Download or read book Geysers and Geothermal Energy written by John S. Rinehart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geysers. What makes them work? Many who have seen a geyser in action know only that it spouts hot water into the air. Many others have never seen one. Chapter 1, Geysers of the World, delineates their distinguishing features, locates the geyser regions of the world, and places investigations by world travelers and scientists in historic perspective. One of the quickest ways to become acquainted with a geyser is to observe it. The descriptions of several well known geysers, some based on past observations by others, but frequently by me, do not neces sarily portray current behavior. They do, however, represent general features. Geysers exist as a result of a delicate and unique interplay among the heat, the water, and the rocks of the earth. In essence, heat and water must be available, transported, distributed, stored, and finally released. Chapter 2, The Geologic, Thermal, and Hydrologic State of the Earth, especially that close to its surface, sets the stage for Chapter 3, Fundamentals of Geyser Operation. The geyser is treated here as a simple system consisting of three major interacting elements: a source of water, a source of heat, and a reservoir for storing water. The discus sion centers around the actions occurring within idealized columnar and pool geysers, and more complex systems. Some of the more workable geyser theories are evaluated.

Book Geothermal Energy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Lachner
  • Publisher : Britannica Educational Publishing
  • Release : 2018-12-15
  • ISBN : 1508106177
  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Geothermal Energy written by Elizabeth Lachner and published by Britannica Educational Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people associate geothermal energy with watching dramatic geyser eruptions or relaxing in a steaming natural hot spring. However, heat from within the Earth can also be used to generate electricity and heat buildings. Readers learn about the past, present, and future of geothermal power through this informative book. Topics covered include how geothermal heat is created and brought up to Earth's surface, the surface features, such as lava flows, hot springs, geysers, and fumaroles, that are signs of it, and how geothermal heat pumps and geothermal power plants work. The need for renewable energy sources such as geothermal energy is addressed, as is the need to manage geothermal resources sustainably.

Book Geysers and Hot Springs

Download or read book Geysers and Hot Springs written by Therese Shea and published by Encyclopaedia Britannica. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water that lurks beneath the Earth's surface is usually far easier to ignore than the water that covers it, until that water bursts forth above ground as geysers and hot springs. This engaging volume explains to young readers where this water comes from and its relationship to volcanic activity underground. They will also learn where on Earth these spectacular eruptions are found, how geothermal energy can be harnessed for our use, and much more. Striking images of Old Faithful and other geysers fill the pages of this informative volume, while additional geological principles are imparted through boxed questions and terms.
