Book Pursuit of Division

Download or read book Pursuit of Division written by Martin Loney and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1998-06-16 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loney takes issue with popular attitudes toward race and gender, whereby to be born a woman or a member of a visible minority is to enter life at a disadvantage and therefore be entitled to compensatory provision. Arguing that social class not group membership determines life chances, he refutes the claims of those who detect systemic prejudice and discrimination and reap considerable public subsidy in return. From the release of the Abella report to the present, Loney sets the growth of federal involvement in preferential hiring in the context of a growing industry whose success depends on the constant affirmation of group grievance based on gender or race. He argues that preferential hiring policies and a muddled multiculturalism leads to the continual assertion of the primacy of race even as the government officially opposes racial thinking. Loney discusses many up-to-date and high profile examples, including Bob Rae's preoccupation with skin and gender politics, Brian Mulroney's attempts to strengthen the Conservative Party's ethnic constituency by funding ethnic groups and maintaining high levels of immigration, and former defence minister David Colinette's extensive use of public funds to court ethnic voters in his Toronto constituency. The Pursuit of Division will be essential reading for anyone concerned about where government-mandated policies on equity and multiculturalism may be taking us and about the implications of emphasizing the politics of difference over that of shared community.

Download or read book Employment Equity in Canada written by Carol Agócs and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s, the Abella Commission on Equality in Employment and the federal Employment Equity Act made Canada a policy leader in addressing systemic discrimination in the workplace. More than twenty-five years later, Employment Equity in Canada assembles a distinguished group of experts to examine the state of employment equity in Canada today. Examining the evidence of nearly thirty years, the contributors – both scholars and practitioners of employment policy – evaluate the history and influence of the Abella Report, the impact of Canada's employment equity legislation on equality in the workplace, and the future of substantive equality in an environment where the Canadian government is increasingly hostile to intervention in the workplace. They compare Canada's legal and policy choices to those of the United States and to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and examine ways in which the concept of employment equity might be expanded to embrace other vulnerable communities. Their observations will be essential reading for those seeking to understand the past, present, and future of Canadian employment and equity policy.

Book Disability Rights Monitoring and Social Change

Download or read book Disability Rights Monitoring and Social Change written by Marcia H. Rioux and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2006 United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has provided a significant catalyst and a legal mandate for disability rights monitoring, and discussions on disability rights are breaking new ground across disciplines. Disability, Rights Monitoring, and Social Change is an important and timely collection that explores and challenges the ways in which disability rights are monitored. The contributors to this edited volume range from grassroots activists to international scholars and United Nations advisors. The chapters address the current theoretical, methodological, and practical issues surrounding disability rights monitoring and offer a detailed look at law and policy reforms, best practices, and holistic methods. This unique compilation crosses the divide between the global South and North and explores the complex issues of intersectionality that arise for women with disabilities, Indigenous peoples with disabilities, and people with diverse disabilities. Its participatory methodology-calling for the inclusion of people with disabilities in processes that involve them-and its local and international perspective make this book a critical contribution to the fields of rights monitoring and disability studies. Appropriate for courses on disability, human rights, social justice, policy, and advocacy, this volume serves as a guide and learning tool for anyone interested in disability rights monitoring and, more generally, the effective practice of monitoring human rights.

Book International Employee Equity Plans

Download or read book International Employee Equity Plans written by Mary K. Samsa and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Law Group Series Volume 4 Although the economic downturns of 2001 and 2002 have threatened to dampen enthusiasm for employee equity participation in business enterprises, such plans continue to be offered by employers in nearly all major national jurisdictions. The time is ripe, in fact, to clarify and elucidate the legal complexities of extending such plans across borders to employees working in other countries. This is the first book to provide in-depth, country-by-country coverage of the national law issues that must be considered by an employer implementing (or considering the implementation of) a multinational employee equity plan. For each of thirty countries, International Employee Equity Plans presents a detailed survey of applicable law, trends, and customs affecting employee participation. Each chapter is written by practicing employment lawyers in that particular jurisdiction, ensuring that the critical issues, potential pitfalls, and likely changes are incisively dealt with. Among the matters described and analysed for each country are the following: the most advantageous (and disadvantageous) types of plans; relevant securities offering rules; all legal compliance steps; available exemptions and reliefs and the conditions upon which they are offered; the fine line between and¿informingand¿ and and¿advisingand¿; taxation of employee benefits and other tax rules; and the extent to which local courts will recognize foreign law in all pertinent matters. The wealth of guidance and information in this book will help many more organisations to follow the lead of those companies that have already achieved remarkable success in this important area of international business. Legal practitioners, in-house counsel, human resources executives and others involved in implementing employee equity plans have here a detailed and user-friendly handbook covering the most important jurisdictions. The World Law Group is a network of independent law firms located in most of the world's major commercial cities. Each World Law Group memebr firm has been selected for its excellent business reputation, its dept of commitment to international practice and its ability to assist other member firms in their national dealings.
