform. These areas are important both because they have wide gender gaps and because they help explain gender differences in entrepreneurial activities. It is particularly striking that while gender gaps in education tend to close with higher incomes, gaps in women’s property rights and in women’s participation in reform processes do not. As simply raising a country’s income is unlikely to be sufficient to give women equal ability to control assets or have greater voice, more proactive steps will be needed. Practical guidelines to move the agenda forward are discussed for each of these key areas.
